Washington, Connecticut. The urge, some might say mania with which our species has attempted to distance itself from Nature is a defining occupation and it appears to be quickening in this mechanized modern era, despite oft-discussed presumptions of the new “Green” Politics. Though we cannot yet cheat death, we negotiate with it as a matter of course and are forever engaged in the Methodological Skepticism of Cartesian thought.

When writing articles for Answers In Genesis magazines, those seemingly bottomless pools of anti-scientific pseudo-profundities and woefully ignorant gotcha pieces ran by Ken Ham, not even basic logic seems to be allowed. How else could you explain this article tackling the issue of matter/antimatter disparity predicted to have occurred after the Big Bang? After misrepresenting one of theory’s claims, correcting himself by quoting actual scientists and explaining what would’ve happened to the initial wealth of antimatter created by the blast, the author still demands that cosmologists produce the missing antimatter or admit that the theory is a bust.

The Lost Tiki Palaces of Detroit: Stories, Michael Zadoorian, Wayne State University PressThe Made in Michigan Writers Series showcases some of the state’s best new, or not so new, writers. Michael Zadoorian is one of these writers, not so new, with two novels (The Leisure Seeker and Second Hand) already on the shelf. While the country struggles and just begins to show signs of emerging from economic muck, and more often than not, the national finger is pointed at Detroit as the example of the worst anywhere, dying and in parts already dead… Zadoorian rises from those ashes and finds the grit and pearl of story to tell.No mistake, these are pearls.

The Washington Post claimed near-supernatural powers for a tiny beer tax on Monday. A booze tax, write Lloyd I. Sederer and Eric Goplerud, will pay for health care reform. But that’s not all!: Research indicates that a 10 percent increase in current alcohol excise taxes—that is a penny for a beer—would result in less drinking, especially among underage drinkers, reducing rape, robbery, domestic violence and liver disease.

An idea whose time has come? GIFTegrity—an Alternative to Market Timothy Wilken, MD Tensegrity is the pattern that results when push and pull have a win-win relationship with each other. The pull is continuous and the push is discontinuous. The continuous pull is balanced by the discontinuous push producing an integrity of tension and compression. This creates a powerful self-stabilizing system. The term tensegrity comes from synergic science.

WASHINGTON — Two Senate Democrats Wednesday unveiled climate legislation that aims to drastically cut greenhouse-gas emissions beginning in 2012, starting an effort that threatens to divide the party amid opposition from coal, manufacturing and oil interests. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry outlined the measure, which would cut emissions from 2005 levels 20% by 2020 and more than 80% by 2050.

I have yet to read the book, but this story of a self-taught Malawian boy building a windmill to bring electricity to his village is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Mind you, he built this windmill out of parts from a junk yard. I am totally blown away. And that is just the beginning. William Kamkwamba was kicked out of school because his family could not afford to pay the roughly $80 a year tuition. Instead of hanging his head, William went to go to the library. It was there he found the book, Using Energy .

I don’t want to sound like a climate crank — there are more than enough of them out there, on both sides of the issue — and I’m still very much of the opinion that the question of anthropomorphic global warming/climate change still needs a lot of work to answer. If human activities are causing the planet’s atmosphere to warm up in excess of what the natural feedback systems of the planet can handle, then we do need to look at ways to reduce our contribution to that warming.

Of all the junk food out there in the world, my one weakness is pizza. Burgers just don’t do it for me, potato chips are just okay in my book, and hot dogs? Forget about them. Give me a thin crust pizza, with a layer of tomato sauce and bubbling cheese, and you’ll have one happy girl. I don’t know where my love of pizza began, but the earliest I can trace it to is the pizza parties that teachers seemed to be perpetually throwing back in elementary school.

If we are buying a CD it has to be the latest release from the new one hit wonder, we don’t care if the song writer couldn’t tell melody from harmony or that the singer is incapable of carrying a tune, all that matters is that it’s new.
