From the Wall Street Journal: President Obama’s effort to deny that his mandate to buy insurance is a tax has taken another thumping, this time from fellow Democrats in the Senate Finance Committee. Chairman Max Baucus’s bill includes the so-called individual mandate, along with what he calls a $1,900 “excise tax” if you don’t buy health insurance. (It had been as much as $3,800 but Democrats reduced the amount last week to minimize the political sticker shock.) And, lo, it turns out that if you don’t pay that tax, the IRS could punish you with a $25,000 fine or up to a year in jail, or both.

The writing was on the wall , but it is official. The Senate Finance Committee voted to kill the public option in ObamaCare. Sen. Jay Rockefeller’s (D-W.Va.) amendment went down by a lopsided (and bipartisan) margin of 15-8, with Democrats Baucus, Carper of Delaware, Conrad of North Dakota, Lincoln of Arkansas, and Nelson of Florida, joining all 10 Republicans in voting no. Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) amendment didn’t fare much better, losing by a 13-10 margin, with Carper and Nelson voting aye.

A new Rasmussen poll shows that a plurality of Americans oppose increase troop deployment to Afghanistan: Americans are closely divided over whether the United States should send more troops to fight the war in Afghanistan, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Thirty-seven percent (37%) say yes to sending more troops, while 40% say no. Twenty-three percent (23%) are not sure. (…) Twenty percent (20%) of U.S. voters say all American troops should be brought home from Afghanistan immediately .

Kennedy fears that supercharged passions fueling the national health-care debate may lead to violence.Drawing on his family’s violent past, the Democratic congressman told roughly 75 people gathered at a private health-care forum Saturday morning that opponents of Democrat-backed health-care legislation had gone too far.

Democratic Senators Cantwell and Rockefeller may be able to vote for the ObamaCare bill in the U.S. Senate because their promise to vote against a bill without the public option may be null and void if Senator Harkins claim that “we have the votes” in the Senate is true.  Senator Harkin claims he has polled his Democratic colleagues and announced his findings on a radio show, the key part of his interview is here .

Earlier, ACORN was caught in a scandal, promoting child prostitution . Both Houses of Congress voted to cut off federal funds to ACORN.  Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and other ACORN supporters argued that this was an unconstitutional bill of attainder. Hans Von Spakovsky, a legal scholar at the Heritage Foundation, explains why it is perfectly constitutional to cut off funds to ACORN, under controlling Supreme Court precedent. ACORN receives taxpayer money despite a long history of financial fraud , vote fraud , and tax evasion .

The big news today seems to be that the Senate Finance Committee (where the Senate’s version of Obamacare has been stuck in the mud for weeks now) rejected two attempts to insert a “public option” into the health care bill. This will tempt some Republicans to declare victory, but I think that’s what the Democrats want . The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday rejected two Democratic amendments that would have created a government-run “public option” as part an overhaul of the nation’s health-insurance system, with the panel’s chairman bowing to staunch Republican opposition that he said would prevent final passage of a bill containing such a provision.

The Senate Finance Committee voted to defeat an amendment that would have added a public option to the Max Baucus plan for a health-care system overhaul, 15-8, in a vote that split Democrats and unified Republicans.  It presents a victory for Baucus but a setback for the Obama administration, which insisted on getting a public option in a speech to Congress three weeks ago:Liberal Democrats failed Tuesday to inject a government-run insurance option into sweeping health care legislation taking shape in the Senate Finance Committee, despite widespread accusations that private insurers routinely deny coverage in pursuit of higher profits.The 15-8 rejection marked a victory for Sen.

Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) displays all the class and sobriety of his late father, slyly attempting to tie opposition to Obamacare to a noted segregationist: “It’s very, very dangerous,” Kennedy said in the interview. “We put a lot of people in jail around the world for threatening our country’s security. But this atmosphere of attack that doesn’t attack the issue, but attacks the people, is very disruptive to the institution of democracy, which relies on a respect for the opposition.” He continued: “George Wallace didn’t need a gun to pull a trigger.

Even the New York Times recognizes that the abortion issue could derail ObamaCare, and candidly admits that despite the White House and President Obama pledging that no federal dollars will fund abortion:  ”The question looms as a test of President Obama ’s campaign pledge to support abortion rights but seek middle ground with those who do not. As Democrats see the poll numbers slipping with Obamacare and liberals find them self losing political ground on immigration as well, The Washington Times is reporting that House Democrats is pushing back and arguing that any health care bill should extend some access to illegal immigrants.

No, I’m not talking ancient naval warfare, or homosexual proclivities either. Although some may believe that what is about to happen in the Senate is in fact akin to the latter for some of the poor souls in various Graybar Hotels . In broader terms, the big task for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is to get 60 votes in the Senate in order to block a Republican filibuster. But Reid could also implement a legislative option known as reconciliation, which would only require 51 senators.

Today we might see a little blue on blue violence, we’ll hope at least. Today the Senate Finance Committee is meeting to mark-up or debate and vote on the health-care bill. Specifically whether or not to add a so-called public option to Obamacare. You can watch the live debate below. Currently the public plan is not expected to get a majority of the Committee’s support. If it somehow does, then we’re all in trouble.

( - promoted by Rocky Mountain Right - ) The Republican Study Committee has proposed the  “EMPOWERING PATIENTS FIRST ACT”  as a reply to ObamaCare. Few will read it, but it shows that at least some Republican members of Congress are interested in health insurance reforms. I hope they’ll still be interested in fixing the health insurance markets after 2010 when they’ll either control Congress or at least will have more say about how Congress will fund or under fund ObamaCare, whatever that may be.

President Obama says it’s a “fabrication” and “distraction” to assert that the Democrats’ health care takeover bills subsidize abortion.Well, not to distract you, but the NYT reports today:Representative Bart Stupak, a Democratic opponent of abortion, is pressing for a ban on health care subsidies for abortions.Abortion opponents in both the House and the Senate are seeking to block the millions of middle- and lower-income people who might receive federal insurance subsidies to help them buy health coverage from using the money on plans that cover abortion.

Does anyone get the feeling that Barack Obama would have made a great summer-camp cabin mate?  Especially around the campfire, as kids began telling ghost stories to scare everyone else, Obama would probably have told the most outrageous and frightening stories — simply by embellishing stories he heard from other people.  As President, he has shown himself adept at this practice, having wildly embellished two health-care horror stories in the past month to frighten people into backing ObamaCare:One

I assume people saw Jimmy Carter’s remarks calling the anti-Obamacare demonstrators “racist.” I thought I’d point out that on CNN, he was quoted as saying , “they wave signs in the air that said we should have buried Obama with Kennedy, those kinds of things are beyond the bounds.” Carter intentionally lied, of course, to make it sound like evil resistors were implying murder. The signs clearly said , “Bury Obamacare with Kennedy.” But no one in the media called this to the carpet.
