Timothy Carney details the reasons why opponents of ObamaCare should still be wary of the insurance industry: Dear conservatives: Health insurance companies are not your friends. Keep opposing a new government-run insurer, a single-payer plan, and new regulations on the HMOs. But grant that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is correct on this: Insurance companies are villains. Insurance companies lobby for big-government regulations, subsidies, mandates, and tax-code distortions that funnel them money, keep out competition, and stultify innovation.

Obamacare will lead to rationing and those most likely on to be hit will be the elderly : Elderly Americans are turning out in droves to fight ObamaCare, and President Obama is arguing back that they have nothing to worry about. Allow us to referee. While claims about euthanasia and “death panels” are over the top, senior fears have exposed a fundamental truth about what Mr. Obama is proposing: Namely, once health care is nationalized, or mostly nationalized, rationing care is inevitable, and those who have lived the longest will find their care the most restricted.

Earlier this week, it was revealed in the Washington Post that Obama had dispatched some 22+ paid staffers to Indiana to drum up some astroturf support for his government takeover of health care. More on that effort (which is also taking place in other states) comes from the (normally very liberal) Los Angeles Times : It seems that, despite all the media attention lavished on e-mail appeals to his supporters, not everyone pushing for President Obama’s embattled healthcare reform plan these warm August days is an idealistic volunteer in it for the sake of helping move the country forward and gaining medical attention for millions of uninsured Americans.

One of the more recent talking points to surface on President Obama’s plan to nationalize (eventually) the health-insurance industry and ration (eventually) health care holds that because Medicare is such a successful, government-run program, Americans should welcome Obamacare with open arms (and wallets). To senior citizens who have most of their medical bills paid by the government when they actually can find doctors who accept the government’s niggardly reimbursements, and to Americans who want desperately to believe in hope and change, this argument, typically accompanied by a swipe at “greedy insurance companies” for being capitalists, is appealing.

While the nation’s focus is still on the Democrats’ efforts to foist ObamaCare an an increasingly skeptical public, there is bad news on another front for President Obama. Bloomberg is reporting that the national energy tax, better known as cap and trade, could be dead. The U.S. Senate should abandon efforts to pass legislation curbing greenhouse-gas emissions this year and concentrate on a narrower bill to require use of renewable energy, four Democratic lawmakers say.

Writing for The Huffington Post , author Jonathan Weiler parses criticisms of Obama’s health bill, arguing that the nightmarish scenarios that they imagine under government health care are already happening under our current system. Weiler is about to publish a book on party polarization with us: Authoritarianism and Polarization in American Politics . Recently, Digby wrote a post about the pathological tendency of right-wing activists to insist that their rights are being trampled while they themselves push to shut down town hall meetings intended to inform the public about health care.

Charles Kratuhammer’s column expounds on the CBO director’s report that preventive care will raise, not lower, Obamacare’s costs (contrary to claims by Obama and the Democrats): If you prevent somebody from getting a heart attack, aren’t you necessarily saving money? The fallacy here is confusing the individual with society. For the individual, catching something early generally reduces later spending for that condition. But, explains Elmendorf, we don’t know in advance which patients are going to develop costly illnesses.

So says the Associated Press : WASHINGTON – Key senators are excluding a provision on end-of-life care from health overhaul legislation after language in a House bill caused a furor. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said in a statement Thursday that the provision had been dropped from consideration because it could be misinterpreted or implemented incorrectly. A health care bill passed by three House committees allows Medicare to reimburse doctors for voluntary counseling sessions about end-of-life decisions.

Interesting. I’m hearing from more and more doctors and from pharmaceutical sales representatives that the sales reps are rapidly becoming persona non grata in the doctors’ offices. Here’s the thing — PhrMA and the American Medical Association both have thrown doctors under the bus. Doctors are supposed to be represented by the AMA, a majority of doctors oppose Obamacare, but the AMA has decided to support Obamacare. PhrMA , has gone all in with the White House funding an advertising campaign in favor of Obamacare in exchange for favorable terms.

What are they going to do with Dear Sarah? She’s killing them with her honest analysis of their plan to nationalize health care. Last night Rahmbo’s brother “Dr. Death Panel” Ezekiel Emanuel attacked Sarah Palin on her death panel accusations saying the claims were “outrageous.” Later in the day the Senate decided to remove the death panels from Obamacare legislation– the same provision that Emanuel said was not included in the bill.

At least twice in the past week, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen has justified her support for President Obama’s health care reform initiative by pointing out that only two major health insurers do business in New Hampshire. She ought to know. She’s the one responsible for that. In 1994, legislators passed Senate Bill 711, sponsored by state Sen. Jeanne Shaheen. The bill introduced what is called “community rating” to the state’s health insurance market.

Scott Johnson at Powerline ( Amputate This – Part 2 ) on Obama’s touting the CBO-debunked argument of the superior virtues of preventive care over treatment as a cost-saving measure: The more salient question is whether there is anything that can be done to prevent Obama from invoking prevention as the magic solution to the internal contradictions of Obamacare. The guy is like a flim-flam man selling a patent medicine. Unfortunately, modern medicine hasn’t yet devised a cure for deceit and demagoguery.

The Etiquette Czar’s Rules for Patriotic Protest by Michelle MalkinCreators Syndicate Copyright 2009The White House press office is now Miss Manners’ office. President Obama’s press secretary Robert Gibbs took to the television airwaves this week to criticize congressional town hall protesters for “yelling.” Gibbs’ underling, Bill Barton, chastised voters not to “disrupt” and “scream.” Instead, he advised America to engage in a “spirited debate about health care, a real vigorous conversation about it.”What constitutes “spirited?” How do they define “vigorous?” When does forceful dissent become intolerable disruption? Herewith, the Obama Etiquette Czar’s Official Rules for Patriotic Protest.

Isn’t it obvious that most of our American ancestors came over from Europe because they wanted life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? They fled totalitarian regimes, socialist governments, and anti-Christian repression for the freedom that is afforded all Americans. We have the best health care in the world precisely because it is not operated by the government. Private industry drives innovation, government regulation or government-run health care eliminates innovation, awards bureaucrats, and ultimately leads to marginal health care in the long run.

The so-called public plan option — the part of Obamacare that would create a new government healthcare insurance entity at enormous cost and under bureaucratic control — has been unmasked as a means to a single-payer end. The plans supporters have said so, from public plan option architect Jacob Hacker to President Barack Obama himself. (Its all over YouTube.) Most Americans, of course, do not support a single-payer system, which used to be called socialized medicine before the word socialism was deemed beyond the bounds of mainstream political discourse.

Why it was ever there in the first place I don’t know, but the Finance Committee is tired of being beat up about it so the have decided to remove the provision . “On the Finance Committee, we are working very hard to avoid unintended consequences by methodically working through the complexities of all of these issues and policy options,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said in a statement.

Now the town-hall protesters are “evil-mongers” according to Sen. Harry Reid . One wonders if they are trying to be offensive or if they simply can’t help themselves. Mike Huckabee will be speaking at the East Jerusalem hotel, which was the subject of a recent fit of pique from the Obama administration. It is actually a team: Huckabee and Hikind: “‘This is an opportunity to shine the spotlight on Obama’s policy in Jerusalem, which has just been a horror,’ New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind told The Jerusalem Post .” Mary Robinson thinks that Durban got a bad rap.

All across the country, Americans alarmed by the Obama administrations proposed overhaul of health care have been coming together to vent their concerns in town-hall meetings and protests. Some are worried about the possible effects of ObamaCare on health care services, the cost of insurance, and the recovery of the economy; others are troubled by the intrusion of government into their lives.
