What follows is part 1 of a 15-part series. The remaining installments will appear on Deep Capture over the next several weeks, after which point the story will be published in its entirety. It is a story about the travails of just one small company, but it describes market machinations that have affected hundreds of other companies, and it contains a larger message for anyone concerned about the “deep capture” of our nation’s media and regulatory bodies.

The effects of EMP on electronic equipment is hardly anything new.  I first became aware of it myself back in the 1970’s when I first started to read science fiction.  (The car won’t start!  The radio won’t work!  The aliens used a nuke in near Earth orbit to disrupt our ability to resist an invasion!) It certainly has been used since then.  The most recent remake of The War of the Worlds (2005) sees the protagonist’s car refusing to start because of an electromagnetic pulse that the aliens pump out when they first arrive.

The following citations come from: “Rebranding Alberta’s Right Wing: Would Wildrose Alliance leadership candidate Danielle Smith represent real change for the party?” by Angela Brunschot (See, July 30, 2009). Some of the policy positions here seem odd for people who are politically right of the International Socialist movement so some corrections and clarifications may appear in due course. WASHINGTON (AFP) – US health sheriffs want to ride the sugary drinks that are helping to make Americans fat out of town, or at least off Americans’ menu of choice, and one way they suggest going about it is by taxing sodapop. “The average American consumes roughly 250 calories more today than they did two or three decades ago, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Thomas Frieden, said at the “Weight of the Nation” conference on obesity held in Washington this week.

By Alex Steffen A sort of generation gap on global issues is emerging around the pace of change. The older generation, especially the older generation of well-heeled white men, today respond to our calls for rapid change by urging “realism” — meaning an expectation of delayed action and minimal commitment. We saw this most recently in the U.S. debate about the Waxman-Markey climate bill , which both takes effect too slowly and demands too little , in comparison to what we know we need to do based on climate science.

Some of you may know I was homeschooled starting in 4th grade and until I graduated. I know a lot of my readers also homeschool. So today for the Back To School post here are some ways to green your homeschooling. One way to green your homeschooling is to buy your curriculum used. Most homeschool groups and co-ops will have book sales often. This is more affordable, greener and you can ask the family that used it what they thought of it. A lot of homeschooling can be done on the computer, which will cut down on paper.

Dear President Obama, I note with dismay your appointment of Dr. John Holdren as Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, and Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Although Dr. Holdren’s experience in academia and administration may be adequate, his publicly expressed views regarding population control disqualify him from holding office. I will set aside objections to Dr.

Freshers pile in to uni with all sorts of feelings.  Hope and excitement, despair and unhappiness, wanting a fresh start, wanting to make a point, wanting to save the world.  For everyone it’ll be slightly different. Most of us have at least a fair amount of enthusiasm and may even be full of joy at the opportunities available and looking forward to finding many other opportunities along the way.  But it doesn’t stay that way for three years.

Hattip to Alberto Hurtado at Southern Appeal .   The myth of the Population Bomb is a cautionary tale of the dangers of politicized junk science.    Paul Ehrlich’s best seller in 1968 helped propel public policy in an anti-natalist, pro-abortion and pro-contraceptive direction.  As I hope all of our readers know, the book was a heap of rubbish, making wild alarmist predictions about the dangers of population growth, none of which came true.  Good articles on Erhlich’s bomb of a book are here

There are many reasons why some fail at losing weight effectively and staying in shape. Unfortunately, some of those reasons still today are misunderstood. Belly fat loss does not just happen instantly, but with beneficial nutrition it will happen. But failure to lose weight is not your fault. Science indicates that the major forms of dieting may allow you to lose weight for a short period of time, but that you are then likely to regain the weight and more…leading to a new diet, a new attempt at losing those hard to lose pounds.

By Kat | July 30, 2009 When you take a photo, something kind of strange happens. Whatever you focus on through the viewfinder of your camera is what ends up developing. Except it’s not really that strange, is it? In fact, it’s exactly what you’d expect. And you’d be pretty surprised (not to mention annoyed) if your flicks came back with completely unwanted images. So why are you surprised when life serves up the same old junk? I’d say it’s time to stop being such a grouch and pay attention to what you focus on.

CNS : White House Science Adviser Advocated ‘De-Development’ of the United States By Christopher Neefus President Obama’s top science adviser, John P. Ehrlch and Anne H. Ehrlich.

Study: Tanning beds and UV radiation as deadly as arsenic, mustard gas, experts say – Los Angeles Times LONDON (AP) — International cancer experts have moved tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation into the top cancer risk category, deeming them as deadly as arsenic and mustard gas. For years, scientists have described tanning beds and ultraviolet radiation as “probable carcinogens.” A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75 percent when people start using tanning beds before age 30.

The myths behind forensic sciencefloridainnocence.org

Popular Mechanics has published an article in their August 2009 issue on faulty forensics and its role in wrongful convictions. On television and in the movies, forensic examiners unravel difficult cases with a combination of scientific acumen, cutting-edge technology and dogged persistence. The gee-whiz wonder of it all has spawned its own media-age legal phenomenon known as the “CSI effect.” Jurors routinely afford confident scientific experts an almost mythic infallibility because they evoke the bold characters from crime dramas.

The first time it was to appear, we got bumped at the last minute when SC Guv Mark Sanford decided, unbeknown to his staff or family, to take a weeklong hiking trip on the Appalachian Trail (code for secretly flying to another continent to rendezvous with his Argentinian mistress).  We understood that this was big political news, as far as sex scandals go.

Earlier I proposed that evolution is driven by a “Mutation Algorithm.” I said the Mutation Algorithm is the highest software layer in DNA and it explores evolutionary pathways by testing new features (fur, skin patterns, claws, limbs, wings) like switching out blades on a Swiss Army Knife. I explained why Junk DNA is one of the most backwards theories in the history of modern science. I said that the “random mutation” theory of evolution is an anti-scientific proposal which fails to presume underlying order and teaches us nothing.

I must admit that I don’t usually write articles with such a chilling headline, so I feel that I should give a little background on a relatively innocent experience which prompted me to write this piece. I would also say quite candidly that there is nothing really new in the main context of it, in fact most probably everyone is concious of these facts in some way or another. What I really do wonder though, is just exactly how many of us are actually making any real attempt to seriously look after ourselves, healthwise that is.

Over the past week, a couple of blogs have brought attention to documentaries about wrongful convictions. “Juan Melendez – 6446″ is a film about a man who spent 17 years, 8 months and 1 day (6,446 days) on death row for a Florida murder that he didn’t commit. It was discovered that several crucial pieces of evidence that would have proved his innocence, including a taped confession to the murder from another man, were excluded at trial. In 2002, he was the 99th death row inmate to be exonerated in the U.S.
