Conservatives shouldn’t get too excited defending insurance companies. Yes, the liberal tactic of scapegoating private actors in order to justify an expansion of government power is deplorable.  Defenders of free markets have a right to object to those efforts. But we must also be careful not to forget that these very same private actors are not principled believers of free markets, but rather self-interested entities more than willing to advocate for government meddling when it suits their own

No powers can be exercised by the Congress which are prohibited by the Constitution or which are contrary to its spirit.   – Justice John McLean, Dred Scott v. Sandford, 1857 Is a federal government takeover of the health care system constitutional? Some argue that under the Constitution, Congress is not authorized to regulate or subsidize health care . Michael Boldin, founder of The Tenth Amendment Center , told WND that if citizens want to understand whether health care is constitutional, they must first understand the function of the Constitution.

It’s funny in its own vicious, twisted, psychotic little way.  Nancy Pelosi calls American citizens “un-American” and compares them to swastika-toting Nazis as she charges them with being “Astroturf.”  And Harry Reid officially added the word “evil mongers” to the English language to describe opponents of the Democrats’ health care agenda. Meanwhile : Who are the real thugs? Democrats attack congressional town hall protesters as “Brown Shirts” — likening taxpayer activists across the country to Hitler’s storm troopers.

Germany is a lot smaller than the U.S., but it has a lot more health insurers to choose from, and cheaper health-care costs. One reason might be more competition: in the U.S., you can’t buy individual health insurance from an out-of-state insurer, since an obsolete federal law lets states block purchases across state lines, taking away interstate-shopping rights that citizens would otherwise enjoy under the the Constitution’s Interstate Commerce Clause.

Mowed lawn(s), did some weeding(okay, wife did the weeding) and now getting ready to go to a wedding. OK…I’ve recovered enough from my Clorox bleach bath…back into the crappile I go. Having dispatched with the slut-shaming of Elizabeth Wood, our intrepid heroines of Sex Fascism now broaden their horizons to include the broader community of “sex radicals” who they say are behind the effort to deny them (Hughes and Brooks, that is) their desired legislation in Rhode Island to outlaw “indoor prostitution”. Second, why are they interested in prostitution law in Rhode Island? None of the letter signers lives or works in Rhode Island.

Jonah Goldberg sums up the contradictions of Obamacare beautifully: Imagine you’re in charge of bringing pie to a company picnic. You’re planning to provide dessert for 100 people. Then, your boss says you need to hand out pie to 150. Fine, you say, I’ll make more pies. But — oh no! — you can’t because you’ve also been told costs must go down. OK, then you can cut slices of the existing pies smaller so everyone can have a piece. Wait! You can’t do that either because you’re not allowed to ration (i.e., give less to more).

Guest Voice posts do not necessarily reflect the viewpoint of TMV or its many writers. Un-American? Protests are as American as Apple Pie by Floyd and Mary Beth Brown Un-American, disruptive, distorters of truth, manufactured outrage, Astroturf, hired guns, and Nazis are all terms used by President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and their liberal allies to disparage those who are speaking out at healthcare town hall meetings. Rather than address the legitimate questions being raised about Obamacare, the power elite have chosen to attack with personal insults.

Deputy Assistant Under-Minister of Truth Linda Douglass tried her best to dodge the questions from Wolf Blitzer regarding the 150 million dollars PhARMA is agreeing to pay for advertising to support ObamaCare socialism: BLITZER: Did PhRMA, in exchange, make a promise of $150 million to pay for advertising to help the president’s plan go forward? DOUGLASS: What — what you have, Wolf, is this deal that is $80 billion.

Plants. There are a helluva lot of them at these townhalls. I’m talking about Democrat/Liberal rats that act as Republicans and Conservatives. We all saw or heard about the eleven year old girl, Julia Hall. She asked a question: “How do kids know what is true, and why do people want a new system that can — that help more of us?” Before that, she commented on the “signs saying mean things” about ObamaCare. Break out the violins, people. This is gonna put onions to shame.

By Blake Sietz “Here in America we are descended in blood and in spirit from revolutionists and rebels - men and women who dare to dissent from accepted doctrine. As their heirs, may we never confuse honest dissent with disloyal subversion.” –Dwight Eisenhower As you may have already seen, the media is abuzz with news of town hall meetings, “death panels” , and the “emergence of socialized medicine”. But what us generally-healthy teenagers don’t take the time to consider is that the health care debate (and some would say debacle) is important to everyone, regardless of age.

Found the following excerpt over at Michelle Malkins blog No shouting. Congressional representatives cannot sell Obamacare with mobs of unruly senior citizens and small business owners interrupting to press them on specific sections of the bill. Do refrain from boisterous shrieking against those who accuse you of lacking patriotism – unless you are Hillary Clinton , who bellowed at the top of her lungs in 2003: “I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you’re not patriotic.

from CNN.com With Congress on its August recess, lawmakers are back in their home districts to meet with their constituents. Across the country, members of Congress are holding town hall meetings where voters are encouraged to voice any questions or concerns about what’s happening on Capitol Hill. Health care reform has dominated the conversation at the meetings.

It’s interesting to me that in 1961, Ronald Reagan talked about the origins of socialized medicine, and in 2009, he’s still got it exactly right. It’s also a shame that in 2009, Ronald Reagan is still the most important and effective leader of conservatism, if not libertarianism, that there is. As much as Obama has achieved on the nearly impossible task of uniting the Republican party, there is still no effective leadership. Just an effective ground game.

Whole Foods Market I ran across two news stories this morning that I find a little shocking.  When I say “bias busters” in the title I am talking about my own bias being busted.  Not earth shaking shocking but … definitely surprising.  John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, criticizes Obamacare and in San Francisco people are protesting … against Obamacare too! Jonah Goldberg explains : Under the plan discussed at President Obama’s infomercial-esqe town halls, America would cut costs and expand coverage while avoiding rationing. Apparently, it’s paranoid to think that’s too good to be true. Imagine you’re in charge of bringing pie to a company picnic. You’re planning to provide dessert for 100 people. Then, your boss says you need to hand out pie to 150. Fine, you say, I’ll make more pies. But — oh no! — you can’t, because you’ve also been told costs must go down.

There is a strange idea that it’s “cynical” and “dishonest” to be skeptical of the claim that (a) a new entitlement will be created (b) that will lead to more medical services being consumed by more people and (c) that this regime cannot save costs as promised without rationing, particularly rationing aimed at reducing care for the elderly.  Some have called the bureaucrats who will make this decision “death panels,” which means many things, but includes the promotion of best practices that show little regard for the elderly and their welfare and paying doctors for suggestive counseling to the elderly for “nonresuscitation” and other death-accelerating measures.

I don’t know whether to be proud of all those citizens showing up at the town hall meetings, many to voice their protest over proposed health care laws, or whether to be disgusted with all the demagoguery going on, such as that from those Republican lawmakers who voted for a provision in 2003 they now claim to be against and further claim is a measure promoting euthanasia. I know there is legitimate concern over proposed revisions to our health care laws but there is so much lying on all sides concerned that it is depressing.

I listened to Dan’s podcast “Read It and Weep” on the airplane home yesterday, and it made me re-think my position on something I’ve been pretty sure about for many years. What side of the argument do you come down on in these issues: 1- seat-belt laws 2- Anti-Smoking laws 3- motorcycle helmet laws I’ve understood and agreed that if you make bad personal choices that cost me money, then you should change that behavior (though laws) because you are infringing on my right by wasting my money.

Whole Foods CEO John Mackey (who is a libertarian, by the way) had an editorial in the WSJ a few days ago proposing a set of reforms that would drastically improve health care in the U.S. , as an alternative to Obamacare. Now, here’s the thing: the essay barely mentions anything other than the proposed reforms, and that they would probably work better than socializing health care – and yet it is driving liberals into a froth (as just about everything seems to) to the point where they’re threatening to boycott the chain.

So much for the oft-repeated talking point that the American people are demanding we do something : Thirty-five percent (35%) of American voters say passage of the bill currently working its way through Congress would be better than not passing any health care reform legislation this year. However, a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that most voters (54%) say no health care reform passed by Congress this year would be the better option.

I’m incredulous at the continuing response of the Democrats in our congressional delegation who say they’ve done all the outreach they’re going to do on Obamacare: South Dakota’s two congressional Democrats say they’ve done ample public outreach on health care reform despite not holding any public town hall meetings on the subject during Congress’ August recess. Sen. Tim Johnson and Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin have been at events throughout the state, their offices say, and the two will continue to meet with constituents during the recess.

It’s a curious phenomenon. Every once in a while, maybe every six months or so, some event in the media reminds Whole Foods (WFMI) shoppers that the company’s (in)famous CEO John Mackey most likely doesn’t share their political beliefs. Mackey is an anti-union libertarian. Most of his shoppers aren’t. And so it is that his recent op-ed slamming Obamacare has got some predictable blowback from customers, who, generally speaking, are sympathetic to the President and schemes that move us closer to universal care.

  1. Paul says:

It’s funny we hear Republicans say that they do not want “faceless bureaucrats” making medical decisions but they have no problem with “private sector” “faceless bureaucrats” daily declining medical coverage and financially ruining good hard working people (honestly where can they go with a pre-condition). And who says that the “private sector” is always right, do we forget failures like Long-Term Capital, WorldCom, Global Crossing, Enron, Tyco, AIG and Lehman Brothers. Of course the federal government will destroy heathcare by getting involved, Oh but wait, Medicare and Medicaid and our military men and women and the Senate and Congress get the best heathcare in the world, and oh, that’s right, its run by our federal government. I can understand why some may think that the federal government will fail, if you look at the past eight years as a current history, with failures like the financial meltdown and Katrina but the facts is they can and if we support them they will succeed.

How does shouting down to stop the conversation of the healthcare debate at town hall meetings, endears them to anyone. Especially when the organizations that are telling them where to go and what to do and say are Republicans political operatives, not real grassroots. How does shouting someone down or chasing them out like a “lynch mob” advanced the debate, it does not. So I think the American people will see through all of this and know, like the teabagger, the birthers, these lynch mobs types AKA “screamers” are just the same, people who have to resort to these tactics because they have no leadership to articulate what they real want. It’s easy to pickup a bus load of people who hate, and that’s all I been seeing, they hate and can’t debate. Too bad.
