The past few days I’ve been thinking a lot about greed. How does it originate? Why are people greedy? What drives a man to greed? I ended up writing this journal entry, and it’s pretty… well…crazy, for lack of a better word. This is a full scale reflection on greed, and its causes. I talk about a lot of things people won’t even want to believe, but I didn’t step around certain issues just because they’re almost unbelievable.

As soon as we do, we will post it.

When I was on my road trip, I stopped and met up with Sarah, a friend from Livejournal and this blog, and met her family and went out to dinner and to a bookstore and then, you know, talked about books, because that’s what book geeks do. While I was there, I gave her some of my book doubles and my copy of that Buffy & Philosophy book, and she put Marked in my hands. She was pretty mysterious about its contents. “I want to know what you think,” she said.

Completely true. Chavez hates intelligent people and people with money different from him, he, his friends and his family which have steal a lot of our Venezuelan money. Insteresting in this article: The government is seizing privately owned companies and farms. Labor unions have been crushed. Political opponents are routinely harassed or else prosecuted by chavista controlled courts. But in the 1970s and 1980s, Venezuelans were the envy of Latin America.

Dear President Obama, I note with dismay your appointment of Dr. John Holdren as Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, and Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Although Dr. Holdren’s experience in academia and administration may be adequate, his publicly expressed views regarding population control disqualify him from holding office. I will set aside objections to Dr.

Friends, fun, fireworks, and lots of food! My husband and I have been invited to a friend’s house out in the country for the Independence Day weekend, and I’m hoping all the above mentioned will be involved. I was asked to bring a dessert, and I accepted with some mild trepidation. As a die-hard sugar addict, desserts have always been my specialty and something in which I had always taken pride… at least until I learned the nasty things sugar does to me and decided I no longer wanted to be addicted it! The addictive side one this time, though, and I began searching my files for ooey-gooey dessert recipes.

The most apparent method to stop food cravings is to stop eating too much. I have heard and used this line a number of times before, while watching some of my friends eat, at home, at parties. Let me spend a few minutes sharing about how to stop sugar cravings naturally . It is not eating too much that causes food cravings or gaining of weight instead it is the selection of food you indulge in. Cravings for food are increased when eating some certain kinds of foods i.e.

I picked ” Antifeatures ” from a crowded slate of good-looking sessions strictly because one of the speaker’s blogs, Revealing Errors 1 , which aims to teach basic computer science through images of basic computer science failing spectacularly , is awesome, and feels like a close cousin to What Can You Do With This? . Benjamin Mako Hill didn’t waste time getting to his premise: our usual cost-benefit analysis w/r/t free and open source software is flawed. We often evaluate software on the basis of cost per feature.

The Trust for America’s Health recently ranked Connecticut 48th lowest in America in obesity. The report naturally touched off hand-wringing by the chattering classes and food police over rising obesity rates killing statistical people and bankrupting Medicare. You know, Medicare, with its almost $90 trillion in unfunded liabilities. As you might expect, the report stuck to the script, right down to blaming income inequality for high obesity rates among low-income people who are forced to dine on junk food when they should be eating produce.

The Grape Diet is ideal for detoxing the body and losing weight at the same time. When we feel tired and sluggish, miserable and stressed, it’s usually because we’re overweight, or our body is clogged up with eating junk and fatty foods. You can detox and lose weight by exercising proper diet control. Usually that means having a starvation or disgusting diet plan, but the grape diet is one of the few exceptions to the rule, providing you like grapes of course.

Dave knows about health! He was totally wiped-out as a teen, then went through a decade without giving up, to find his way back. What I love most about Dave, besides his heart-felt conviction and dedication to helping others, is his generous networking spirit. He was one of the first to publish my writing in his magazine, VIBRANCE, the world’s most-read raw food lifestyle magazine. He loves to share everything he knows, including introducing people so the community feels more connected.

Ottawa Valley Daily Observer * They deliberately omit the destructive consequences of wind turbine construction sites, needed service roads and power corridors, especially in wooded environments. * They deliberately omit the permanent destruction of aquatic habitats and fish migration routes, besides obstructing navigation, at sites where “in-stream” electric generators are installed. * They neglect to report that wonderland Germany’s +13,400 wind turbines (2007 data) have not resulted in the shut-down of one single coal-fired power station.

Junk science hit pieces intended for mass audiences follow the same format. The producers cherry pick analyses and research that supports the conclusion they wish to convey. They ignore research and analyses that contradict their desired conclusion. The infantile agenda is pretty horrible, but it can also be grimly amusing. Sometimes they screw up so badly that they produce a report the body of which contradicts the executive summary of their hit piece.

7/31/09 Reflections Science is wonderful; we owe so much to those who postulate, then research and prove along those lines. Through science we’ve consistently achieved a higher standard of living for everyone, and with new computer technologies the pace of discovery has quickened. What we need to guard against is junk science – postulating and then manipulating technology to agree with the supposition the scientist wants to prove.

Here in flyover country, there is a temptation to a certain schadenfreude about the problems besetting the state of California. Years of hearing about sunshine, scenery, science, beaches, mountains, movie stars and cheap education at terrific public universities can’t help but inspire a little envy. The Hypothesis: Simply put electronic discovery is wrong. It is not 100% accurate, far from it. It’s inherently accurate. It misses out lots of data. The legal system should find other, more accurate methods.__________________________________________________________________________________Out of the ten of thousands of files collected from any one computer only a fraction of those are going to be taken out of the computer for full ED processing.Out of the small percent that do get processed tens, hundreds or possibly thousands will fail due to errors, corroption, encryption, or other problems.

One of these came after the other, can you guess which one? Those who believe in the fallacy of global warming try and blame every weather condition on global warming, that way they are always correct. They tried to blame hurricane Katrina and its aftermath on global warming instead of blaming the idiots who lived below sea level in the first place.

I was trying to hunt down some software for a colleague of mine, so I posted his description of it to several of the profession-related e-mail lists I subscribe to. I ended with I’m on Twitter , I use Ping.fm , I use Twhirl , I have a web site , I have a blog, I subscribe to numerous RSS feeds through a feed aggregator … but I am not sure exactly what it is he wants. Do any of you know? That prompted one listmate to ask I am not on Twitter, I do not use Ping or Twhirl, I do not have a web site (though I do have a blog), and I do not subscribe to numerous RSS feeds.

July 31, 2009 With Health magazine coming forth heralding “Top 10 Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants,” and even Center for Science in the Public Interest giving kudos to KFC for their grilled chicken switcheroos at the drive-throughs, I thought I’d take my trusty Fast Food iphone app out for a ‘working late’ grab-n-go spin, since REAL food spots were already closed. I wheeled in to KFC to see ‘how low you can go’ in caloric content to keep arteries clear and still satisfy a mashed potato craving…And overall was pretty pleased at the options glancing at the mobile cheat sheet.

The National Park Service is currently incinerating 400-year-old old-growth in Olympic National Park. As of today six fires are burning, the largest being the Constance Foofurb Fire at 180 acres. Foofurb is slang for “fire used for resource benefit,” an oxymoron if there ever was one. Foofurbs are Let It Burn fires; letting fires rip through our National Parks is a practice the NPS is in love with. With any luck (the bad kind — Murphy’s Law variety), an uncontained fire in old-growth forests in July will burn for two or three more months.

Caveat emptor is a worthwhile dictum when it comes to organic food, free-range eggs, fair-trade coffee and all the similar appeals to Kelburn and Thorndon angst that people like me and you encounter daily. Is there any way of proving those free-range eggs actually came from hens running about a farmyard rather than hens crowded in a battery cage? Of course not, so it is a leap of faith to pay twice as much for an egg in the belief that the free-range label might actually be true.

It seems our enthusiasm for Obama’s nomination of epidemiologist David Michaels to be the next head of OSHA was noted over at the high profile Science Magazine blog, ScienceInsider by Jocelyn Kaiser. Ms. Kaiser is among an elite group of science reporters and she almost always gets things right. Recognizing the importance of this nomination is certainly getting things right. My only complaint is that after noting that we (and many others) are delighted by the choice, she also notes that Michaels “is not without critics.” That would be fair enough if the “critics” were fair enough.
