i’ve written before about my inside student, philip scott cannon, an inmate at the oregon state penitentiary serving life without parole for murdering three people.  he has spent the last ten years in prison, watching his two sons grow up in the stifling visiting room of the prison, and losing everything he owned to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for his defense.

My Note – The health care reform debate so far has been like having the makers of nuclear bombs at the table for disarmament talks – for understandable reasons – they will do all they can to undermine the success of those talks. With the health care industry more dangerous than heart disease and cancer put together in the number of preventable deaths that are a direct result of their misogyny, incompetence, barbaric practices, profiteering, and mishandling of knowledge and expertise, who needs an enemy?

August 14, 2009 I’m very thankful that Shaping Youth Nutrition Correspondent Rebecca Scritchfield, RD takes the helm today with her piece “The Price of Misinformation in Media,” as I’m trying to manage some media of my own to make sure I’m not misinterpreted either! As you know by now, I’m quite media shy, not just because I’m a former journalist who can ‘spot the spin’ with the best of ‘em, knowing what you say ‘can and will be used against you’ …It’s simply because truncated edits in mainstream media often leave even the clearest copy-checked quote hanging out there without context.

As of late Montreal has been getting a good roasting. We have seen temps in the high 20’s – it is 29c right now and a little too humid for my liking. And this weather will be hot through the weekend until Tuesday. I have been keeping to my routine daily, which is a good thing. I went to the Gym this afternoon and I spied the same group of boys who have been coming to the gym daily like myself. Each of them has their own routine they follow. We seem to be in the same areas throughout our workouts.

After I read Tim Barcz’s review of Roy Osherove’s “ The Art of Unit Testing ” and I knew I had to get a copy right away. It just arrived and I read it in one sitting.  I am so pleased that I did. I’ll quarrel with it … but do not let that deter you from rushing to buy your own copy. Let me say that again. I highly recommend this book – five stars -, especially to folks like me who are not deep into unit testing. This review is full of my grumpy disagreements. That’s how I engage with a good book.

There are four main sources for measurement of the mean global temperature–HadCRU3, GISS, RSS, and UAH. The first two of these 4 acronyms are reliant on ground measurement and the last two use only satellite microwaves measurement. I have always believed the satellite record, which, unfortunately only goes back to 1979, and been really suspicious of GISS (which is Warmie central) and been neutral to slightly suspicious of the HadCRU3.

This entry is part 11 of 18 in the series Freedom 21 Conference The title sounds foreboding, doesn’t it? It should. Codex Alimentarius is Latin for “food codes”, and it is a massive global effort to “harmonize and standardize food regulations, both domestic and international.” Attorney Scott Tips, of the National Health Federation , presented on the issues surrounding this initiative, and how it can have severe negative impacts on the health and longevity of the populace.

Woman wants fetus law changed – Topix I believe the proper phrase at this particular juncture is down the rabbit hole we go.  I mean, we’re talking about something here that is very problematic and can be very difficult, because we’re basically talking about changing the nature of how we define life in the world.  Now in my heart and my soul.  The three children who I lost that were my children were lost in various times within the pregnancy, with one being terminated.  And while, in my

Hey guys. Been pretty busy lately, trying to steadily pump out posts but after seeing this recent Ask John (thx owen), I remembered I had a post I’ve sitting on since winter, in which I talked about Ga-Rei Zero . Short story is, I dug it. Well, the holidays got me sick. Not fun. But being bed-ridden was a great excuse to do my first legit series marathon in a very long time. I chose the supernatural action thriller Ga-Rei Zero .

People encountered so far: San Diego, CA: Dan the car salesman, who, when speaking to me, ended every sentence with “sweetie.” San Bernardino, CA: The son of Paco of Paco’s Tacos , which had (not kidding) the best tacos I’ve ever had. Lake Havasu, AZ: The owner of “the first shaved ice shop in Lake Havasu.” We reminisced about Matsumoto’s shaved ice on the North Shore. His shaved ice was, in fact, comparable (although bean-free). Note: his stand was right next to the actual London Bridge .

New York City – 1980 – I had moved back from a rural area in upstate New York to subway cars covered with graffiti, moving through a graffiti covered trash filled junk pile of a city. (To this day, a wild flower on the side of a country road often appears to me like a piece of paper.) The beautiful red sun sets were caused by all the particles in the air and then there was that signature smell of pollution – you didn’t need to smoke to get lung cancer with that air.

I am a girl and I am sick of all the stereotypes about how girls cant fix cars and know about Car Parts . Are there any websites or books I could read to learn a good bit about cars and how to fix them and what not? I want to be one of those girls that when her car breaks down, I can just pop the hood and diagnose the problem myself. Anything helps! Thanks Firstly, you must consider that only a physical book on any subject is the best to learn from.

“But things have changed. These days it is quite common that students don’t even know the name of the person who is lecturing to them, let alone that they feel proud to be his student! And it is equally common that faculty talk about students, in particular undergraduates, as if they were animals from another planet. Students are no longer seen as part of the solution, but as part of the problem, and textbooks and lecturing techniques have become so condescending that, if I were a student, I would take offence.

If you are having trouble with over-eating, keeping your portions under control, or with sugar cravings – then please read this entire email. First, here is the simple truth. Most of us KNOW that we need to eat right if we want to stand a chance at losing body fat… But for most of us, eating right is just not that simple. We know what to do, but we don’t always do it… right? This isn’t your fault. Recent research points to fact that self control just isn’t programmed into our genes.
The “Skinny” on Omega 3 Fatsthebestrawfooddiet.com

By Kevin Gianni In this article, Rick Dina shares the skinny on Omega 3 fats. Rick Dina has been a raw foodist for over 20 years. Rick is a chiropractor and teaches a series called The Science of Raw Nutrition as well. Kevin: I do have a question and maybe you know the answer and maybe you don’t, it’s something I’ve always wondered about. Omega-3’s, you can find them in fish, you can find them in grass fed beef, you can find them in fish oil and all that, if you cook the fish and you heat it, Omega-3 oils are very volatile, does it destroy the Omega-3’s? Rick: That is an excellent question.

I am much impressed with the writings of Charles Eisenstein. He has written a very informative series on Money. Enjoy! This is reposted from The Reality Sandwich . Money and the Turning of the Age Charles Eisenstein As the economic meltdown proceeds to its next phase, we begin to see the unreality of much that we thought real. The verities of two generations become uncertain, and despite a lingering hope that a return to normalcy is just around the corner — in “the third quarter of 2009″ or “by the middle of 2010″ — the realization is dawning that normal isn’t coming back.

Smoke free is at it again. Making claims that just aren’t there and what little truth is there is exaggerated massively. In July, the FDA finally dispelled the rumors that e-cigarettes could be safer than regular cigarettes by releasing an analysis of the new product . The FDA’s results: What they fail to mention that there was only trace levels and not significant levels. And the trace levels were only a few. The same trace levels were found in the NRTs that they push.

We left in the early afternoon on Friday.  Just the four of us, and a hundred thousand other commuters knocking off a early to beat the traffic.  Right.  Hundreds of miles of idling vehicles pointed east, bumper to bumper, ad infinitum.  80 was a river of cars frozen solid.  FUCK.  It’s the kind of soul-rending anticlimax that makes you want to give up on a vacation, on all vacations, on belief in freedom or goodness in the world, and just crawl the fuck home to your dreary rut.

August 13, 2009 ( EurekAlert ) – The team, in collaboration with University Hospital Aintree, the University of Warwick and researchers in Sweden, found that people classified as obese and those with pre-diabetes have raised levels of a protein called SPARC, that can cause tissue scarring. The research revealed that an increase in insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar levels, and leptin, a hormone that regulates appetite, can trigger an increase in SPARC, which can prevent the proper storage of fat in fat tissue cells.

As the government continues to work on crafting our first national broadband plan, there’s been a lot of talk about how that process is consumer-centric, transparent, and data-driven. The FCC has spent the last few months talking about how they might actually start using real data to make policy decisions (astounding). Uncle Sam has unveiled a series of workshops to help consumers feel involved in the process (amazing). The FCC even says they’ll be using more scientists and engineers and fewer lawyers and policy wonks (incredible).

I am morbidly obese, according to the latest guidelines. My BMI is an astounding 48. I am 130-150 lbs overweight, depending on whose chart you use. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t put a picture of myself up on the website for a long time. I know how people judge you if you are obese. So I have been around the Fat Acceptance websites for years. And I believe in Fat Acceptance. For me, Fat Acceptance has to do with not being discriminated against.

This blog post was written for a lay audience so more advanced readers will need to indulge me here… *** I really enjoy sci-fi action movies. I love the convincing special effects and the fact that heroes can accomplish the physically impossible without skipping a beat. Implausible events unfurl with convincing reality, and you never know what might happen with the plot.

Rhode Island is the smallest state, about the size of Houston, Texas actually. That’s no secret, but when considering all the people and places I’ve encountered in R.I. since I first moved here in 1980, it seems a little bigger, at least geographically. Home state ramblings aside, I was quite revolted earlier this week to see evidence of a “trash vortex” the size of two Texas’ that is currently swirling in the Pacific Ocean out in the region north of Hawaii.

Weight loss programs occupy a prominent place in the media. The business of weight loss is on the high growth track. Development and speedy urbanization is sweeping across vast areas rapidly. Lifestyles have changed with the intervention of science and technology into every day aspect of life. Food habits have changed fast. Traditional locally grown food is replaced by fast food and junk food produced in factories. Food that is easy to prepare is favored due to the fast life.

You can stop busting hump to make yourself “Green”.    It’s almost over.  According to the United Nations “We have just four months. Four months to secure the future of our planet.” So, there you have it.  The matter is settled.   No way to make that deadline without shutting down the United States’ and other First World economies, depopulating the cities and living off the land.  Y’know, like Pol Pot did when he turned Cambodia into a paradise.

We have a beach vacation next month so we started school very early this year. We plan to do some school on vacation but I don’t want to take the large Math, English, and History books with us. My plan is to do a lot of earth science, writing, art and some history on vacation (but the kind of history lessons that don’t require all the large heavy books) and I plan for him to do daily math drills (math fact practice but without the large math book). Our school year so far is going WONDERFUL!!! Everyone is excited and having fun.

The findings: the average user of food stamps had a Body Mass Index (BMI) 1.15 points higher than non-users. The link between food stamps and higher weight was almost entirely based on women users, who averaged 1.24 points higher BMI than those not in the program, the study found. For an average American woman, this would mean an increase in weight of 5.8 pounds.

However, some of the more interesting moments of the great guitar summit featuring Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White, are in fact relatively quiet. Indeed, all three rock stars prove engagingly eloquent when discussing their instruments in Davis Guggenheim’s It Might Get Loud (trailer here ) , opening in New York and Los Angeles this Friday. Loud’s concept is nearly foolproof: get together three rock guitarists with legit credibility as musicians to discuss music and jam.
