“There is in every true woman’s heart, a spark of heavenly fire, which lies dormant in the broad daylight of prosperity, but which kindles up and beams and blazes in the dark hour of adversity.” -Washington Irving Conversations between Bethalynne and I, regarding “Depression Punk” began about a year and a half ago – though until recently, I never really managed to consider these concept so seriously. Such conversations were typically a source of amusement, just silly banter and rampant conceptualizing – most often fueled by late nights and spoiled grain.

Announcements: None: I’m sulking this week because I’m not in Atlanta for TypeCon . Ok, one announcement: an anonymous comment from someone on last week’s post wanted to correct my error about Durham – “Durham Art Walk is a twice-annual large downtown art tour while Third friday Durham is once a month”. Oh, and a chocolate lecture at the science museum in downtown Raleigh tonight. And Labyrinth at 8pm at the Colony in north Raleigh tonight.

DIY Electricity Projects For Every NeedFor a do-it-yourself type person with even just moderate skill, a project to make homemade energy by harnessing wind or solar power is a perfect project. The easiest of these projects would be a home made turbine to generate electricity from the wind.

The day’s top political news: House bill would make health care a right House Democrat leaders, pledging to meet the president’s goal of health care legislation before their August break, are offering a $1.5 trillion plan that for the first time would make health care a right and a responsibility for all Americans. Left to pick up most of the tab were medical providers, employers and “the wealthy”. In the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid said he wanted floor debate to begin a week from Monday.

The Opinion page in today’s Globe carries a piece by a Stephen C. Meyer, identified as the Director of the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture. Among other things he is pimping his new book. The Discovery Institute, for those of you who have no clue, is the place where fake scientists concoct phony science to push religious creationism. Meyer’s piece is full of delicious ludicrousisms (hey, if they can make up science, The Lion can make up words).

Hi Sherry, My results with the Great Taste No Pain quick start plan in 4 days have been great. I am not having headaches, which I usually have just about every day! I have TMJ and a straight neck (You’re supposed to have a curve.) I also don’t wear my glasses all the time, which I should. So I have many different reasons for the headaches. I think the correct food choices have really helped me in relaxing the muscles, yet not feeling tired. The food was great. The simplicity of the foods,

by Gabe MitchellI have always been one of those folk who likes to make sacrifices in order to be “healthy.” You figure an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.Although I haven’t ever had any major health problems, I believe that diet and exercise play a critical role in helping us maintain our well being and increase our longevity. In truth, I started working out in 6th grade, after my father thought it would be good for us all to get in better shape.

Somehow I doubt it, but I’m not sure. Regardless of whether it’s legal or not, check out Thai Express’ new promotion, ” Feed your Brain Beef Stir Fry with Eggplant and Vegetables on Rice with a 16oz beverage Nasunin found in the eggplant skin is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger that has been shown to protect cellmemBRANES from damage ” Yup, what could be better for you than fried red meat over white rice with a sugared soda chaser? I wish there were something we could put in the drinking water that would protect the general public from consuming junk food in response to ridiculous over-simplifications and extrapolations of basic science research.

RSS or Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary is the latest information management tool that is gradually earning popularity among web users and website owners. With RSS technology, it is possible to get the latest postings from your favorite websites. But clicking on the RSS or XML button in a homepage is not enough to give you the service you need. An RSS feed or code displayed in the pop-up screen if not on the main page is composed of symbols and words that would only make sense to advanced RSS users and computer programmers and software enthusiasts.

I see today that the Washington Post decided to hoist upon the unsuspecting masses the latest in a series of uninformed remarks from a soon to be retired governor of Alaska. Today’s topic is cap and trade and you read an effective throttling of the column here and here . But I don’t really want to talk about the substance of the column as much as I want to consider what the utility is of a page that would print such a thing in its pages.

Last night, I caught a rerun of the first episode of Lifetime’s new series, Drop Dead Diva . Once I got past the show’s silly premise (Deb, a thin, wannabe model dies and her spirit is placed in the fat-chick attorney body of Jane), as well as my embarrassment over the fact that I was watching something on Lifetime , for cryin’ out loud – I found the show rather enjoyable. Besides its thematic content (body image, weight issues), it seems like Drop Dead Diva may turn out to just be some fun, light summer viewing.

Memo to Washington Post and editorial page editor Fred Hiatt: We get it already. You don’t like clean energy. You don’t mind publishing unfact-checked articles again and again. And if somebody wants to publish an op-ed attacking climate legislation focused exclusively on the cost of action while never actually discussing climate change or the cost of inaction, hey, why not? It’s not like there’s a major study by a leading journalist criticizing the entire media for such biased coverage

Just completed a busy day with lots of paperwork, conflicts between offices, a heated telephone conversation with a customer, and whatever you can grab junk food for lunch. There is nothing more than enjoying a quiet afternoon relaxing at home, and is headed in the opposite direction to invest a few hours with a professional organization and reap the benefits of a “power networking” session. Yes, it is true, regardless of the benefits of mixing with people, make contacts and get in the right place at the right time, and it is sometimes the last thing you choose to do.

As you sit here in a world of despair, reading, researching, contemplating, and day-dreaming that you can spend the rest of your life without diabetes; you are hoping that for just one second the answer to your prayers could be found in a single article, in just once sentence, without the confusion of overwhelming information. Have you ever had a mentor or other influential person in your life who helped you along a certain path in school, work, or life in general? View other answers Iva Anderson was probably one of the most influential non-family members in my life when I was a teenager. I called her my grandma away from grandmother. In spite of being wheelchair bound as a result of MS and only a ninth grade education (she was forced to marry at a young age,) she opened my mind and body to a completely foreign and wonderful universe. She worked as a taxi cab dispatch during the day.

It was indeed, as Gateway Pundit suggests , “a sad night for the Spin Zone.” as Bill O’Reilly told viewers on Monday that since 2001 we have witnessed “7 of the hottest years” on record. While what he says may be technically true, his implication of man having anything to do with global warming, or that any trend in warming has been anything other than temporary and part of a natural trend of the earth’s history of cooling and warming, is simply not true.

If you want to feel good, real good, here’s what you should do. 1. Walk Tall. The most significant effort you can make to boost your morale is to let the world see a new, confident You. And the first step towards that is to walk talk and confident, strutting through life as if you know exactly where you’re headed. 2. Empower Yourself. There is no greater feeling of power than that which is endowed by knowledge. Identify the areas you would like to empower yourself and take a go at it.

Too many trial judges allow pseudo-expert cops to testify as expert witnesses on such topics as illegal drug sales and gang activity. Here is a Second Circuit case that at least puts brakes on testimony that masquerades as coming from the expert realm, but instead tries to introduce factual allegations that would not come in without expert testimony and that cannot come into evidence with expert testimony, either. In recent decades, the US has had an ambiguous relationship with science . In the abstract, scientists are considered trusted, valuable members of society, but when it comes to specific areas of science that the public is uncomfortable with (such as evolution), a sizable fraction of the public is willing to believe that the scientific community is engaged in a nefarious plot to deceive them. That strange gap in perception hasn’t gone away, based on results from surveys of scientists and the public performed by the Pew Research Center.
