I’ve had a lot of time to accumulate meaningless junk, inlcuding a great deal of paperwork with more value to the tree it came from than it ever was to me. Anyway, I’ve got a pile of paperwork scattered around me right and I thought I’d share any gems of information that come my way: The Biological Sciences Review , basically the review for A level and GCSE students in the life sciences. It’s not the whole thing but a photocopy of a double page spread called Stuck with Structures? a guide to some of the compounds biology students come across in their course.

Another radical..shocking isnt it? President Obama’s pick to serve as the assistant secretary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is an “aggressively anti-business” proponent of junk science who should not be confirmed by the Senate, his critics say. Dr. David Michaels, a research professor and interim chairman in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services, was nominated on July 28 to become OSHA’s next assistant secretary.

There are many things you can change in your diet when you are pregnant. When you decide you are ready to have a baby your doctor may tell you to start on those pre-natal vitamins right away. Taking those vitamins is one of the most important things you can do for your baby while you are pregnant. You may need to try a few different brands until you find the one that you like. Some may cause you to have nausea, and since you need to take is every day it is important to find one that is right for you.

I’m sure this won’t be the last device process that is questioned, but the good news today is technology with devices, as now you will begin seeing more implanted devices reporting data, how it’s working, problem areas, etc. This may be in the area more so of clinical trials, but who knows how far it will extend. For goodness sales, Goodyear has been putting chips in tires for years now to tell their tale, was the tire over inflated during use, underinflated, etc. Granted with human implants we are talking an entire different and much more complex system than just a tire by all means as a device is not a visitor as is a drug, it comes to live with you.

“A rare and inspiring story of hope in rural Africa, a true story of youth challenging and winning against all of the adversity that life throws at it. William represents a new generation of Africans, using ingenuity and invention to overcome life’s challenges. Where so many tilt at windmills, William builds them!” Three years ago I came across a fascinating story of a young man in Malawi who had built a windmill from scratch, and I wrote about it on AfriGadget .

Welcome to Biotech Nation, which our speaker Moira Gunn says is “all about you.” And also this: “biotechnolgy is driving a third of the world’s economy.”Her talk is entitled “the new genomics and being human.”"What about DNA is so interesting?” DNA in yourself literally carries the program of you; scientists have only known the structure since 1953.

Or, as Patrick Michaels headlines it, “The Dog Ate” it. Excerpt: Imagine if there were no reliable records of global surface temperature. Raucous policy debates such as cap-and-trade would have no scientific basis, Al Gore would at this point be little more than a historical footnote, and President Obama would not be spending this U.N. session talking up a (likely unattainable) international climate deal in Copenhagen in December.

There is a friend of mine who’s mind I reserve for the utmost respect, who has recently written a blog which sparks so much thought. I have asked him if I can repost here for my audience also, which he has let me do so kindly. The following post is entitled “The Close-Mindedness of Open-Mindedness” by Paul Goodsell I constantly get accursed of being close-minded. Usually this is because my views differ from theirs. But what is it to be open-minded? Surely there is a limit to what you ought to let in.

Progress has been both slow and very frustrating over the last couple of days. On Wednesday morning we started building up the Houston off the shelf wall cabinets. First up, was the corner wall unit to the right hand side of the window. We’d already had issues with Wickes because unlike other corner units we have come across, it came in 2 parts. Most bizarre, but to cut a long story short, it took us 3 hours to get the damn thing up on the wall.

David Brown recently commented on a Sciencebase item on the obesity epidemic . This is the complete transcript of his comment: In both the UK and the USA, inappropriate dietary advice from government agencies is largely responsible for the perpetuating high rates of obesity and chronic disease. In the USA, the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) is the arm of the Agriculture Department that formulates the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA).
