A meme is any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another. A meme is defined within memetic theory as a unit of cultural information, cultural evolution or diffusion that propagates from one mind to another analogously to the way in which a gene propagates from one organism to another as a unit of genetic information and of biological evolution. Multiple memes may propagate as cooperative groups called memeplexes (meme complexes).
Tips For Effective Email Marketing - articles.webspaceme.com

Over the past few years, research has continued to prove the benefits of e-mail marketing for business: low costs, high conversion rates and detailed tracking are all notable features. But e-mail marketing is becoming much more than just a tool for spammers and e-businesses. Consumers are becoming increasingly savvy on the differences between spam and permission-based emails, and more and more of them are accepting permission-based e-mail marketing as a positive replacement for direct mail.

It’s the biggest meeting ever so far from Earth. Crew members of the international space station greet space shuttle astronauts as they arrive after docking. Shortly before 4 p.m. ET Friday, the seven crew members of the Space Shuttle Endeavour opened a hatch and entered the international space station, where they greeted the six crew members who were already there with hugs. “It’s pretty exciting to have 13 crew members aboard the International Space Station,” said ISS Flight Engineer Koichi Wakata, a Japanese astronaut who is slated to return to Earth aboard the shuttle.

The preface to this second edition printing of “ The 120 Year Diet ” begins by discussing the historical and prevailing attitudes toward retarding the human aging process and extending lifespan. The author, Mr. Walford, uses a colorful description of once having to be interviewed on television directly following an appearance by a celebrity whose assertions regarding the spirit world were all taken at face value.

It’s a high statistic and a grim fact: nearly seventy percent of women have, or will have, to deal with cellulite on their bodies. This leaves many women wondering where cellulite comes from and whether or not anything can be done about it. The good news is that thanks to science, we now have a much better understanding of what cellulite is, and how we can dramatically reduce the appearance of it on our bodies. First things first. Cellulite is a fatty deposit build-up under the skin.

Economics after the crisis - sapkotac.blogspot.com

A very interesting piece about the ideological debate on economics, especially after the current financial crisis. Its a refresher in history of economic thought. —————————————————————————— Although the crisis has exposed bitter divisions among economists, it could still be good for economics. ROBERT LUCAS, one of the greatest macroeconomists of his generation, and his followers are “making ancient and basic analytical errors all over the place”.

As someone who is partial to think about the human soul in preference to thinking about the human body, for whatever particular psychodynamic personality structures I have that might predispose my to prefer the human soul over the body, I thought this morning that it would be enjoyable to compose my a description of my attitudes toward the human body, which those who have a tendency to focus more on the body in preference to the human soul, will probably enjoy reading.

Via the Post-Dispatch , I see Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer is hoping to capitalize on his recent infamy with a request for campaign donations. For his own sake, I hope his campaign was able to target the request to only fellow small-minded persons, because this is the sort of blast email people actually read, and actually costs votes. Like any good Republican victimized by facts and critical analysis, Blaine finds honor in the attention paid to him and his moronic legislation.

Over at Watt’s Up With That (WUWT) I have been commenting on how the NOAA-GISS temperature data set is all bass ackwards. I have been noting that scientifically and statistically the data sets used to claim warming are actually the use of thousands of uncalibrated, unmonitored sensors of different types (and therefore different performance and precision) from ground sensors to overwrite the satellite data which shows no significant warming in 3 decades.

But, China has this large of a bucket of bucks (could we use such a bucket ?), reports the WSJ. We need to consider that it’s being shared mostly with a few (comparatively) there like anywhere. They have fat cats there (just like here) that got that way by influence, merit, or whatever.

In May, Wichita geophysicist Dennis Hedke traveled to Arlington, Virginia to deliver testimony at a public hearing conducted by the Environmental protection Agency, or EPA. Now Hedke has released the document that he delivered to the EPA. You can read it in its entirety at the end of this article. Here are some highlights. Regarding the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, perhaps the main organization contributing to global warming alarmism, Hedke writes this: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), as you know, actually has nothing whatsoever in place that would mimic actual “peer-reviewed” architecture.

In years past, we all used to browse through endless web pages, bookmark the ones we liked and then scroll down a long list trying to locate that “great site we found but cannot remember what it was about”. Sometimes, if we found a site that had a dancing hamster , we would bookmark and e-mail it to friends and relatives. In my district, there is always the one teacher who loves to send out a mass e-mail that is simply a link to a great site that he or she found.

Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live completely, 100% “off of the grid and are completely self sufficient” The house is built utilizing natures natural elements, in the shape of an octagon with 8ft wide arch doors on every wall to catch every angle of wind (typical 4 sided homes have half the chance as one with 8 sides. Does compassion make evolutionary sense? Does happiness, for that matter? Tricycle editor James Shaheen interviews science writer Robert Wright on where natural selection and Buddhism meet—and don’t.http://www.tricycle.com/interview/darwin-and-buddha?page=0%2C0One of Buddhism’s central tenets is the illusory nature of self. How does that square with evolutionary theory? Well, commenting on the metaphysical status of the self is above my pay grade, and I’m not sure that a Darwinian perspective sheds much direct light on it.

As with health care, preventative car maintenance is the best thing you can do for those dependable vehicles that get you where you want to go everyday. With preventative car maintenance you might invest a little here and there, but in the end, you will always save yourself time, money and the aggravation that comes with ‘break-down’ surprises. Listed below are some additional reasons to get serious about preventative car care: Safety is the #1 reason to invest a little of your hard earned dough in preventative car maintenance.

I’ve been reading the rather excellent junk food science blog recently, and I’ve found it really interesting. The author shares some of the big research into obesity and nutrition. What’s really interesting is that many of the guidelines we hear on a regular basis seem to have no scientific credibility. And I don’t mean things that sound outlandish, like diets composed entirely of cranberries and algae smoothies, but really straightforward, everyone-believes this stuff.

While doing research on the history of make-up for an article I am writing for Today’s Vintage magazine, I stumbled upon this hysterical article published in the New York Times circa 1945 about the psychology of bag - what they contain and how you hold it says a lot about you. And if you think we carry a lot of junk today, warranting huge totes, follow the link at the end of the article to check out what was carried in 1945. You’d be surprised! The original copy of this article is from the NFAA archives.

By Debbie Schlussel As you may know, today is the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Apollo 11 mission to land men on the moon. (It’s also the 64th anniversary of the detonation of the first atomic bomb in the new Mexico desert.) It was the first manned landing on the moon and was commanded by Neil Armstrong and also manned by Buzz Aldrin, both of whom rightly continue to be American heroes to this day. They set foot from the Eagle onto the moon on July 20, 1969.

David Livingston/Getty Images   by Linda Holmes When NPR ran a piece a couple of weeks ago in which it was suggested that Twitter “tweets” (sorry, that word still gives me hives) should be punctuated and written in sentences, there was some suggestion from commenters that this was a rather bizarre notion, perhaps suggestive of OCD or “unacceptable prescriptivism.” It got me thinking about the fact that Twitter’s reputation for abbreviated “thx 2 U” messages doesn’t reflect my use of the service at all.

Dish Network recently released new programming packages called Turbo HD. These packages are all hi definition, leaving out all of the SD networks. Is this new satellite TV the right for your family? It all depends on what your looking for from your cable TV company. Some folks want every single channel that is available. They don’t care if 10 of them are shopping channels, or that five of the channels are public access. They just want all of the channels.
10 Steps to a Magazine Query - writearticlestoday.com
07/16/2009
Introduction There are two ways to submit to magazine editors. One is to send the finished article without it being requested. This is referred to as an unsolicited manuscript. Most editors dislike reading lengthy manuscripts, and many magazines specify that they do not accept unsolicited manuscripts which, when received, are consigned to what’s called the ’slush pile’ and seldom get read. Another, more productive way, to submit to magazines is to send a query letter, in which you pitch your idea to the editor before actually writing the article.

The Post-Dispatch just rips Blaine Luetkemeyer to pieces this morning .  As first reported on Fired Up! , Luetkemeyer wants to cut funding for the UN’s Climate Change science panel. But Blaine’s actually been embarrassing himself since the beginning of the cap-and-trade debate, and the Post-Dispatch editorial board has had enough. Last year’s global average temperature was the 10th warmest since 1850 . In fact, eight of the past 10 years, and 13 of the last 14, are among the warmest on record.

Netflix streaming through NXE is probably one of the coolest things of all time. Okay that’s an exaggeration…but only slightly. It’s an awesome feature that has changed the way I watch movies and, with Netflix already established as a household name, one that I think has become a standard amenity for most gamers with a Live subscription. Of course the service is only as good as the movies on it. Fortunately the streaming feature is not just a cheap gimmick but while Netflix has supported it with an ever changing selection of quality content, there is still a whole lot of junk as well.
