Our guest blogger is Open Left ’s Chris Bowers. In explaining why he voted against climate change legislation in the House, freshman Democratic Representative Eric Massa said Monday that calls to his office against the bill outnumbered calls in favor of the bill by 19-1: My final reason for opposing this bill was you , the constituents of New York’s 29th Congressional District. In the week leading up to the vote, our offices received hundreds of phone calls urging a ‘no’ vote.

By Teryn Norris Originally published by AlterNet July 8, 2009 The recent passage of the American Clean Energy & Security Act (ACES) through the U.S. House of Representatives drew different reactions from climate and environmental advocates. But one key perspective shared by most advocates is that, despite its weaknesses, the bill is a good first step. ACES builds a solid foundation for future progress on U.S. climate mitigation, the argument goes, and climate advocates will be well-positioned to strengthen the legislation in years ahead.

We’ve seen Senator Burr’s response regarding Cap & Trade , but what about Kay Hagan?  North Carolinians need to know where she stands too.  I e-mailed Senator Hagan’s office last week about Cap & Trade, specifically asking for her thoughts and how she was planning to vote.  Yesterday I received a response saying she’s too busy to respond . Surely her office has received a number of inquiries about Cap & Trade, so why couldn’t they regurgitate the same form letter to everyone asking similar questions?  Maybe she doesn’t want to tell us how she will vote, or maybe her silence is all the information we need.

The day’s top political news: Pope Calls for New World Financial Order Pope Benedict XVI called Tuesday for a new world financial order guided by ethics, dignity and the search for the common good in the third encyclical of his pontificate. In ”Charity in Truth,” Benedict denounced the profit-at-all-cost mentality of the globalized economy and lamented that greed had brought about the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

Wow. Well, to look at America’s biggest newspapers, everyone got the memo: today’s theme is President Obama Pushes Cap and Trade on the Senate ( it’s almost as if someone is feeding the MSM storylines or something — weird ). The story is the same in the Washington Post , New York Times , and Wall Street Journal . So, it appears that cap and trade — first drafted by Messrs. Waxman and Markey in the House — is now Senator Harry Reid’s show.

Yet another reason why cap-and-trade is likely to achieve the emissions reductions deeper and faster than people project. U.S. power plant emissions fall as regulation looms U.S. power plant emissions of sulfur dioxide dropped sharply in the first half of the year as the electricity industry prepared for tighter regulation in 2010, Genscape said Monday. Sulfur dioxide emissions were down 24 percent compared to the first half of 2008, much more than would be expected due to the recession and lower electricity demand, the power industry data provider said in its quarterly review of energy trends.

Why is “no” such a bad word? The way I look at it, if someone were to ring my doorbell and ask to come into my home and subsequently steal everything not bolted down, I’d say “no.” If someone were to ask to provide my three-year-old with a $300,000 mortgage loan, saddling her with debt long before she ever had the opportunity to earn a dime, I’d say “no.” If someone were to ask whether or not I’d willingly pay twice as much each month for electricity, I’d say “no.” Yet, if you ask the Democrats currently controlling Capitol Hill, you’d think that “no” contained four letters rather than two.

By Alexander Bolton Posted: 07/06/09 08:07 PM [ET] Half a dozen members of the Senate Democratic Conference pose the biggest threat to President Obamas agenda, giving Senate Republicans a fighting chance to block the administrations major expansions of government. GOP leaders have begun reaching out to these centrists, hoping they will buck their party on Obamas two biggest initiatives: healthcare reform and climate change legislation. Now that Democrats control 60 votes, Republicans must peel off a few members of the majority to stage a filibuster.
