TODAY She wakes up slow, opens her dull eyes expecting the new day to glow in, but no. It’s still night. She blinks, yawns into her pillow, stretches beneath the duvet. It’s the pig bedspread, the one her mother made. Her dozy palms bobble over the linen pigs stitched onto the cotton, sleep-weakened fingers catching in the felt swirls of their curly pink tails. She pulls one out gently, lets it tug back into place, and smiles.

Actually, anybody can have The Way, and it is easily passed on. The key, of course, lies in good, old, hard core physics. When karate was brought out of Japan, it was taught in the old way, memorizing strings of random techniques, and eventually bringing this practice to intuition.

Cash for Clunkers may not be as green as it seems, according to NPR’s “How Green Is It?” series. “The estimates vary, but somewhere between 3 and, say, 12 tons of CO2 are produced for every car you make,” says William Chameides, dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Chameides calculates that if you trade in an 18 mpg clunker for a 22 mpg new car (22 miles per gallon is the minimum mileage allowed for a new car under the program), it would take five and a half years of typical driving to offset the new car’s carbon footprint.

The Achievement of Perfect Form by Al CaseIt was Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern Karate, who said: the way, straight and true, who will pass it on? Actually, The Way is now easily understood, and it is easily passed on. The key to the achievement lies in good, old, hard core physics. When karate was given to the world by Japan, it was taught in the old way, memorizing random techniques, and eventually bringing the student to intuition. So it appears that there is a fairly substantial herd of pharyngulites heading for the Creation Science Museum (or whatever it is called–I can’t be bothered to search) this Friday. Among the claims they will see is the old saw that “both sides” are looking at the same evidence; they just look through different lenses, with different assumptions, and come to different conclusions. This is an insult. “Both” sides? As if “evidence”, which science uses, and “faith”, which religion uses, are the only two ways to look at the evidence? How utterly silly.

From today’s Slate’s Today’s Papers: The NYT fronts new court documents that shine a light on the influence of the pharmaceutical industry on medical literature. Wyeth, a pharmaceutical company that sold nearly $2 billion of its hormone drugs in 2001, paid ghostwriters to produce 26 scientific papers that advocated the use of hormone replacement therapy in women. The articles were published in medical journals between 1998 and 2005 and all made a point of emphasizing benefits of taking hormones.

The report is the latest twist in a saga extending back to 2004 when two antiwar groups sued the city after they were denied permission to hold a demonstration on the lawn in advance of the Republican National Convention.

Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) , Benjamin Cardin (D-Md.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), and Jim Webb (D-Va.), all joined forces to secure $2,000,000 for the oyster recovery program in the Chesapeake Boy. I’m assuming the  University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science  has something to do with this.  From their page: When Captain John Smith first arrived in the Chesapeake Bay during the early 17th century, he noted such an abundance of oysters that it made it dangerous to navigate his ship.

People primarily acquire knowledge either scientifically or pseudo-scientifically.  Scientific knowledge is exactly what you think it is.. the scientific method you learned in middle school applied to a hypothesis.  Pseudo science is a lot trickier, and it is what’s primarily seen in the news, popularist economic, philosophy, and psychology books.   Pseudoscience is similar to what snake oil salesmen peddled in the past.  They claim that some specific method, idea, or knowledge is gospel truth when there is no evidence suggesting that it is.

Wind power has long been one of the key components of any alternative energy solution.  It’s clean, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and extremely renewable, all extremely important factors to consider when deciding how to replace our rapidly-depleting supply of fossil fuels and move our country towards a green economy. Minnesota could potentially reap many benefits from expanding its wind power production, too, as a recent MN 2020 report showed that such a move would create upwards of 2,000 jobs and add more than $9 billion into Minnesota’s economy.

The role of health in the future of humanity’s destiny will require changes to our ideas about health and health education, and their current role in our civilization. For instance, the substitution of pharmaceuticals for psychological and cultural inquiry has lead to major increases in the demand for quick fix pills that appear to satisfy. However, the side effects of these drugs, not withstanding their cultural overtone, are sometimes more dangerous than the symptoms they advertise to abate—these drugs are and can never cure the cause.

As the Senate considers the fate of the cap-and-trade bill, we should consider what it means for more carbon dioxide to be added to the atmosphere, something the bill intends to prevent.Carbon dioxide is first and foremost a plant food. In fact, plants take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and use the energy from sunlight to combine the CO2 with water to yield glucose, the simplest sugar molecule.

In the 14th post , I explained an easy method for embedding your video in a post on your blog. (Video shooting and editing were covered in RGMP 12 and RGMP 13 .) Colby Cosh examines the furor around James Heilman’s posting of the original Rorschach inkblots to Wikipedia: It is probably no great loss. Critics of Heilman complain that “decades” of research will have to be abandoned if the Rorschach test becomes impossible to use. But most of this research has been shown, in the last 20 years, to be flapdoodle. As soon as the test became popular — so much so that it became a staple of comedy routines about Freudian psychotherapists, along with couches and thick German accents — it had critics who pointed out that there was little or no statistically validated basis for its interpretation.

The most clear way to stop food cravings is to stop eating too much. I have heard this line a different times before and used to say it a lot at high school, at home at work and while with my friends. Allow me to take a few minutes of your time to share about food cravings . Let start by saying that eating a lot does not consequentially lead to cravings for food or gaining some weight instead it is the choice of food you allow yourself to eat.

The above is a slide lifted from “ Growth After the Financial Crisis “, a fantastic lecture from Venezuelan techno-economist Carlota Perez at the Institute for Public Policy Research.  Audio available here .  Surprisingly accessible, with moments of pure clarity, it comes highly recommended … “there is *always* over-investment in infrastructure, and that’s one of the reasons for the bubbles …” Shaking the unpleasant memories of bone dry theories of international political economy ingested then regurgitated as part of my undergrad degree (mostly about tulips ), I have to say that Perez’s approach genuinely excites me.

I. IntroductionYou cant achieve what you cant conceive.-Author unknownThe United States of America may lose its supremacy as a superpower if our children of today cant grasp the technologies of tomorrow. The trend has already been set. High-level engineering jobs are currently being outsourced to other nations, not only because of cheaper costs, but inadequacies of filling them in the states. Lets face it; there are not too many Americans who strive to have a doctrine in Electrical Engineering to do research and development.

Eruesso has just provided another comment in relation to those things: I believe the fork in our inter-blog dialogue road is based firmly in the definition of Sin/Sinner. What I was pointing out was the historical definition of sin to the Jewish people which was based on tradition and scripture that came from God.

It could be argued that email delivery is as much art as it is science. Sure, it should be a scientific process because it’s all handled by machines and protocols. However, perhaps for added security but often for less noble or logical reasons not all mail servers play by the rules, so email delivery can be far from predictable. When your email arrives at your recipient’s server, that machine has four main choices.
