Popular Mechanics has published an extremely in-depth look at faulty forensics and junk science, at fault for many wrongful convictions. Mofson testified that seven bite marks found on Kulakowski were “entirely consistent” with dental impressions taken from Brown. It was the only physical evidence tying Brown to the crime. Although a defense expert disputed Mofson’s findings, the jury convicted Brown of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

We had a big weekend on the Brevard County/John Preston front. We we have noted here , here , and here , that there has been mounting pressure on Brevard prosecutor, Norman Wolfinger, to do the simply task of looking through his own files to determine any cases that may have involved John Preston. Wolfinger continually said that he wouldn’t do that, instead arguing that it was up to individual inmates to challenge their convictions that may have been tainted by John Preston and his magic dogs. Meanwhile, Florida Today and the local public defender commenced their own investigations into identifying the universe of John Preston cases.

I get to make some Adobe Captivate videos at work and it is fun! I feel like Steven Spielberg. I sit in my office with my headphones on, murmuring, “Highlight Box goes her to underscore the name of the webpage.” And people look through the doorway and think I’m doing complex technical things. I’ve switched my office chair to a director’s chair and have taken to wearing a beret. The students mock me, but I think they’re just jealous of my genius?! Let it be known that I am not the first among my friends to undertake this type of project.

See the bangs? See the shirt? 500 Days Of Summer (starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel) is a good movie, but some of these indicators of oddity have to go. ( Fox Searchlight Pictures © 2009 ) by Linda Holmes As movies about quirky people multiply (such as 500 Days Of Summer , to name one), there comes a moment when it can no longer go unsaid that certain things have been used so excessively in the portrayal of quirky people that they have utterly ceased to be quirky.

By Gary North July 3, 2009 Global warming is based 100% on junk science. The most vocal promoters are not interested in the details of physical science. They are interested in two things: political control over the general public and the establishment of international socialism. Junk Science vs. Real Science For a detailed, footnoted, 12-page article, written by three scientists, two with Ph.D’s from CalTech, click here . This paper was sent to tens of thousands of natural scientists in the United States.

When Blaine Luetkemeyer came out with his legislation to stop funding for the UN’s Noble Prize-winning panel of climate change scientists, I assumed no one would sign on to his moronic legislation. It’s only been an embarrassment for Blaine — he may have excited a few of his fellow radicals, but they’d support him anyway — and it further undermines any illusion that the man can be a moderate voice in Congress. Alas, I was wrong — a dozen times over.

Last week, HealthPoint reported that legislators and Rendell said they would be hard at work over the weekend on the budget, having talks and compromising all over the place. Today, the Patriot-News reported that their sources said those weekend talks between Rendell, his top staffers and legislative leaders “produced little in the way of tangible agreement.” Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi backed that thought up, saying he saw no reason to believe a solution is around the corner

KR Blog » The Wilderness of Memory “[Chabon asks] a valid question, but I can’t escape the feeling that it reflects a particularly American idealization of childhood. Growing up slowly is a privilege of wealth, and few children throughout human history have enjoyed a childhood without the privations of hunger, war, or grinding poverty.

In what has to be the most high tech example of junk science validation of global warming, Reuters reports a Canadian Scientist looked out of the window of the international space station and commented: “This is probably just a perception, but I just have the feeling that the glaciers are melting, the snow capping the mountains is less than it was 12 years ago when I saw it last time,” Thrisk said. “That saddens me a little bit.” Well that settles it then. Global warming proven.

James Kara Murat asked: Shopping with grocery store coupons is not a haphazard sort of activity for those that use coupons on a regular basis. These people know that a great savings is there for the taking, especially if it is done correctly. Organization is the first rule followed by shopping for only what you will use. Asking for better deals is also important. After all, you’ll never get what you want unless you ask. The internet is but a single tool in this money saving endeavor, but an important one nonetheless.

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Wellington-based poet Mary Cresswell. Mary is currently engaged in a “virtual book tour” to promote her new book Nearest and Dearest (Steele Roberts), an illustrated book of satiric poetry. On a virtual book tour, the author appears for brief interviews on a range of blogs rather than visiting different places—a much more environmentally friendly approach. Mary has already been interviewed by Tim Jones http://timjonesbooks.blogspot.com/ .

Outside In © 2009 Cameron Blazer I know, I know. Enough with the ginkgos. I really think this is my last ginkgo-centric post for a while. I got this photo mobile for Christmas last year, and while I liked the idea in theory, in practice, it just wasn’t working for me–all the photos bunched up on top of each other, and none really stood out–basically a big, jumbled mess. I resorted to using it to tack up in-progress designs and fabric swatches.

We find the words ‘genius’ and ‘hero’ bandied about rather sloppily in mass media. Athletic prowess that impresses the crowd can create a hero while a person who is a successful tunesmith is deemed to be a genius. Many regard comedians who deliver lines written or are gifted with glibness to be brilliant. Such misuse of words tends to devalue true heroism and genius. The academic world is often rather ideologically incestuous in some quarters. Honorary degrees may be conferred with the same abandon as that of the fictional Wizard of Oz.

John Dvorak’s Second Opinion: Is the party over for behemoth Microsoft? – MarketWatch “Try to remember all the crazy directions Microsoft has gone in over the past few years. Note the dizzy remarks by Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, who recently insisted that online advertising would soon account for the majority of Microsoft’s income. This is a software company making these comments.” Personally I think Microsoft is a good and robust company that needs new management or some new ideas and it would be a great company.

I was out of town for a few days and in and out of the LaLaAdoptionLand loop. As a consequence, I was only marginally aware that the Congressional Coalition for Adoption Institute (CCAI) had stuck its industrial sized nose into the Orphan brouhaha until I did a phone interview with David Crary from the Associated Press. Crary had seen my earlier blogs on Orphan and wanted my permission to quote me. He informed me that the CCAI had sent Warner Brothers CEO Barry Meyer a letter aghast over the studio’s insensitivity to orphans, foster children, and adoption in general.

I visited that ludicrous museum and left with the mission of finding out who Charles Templeton was. Anyone who could make them that mad had to be great. I was inspired and heartened to learn that I wasn’t alone in my journey. What was sickening was seeing parents force-feeding this junk pseudo-science to their kids. It is one room after another positing the “couldn’t it have happened this way?” and giving glib answers to complex scientific ideas. I hated giving them twenty bucks.

I recently received a link to the latest Nicotine Nazi handbook. It provides detailed, step by step plan these spineless goobers can use to coerce Big Brother into to imposing their will on business owners.I usually try to be witty and pithy in these columns, working in the clever metaphor or silly pun, but my hatred for these scumbags, the most useless and vile of all the parasites who infest our planet, requires a more direct approach.

It would be good news were it not so bad: India, usually considered a threat to U.S. dominance in science, has turned its back on climate science and instead, citing junk science claims, rejected overtures to reduce pollution that affects climate. India appears to have fallen victim to the hoaxters who claim climate change is no big deal. From the Financial Times : A split between rich and poor nations in the run-up to climate-change talks widened on Thursday.

… it’s now simply a matter of PR: Many of the maverick, self-promoting climate sceptics play this game well, which is one reason they exercise such disproportionate influence over public opinion. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), on the other hand, plays it badly. Rather than let loose its most presentable participants to tell the world how it achieves consensus on an unprecedented scale, it fails even to provide a list of the people involved in the process.

For those of us who grew up during the early post WW II America, today’s iteration of our country not only doesn’t feel right, but we have a sense that we have changed the coin of the realm, all for the worse. We can trace the history of our discomfort. It began, as William Pfaff points out, when our model for America started to deviate from a path we thought would last forever.

Strange glass worms. Structures that look like cities. Pyramids. Boulders where they should not be. People are seeing these and more anomalous structures on Mars. The Opportunity and the Spirit rovers have been sending back pictures of objects that deviate from the norm that have nicknames like the riverbed, the bowtie, the glider, and the rabbit plant. However, skeptics do not believe these sightings prove that there is life on Mars.

It takes an hour of pedalling to charge a phone completely Two Kenyan students are hoping to market a device that allows bicycle riders to charge their mobile phones. Jeremiah Murimi, 24, and Pascal Katana, 22, said they wanted their dynamo-powered “smart charger” to help people without electricity in rural areas. “We both come from villages and we know the problems,” Mr Murimi told the BBC. People have to travel great distances to shops where they are charged $2 a time to power their phone, usually from a car battery or solar panel.

Certain politicians and tin pot dictators have long employed the tried and true method of using crises to keep constituents from “looking behind the curtain”. The most effective method of diverting attention away from how badly things are being run is to find a target menace and make it so terrifying that good sense flies out the window. Uninformed citizens (elites & masses alike) who get their news from TV instead of real sources blindly follow the government piper over the hill.

An appeals court has ruled in NASCAR’s favor, granting its request to keep Jeremy Mayfield off the race track. A federal judge lifted the driver’s suspension July 1, and NASCAR appealed to the appeals court in Richmond, Va. That court issued a stay until the appeal can be heard. U.S. District Court Graham Mullen, who allowed Mayfield to return to competition, still has a request before him to overturn his earlier decision based on NASCAR’s claim that Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine a second time.

There’s growth in this market. And whether you’re an income investor or out solely for capital gains, finding it is the key to prospering. In a tough recession like this one, a healthy, growing business is the best guarantor dividends as well as bond interest will continue to be paid. It’s also the only assurance that bear market capital losses will be recovered. Growth is also the best possible protection against the other arch enemy of income investors: inflation.

Climate science is one big massive tinker-fest: I can understand why a researcher (data technician) might start down this path focusing on the desire for long-running series of temperature data. At some point that person or group should have stopped and asked a few questions of the sort: “What are we doing to the data?” or “What are the alternatives?” or “How do different time periods regarding a lengthily warming or cooling influence the outcomes?” If they did these things it seems they chose a method that gave them a warming bias.
