Junk DNA May Contain Weapon Against HIVrichg74.wordpress.com

The Biology journal of the Public Library of Science, in its April 2009 edition, has a fascinating paper that suggests that we humans, within that part of our DNA often referred to as “junk DNA”, may have the necessary instructions to make compounds that prevent the HIV-1 retrovirus from attacking human cells.

By Arun Gupta Every chef is said to have a secret junk food craving. For Thomas Keller , chef-owner of Per Se and The French Laundry, two of the most acclaimed restaurants in the country, it’s Krispy Kreme Donuts and In-N-Out cheeseburgers. For David Bouley , New York’s reigning chef in the ’90s, it’s “high-quality potato chips.” “Father of American cuisine” James Beard “loved McDonald’s fries,” while Paul Bocuse, an originator of nouvelle cuisine , once declared McDonald’s “are the best French fries I have ever eaten.” Masaharu Morimoto is partial to “Philly cheese steaks,” and Jean-Georges Vongerichten confesses a weakness for Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich.

America’s foremost food evangelist, Michael Pollan, has a new article in the New York Times Magazine , decrying the decline of cooking in America and the outsourcing of our meals to corporations. He dips into history, biology, and even feminist theory as well as some recent social science, and comes up with a complex history of how Americans got to the point we’re at today: eating a whole lot of junk food in between our ridiculous working hours.

This time, it is a tongue in cheek segment on PhD comics called: Nature vs. Science pt. 1 Nature vs. Science pt. 2 Nature vs. Science pt. 3 Nature vs. Science vs. Open Access I remember a year back, at ACS New Orleans, sitting in a chem. ed.

Many women dream of having bigger breasts.  Some say, it attracts men. Others believe it would make their husband happier. Whatever reason women come up with, it is only natural that they want to be well-endowed. Normally, a well rounded figure makes women feel more comfortable, confident and desirable. If you are into this, you probably know already that there are many available options ranging from taking pills or supplements, applying breast creams, going through implant surgery, etc.

There are countless ads out there touting the perfect weight-loss system. But do you really need a complete system to help you drop a few pounds? The answer, of course, depends on many factors. 1. How much weight do you want to lose? If you only want to lose weight so your clothes will fit a little better, then you don’t really need such a convoluted system. Simply cut back on the snacks and the junk food. Add a few more minutes of exercise each day. You’ll look and feel better in no time.

A very good example of how the Global Warming Crowd is trying to “hijack” scientific organisations for there own end. Noteworthy is the usual derision and hostility towards criticism from scientists. And the claim that there is nothing to discuss and that everything is settled. An attitude that has nothing to do with what science is about and the methods used in pursuit of the scientific fact. “Baum’s remarks are particularly disquieting because of his hostility toward skepticism, which is part of every scientist’s soul.” “Your editorial was a disgrace.

Dear Richard, While I am fairly open about my atheism around my friends and my apparently deist father, much of the older generation is devoutly Catholic. My grandparents know that I do not need church to be a good person, and have left the issue alone, but my great-aunt pressures me to come back to the church every time she sees me. I am probably the most vocally philosophical in my family, and my grandmother and I share a fascination with science and history, so there is never a lack of interesting discussion when I visit, but it has gotten to the point with my aunt… that I feel uncomfortable around her.

Whilst it was announced by the conference itself a week or two back and it appeared via @vagueware , I realised today I’d not mentioned it here: I’m speaking at ThinkVisibility on the 12th September. It’s the first scheduled talk I’ve done in a long while – perhaps the first I’ve done since I started attending/organising BarCamp conferences – so it’s a bit weird actually planning it all this far in advance.

Rarely do we get to see a “poor hardest hit” headline that is closer to the mark than it is in this instance. The Senate OK’d another $2 billion for “Cash for Clunkers,” as expected. But, Senator Coburn had proposed an amendment that would have donated “clunkers” that were turned in to the poor and needy families instead of scrapping them, as is being done now . The Democrat-controlled Senate — champions of the poor all — voted down the amendment 56-41.
The Science of Snackingjauntyquills.com

Recently I read an article in my favorite newsletter, Nutrition Action, about a scientist trying to figure out the whys and how of eating. What it boils down to (in my very un-scientific lingo) is that our bodies have very specific chemical reactions to the foods we eat. No big surprise there. Anyone who took ninth grade biology probably remembers that. But the article made two really interesting points. 1) Snacking releases dopamine, which increases our ability to concentrate . Huh.

This is one of the most important posts I have written on health so I want you to carefully read this. My site has been around for over 10 years and from day one I have been extolling the importance of insulin in nearly all chronic degenerative diseases. Well now we have a landmark sbbbbtudy confirming that insulin is the central part of the weight-loss equation. There are over 200 million Americans who are overweight, and collectively they are carrying around an extra 5 BILLION pounds of excess fat.

So before I tell this story, I must first detail for you Mr. E’s love of the useless junk being sold at your average every day American garage sale. Now, don’t get me wrong.  I am a big big fan of garage sales.  Just last weekend I scored a garage sale table, a huge box of thread, a counter sized piece of butcher block and a mortar and pestle, all for the bargain price of ten dollars.  But I think you can agree that all of these items are eminently useful.  And Mr. E looked askance at all of them.

“Human DNA, the Ultimate Spot for Secret Messages” by Dennis Overbye “In Douglas Adams’s science fiction classic, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” there is a character by the name of Slartibartfast, who designed the fjords of Norway and left his signature in a glacier. I was reminded of Slartibartfast recently as I was trying to grasp the implications of the feat of a team of Japanese geneticists who announced that they had taught relativity to a bacterium, sort of.

My opinion of diets is not very good. I think they suck. 99.9% of them. If someone is trying to lose weight the last thing I recommend is for somebody to go on a diet. Why? You see most diets do nothing but cause you to lose weight. It’s a serious problem. I know your asking yourself ‘…but don’t I want to lose weight?’ Yes and no. I’ve probably confused you by now. You see, you don’t want to lose weight, you want to lose fat! When you lose weight you are in an all out quest to make the scale move down.

Has your CamelBak lost its not so fresh taste? Or worse, did you pull it out of winter storage, only to find the remains of a science experiment long forgotten? Thankfully there is a pretty easy way to restore your drink system’s freshness. Cleaning a CamelBak Most drink systems never taste pristine, but it’s very disheartening to get up in the mountains and have nothing to drink but throat burning brackish water when you’re terribly thirsty.

Will politicians’ foolish reliance on faulty “global warming” models will cost you and your children a staggering fortune? This article is the appendix of a paper by William Gray , emeritus professor of atmospheric science at Colorado State University, on the paper titled: On The Hijacking of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) (Scientific Discussion) ABSTRACT I am presently preparing a lengthy research paper to back up my low estimates of the potential for human-induced global warming resulting from a doubling of CO 2 .

What a summer! School let out and we drove to Salina, Ks. I spent two weeks with two children in a little hotel room. That’s where I last left you, my loyal readers. Joel was working with the Kansas National Guard. The kids and I tore a map out of the local magazine and started visiting all of the parks we could find. We walked to Hobby Lobby and bought Jeremiah a Snaptricity science kit. Sarah used markers and copy paper to design elaborate costumes for her stuffed animal.

Jamais Cascio appears over at Fast Company once again, this time talking about the desktop manufacturing revolution , which seemingly becomes a less science fictional prospect by the week . The shift in plausibility is noticeable in the concerns raised: consider a still-distant technology like nanoassemblers or sentient AI, and you’ll get the species-killer existential risks – grey goo, say, or a hard unfriendly singularity.

As we age there are many things that tend to pop up. Some of these include pain, high cholesterol, fatigue , and much more. This is due to the fact that that younger people and people in their prime do not watch what they eat or make the best decisions when it comes to their health. We don’t seem to have time to exercise and eat properly. Let MonaVie Help You Everyone should begin gaining more of an awareness of what their daily actions may do to their body.
Two Great Videos on Climate Changewildwildweather.com

I have updated the Wild Wild Climate Page with two excellent videos on Climate change. They were produced by a retired science journalist with a background in Geology. They are frankly the best I have seen. I spend two years writing this and he covers it better in 20 minutes. Well, I am from Oklahoma, and you can tell where he is from by watching the videos. A fabulous resource for teachers (and a safe one on an internet full of silly junk on climate science), and a good summary of how science works.

(NaturalNews) Nearly every year, as part of the suicide prevention drug pushing racket, drug company shills publish a bogus study with claims that more people are dying from suicide due to a black box warning of an increased risk of suicide in young people on the labels of SSRI and SNRI antidepressants. Although the FDA did announce that the black box warnings, for children under 18, would be added to antidepressants in October 2004, the warnings were not on the labels until the spring of 2005.
