My wife and I drove 500 miles round trip to Busch Stadium Saturday afternoon to see the Cards drop another close one to the playoff-less Brewers. They did the same the prior evening, as well as Sunday, looking bad in each game. While most know of the  Dodgers’ struggles  the past fortnight or so, they finished by winning their final two games.  And though St. Louis had little to play for other than home field in round one, the Redbirds dropped eight of their final ten, mostly to teams now playing golf.

On Wednesday afternoon, the postseason finally gets underway just as crisp weather spreads through the Midwest. After a semi-lackluster September ended another memorable campaign , the final few days were intense, especially in the AL Central, where we enjoyed a four and a half hour Tuesday night “play-in” classic  that had everything a sports fan could desire. To me, 2009 does not give a clear favorite for the title. No, the Yankees, despite their 103  wins, are not a shoo-in.

By DAVE CAMPBELL (AP) – 9 minutes ago MINNEAPOLIS — Alexi Casilla singled home the winning run with one out in the 12th inning and the Minnesota Twins rallied past Detroit 6-5 in the AL Central tiebreaker Tuesday night, completing a colossal collapse for the Tigers. The Tigers became the first team in major league history to blow a three-game lead with four games left. The Twins overcame a seven-game gap in the final month, went 17-4 to pull even on the final weekend and won their fifth division title in eight years.

But first, I want to congratulate my Dodgers on clinching the NL west.  Can’t wait ’til the playoffs. Now on to Michael Crabtree, the 49ers first round pick from this year’s draft. Looks like he’s ready to negotiate a contract deal so he can jump on the Niners’ 3-1 bandwagon.  I don’t give two flying effs.  His love for the game is obviously not as great as his love for money.

It has been a long baseball season, made a bit longer by the Tigers-Twins one game playoff that had no end. The Philadelphia Phillies led the National League East for much of the year, leaving little doubt that they would take the division. The same can be said for the St. Louis Cardinals who completely dominated the Central Division the entire second half of the year. The West, however, was a little dicey.

This is a very intriguing series on many levels. The Cardinals up until a recent slide were seen as the team to beat for much of the 2nd half of the season. The Dodgers were seen as the team to beat for the 1st half of the season. Back in July I said the Dodgers wouldn’t win the pennant, and I’m sticking with to my guns here. What needs to happen for each team The Cardinals just need to stick with their plan get timely hitting and pitch like they did during the regular season.

Right now, delicious Dome Dogs will be cooking in Minneapolis’ Hubert H. Humphrey Dome for what may be the final time . The Twins move to a new outdoor park next year – a shiny piece of work they’re calling Target Field – and they’re leaving the dogs behind to rot. (Or serve at Vikings games, I guess.) But while the team was supposed to have made its last dome appearance on Sunday, the Twins fucked around and tied the Tigers for the AL Central lead instead, forcing a one-game playoff for the third time in four years.

I listened to most of the interview with Omar Minaya and Jeff Wilpon yesterday on WFAN. I wish it had been with someone other than Mike Francesa who is very biased, and very amateurish, when it comes to the Mets. However Francesa is the guy that gets the ‘big’ guests due to reputation and seniority, so we have to deal with it. Here is a list of things I expect from the Mets going forward. Also a list of things Francesa should’ve asked.

In the early 80s, Bill James introduced a formula to predict the outcome of a baseball game given the winning percentages of the two teams involved.  Here’s how it works. Let A be the winning percentage of Team A. Let B be the winning percentage of Team B. The probability that Team A will defeat Team B is given by (Prob.

As the start of the postseason approaches, Big League Stew’s Alex Remington will take a look at the statistics that might make a difference in each series. Next up is Red Sox-Angels, a familiar matchup which starts in Anaheim, likely on Thursday. 12 The number of consecutive years that Bobby Abreu (notes) has hit at least 15 homers and stolen at least 15 bases. He always seems like an uncomfortable Yankee, but he has been the perfect Angel: laid-back, understated, and hits for a high average with both power and speed.

Just look at the photo spread above. Amazing isn’t it? Heading into the last two seasons, the Cleveland Indians were darlings of the media, picked by many to win the AL Central, and by some to win the American League. Seems comical now doesn’t it? It is rather sad, but look at some of the talent that will be competing for the ring this October, and you will find yourself looking at a who’s who of ex-Indians.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Free Pick: St. Louis Cardinals (Series Pick) ( -135 odds ) Tue Oct 13 ‘09 8:05p Visit Touthouse.com for more MLB odds and baseball picks from LT Profits The St. Louis Cardinals are our choice to win the World Series this season, but first things first. We feel that their pitching edge is enough to offset the home field advantage that the Los Angeles Dodgers own in the NLDS.

Just in time for the 2009 postseason, Bugs&Cranks welcomes a new writer. Emma Span has written for all kinds of publications we’ve actually heard of. Like, print stuff. She writes about New York baseball on her own blog Eephus Pitch . And she Yankeefies regularly at BronxBanter , our favorite Yankees site. (a distinction akin to “world’s greatest brussels sprouts” or “mild waterboarding.”) She’s even got a book due in the spring. But best of all, she’s a terrific writer and she can bring the funny.

October. The cool, crisp air and beautiful changing of the leaves has returned. Football is in full swing, and hockey is getting started, but there is nothing, and I mean nothing, like baseball in October. In fact, playoff baseball may be the most special tradition or playoffs in any sport. It’s the playoffs that remind us why this is our national part-time, and not football, why this is our sport and why we love it so much. The drama, the intensity, and most of all – the unpredictable nature of the games.

It’s wildfire season here in the west, and as happens this time every year, the local news shows are rife with reports filled with everything from preventative measures, to ideas for emergency getaway supply kits, and so on, and so on, and so on. All good stuff to know, but one thing is always missing from this wall-to-wall fire news: music. No, I’m not suggesting they score some groovy tunes over the endless footage of burning hillsides and ash-covered wretches unrolling sleeping bags in high school gymnasiums (though it would a daring, monotony-breaking way to get some young, visionary assistant editor fired).

With the game’s marquee team noticeably absent, this year’s MLB playoffs are virtually guaranteed to be a ratings disaster.  There’s a palpable death of anticipation and excitement that’s almost reminiscent of 2007’s infamous Worst NLCS Ever . And yet, there are some big names still playing and fifteen reasons to stay mildly interested in baseball this October.  Here’s a quick rundown of the key players on every team still playing: TWINS Delmon Young LF/DH (.283 AVG, .413 SLG)

I love seeing how 2 different photographers tackle the same assignment. Both Jerry and Ryan came up with the same idea on their own. In this case, one is an Angels fan, the other favors the Dodgers. Lighting Placement of props and composition aside, the most obvious difference you’ll see is choice of lighting. Since you get to decide everything about a Still Life, its placement is extremely important.

The invaluable MSTI tells us why we’d rather face the Cardinals (they suck against LHP’s, and all their offense is concentrated in one big mofo named Albert Pujols — you may have heard of him), guesses at the NLDS roster , and perhaps most importantly, tells us something we already knew about Fox Sports , i.e. they do not understand baseball whatsoever. In that same vein, Sean Forman does : These ratings show the Dodgers to be a legitimate 95-win team [note: they actually did finish 95-67: RLM] and the best team in the National League by a wide margin.

Manny Ramirez As the Dodgers prepare to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS, there are a number of intriguing questions facing the Dodgers, but none more interesting than what is going on with Manny Ramirez and the role momentum plays in the playoffs. Will the Real Manny Ramirez Show Up?  It’s becoming increasingly clear that for the Dodgers to win the series and advance to the next round, their bats must come alive against the powerful Cardinal pitching.  We all know about Ethier’s success at home vs.

The baseball season has finally ended, and the Dodgers won the National League, and the Angles won the AL West. The best thing of all on the last day of the regular season is that i gained three points in my Fantasy Baseball League, and tied for 3rd place and into the money. I was down below the cut line for most of the past two months, but slowly started creeping back up, and to dome clutch play of a few of my players i gained three points in the standing and tied my old intern friend for the final place.

Playoffs notwithstanding, for most baseball fans today is the first day of the long winter. The season is over, the concession stands are empty, the lockerrooms bare as the players have packed up to go fishing or hunting or whatever they do in the off-season. For followers of the Chicago Cubs, the Cleveland Indians, the Kansas City Royals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the San Francisco Giants, another year has passed without post-season play.

Todd Helton and the Rockies are looking to regain their magic from 2007. Flashback to only two years ago, 2007 and these same two teams were to meet in the NL Division Series. The Philadelphia Phillies had overcome a seven game deficit with 17 games to play. Trying to erase some ghosts of their own, particularly the “Big Choke” of 1964 when the Phillies blew a six game lead with 10 games to go against the St. Louis Cardinals, this team came charging down the stretch led by their big three Ryan Howard, Chase, Utley and NL MVP winner Jimmy Rollins.

Welcome to the Jungle Baby! I think Axel said it best. This is a Jungle this week. The College Football season is a jungle. The NFL is a Jungle. THE MLB is a Jungle. Everything is a mess. I’m totally a child of the 80’s and nothing better sums up the current state of sports than a Gun ‘N Roses song. Who better to express the incredible amount of angst even fans of good teams are feeling? Who better displays raw emotion like a band that was completely messed up when they did all their recording and yet still sounded perfect? Nobody I tell you.

162 games was enough for seven of the eight playoff teams this year.  However, we won’t know the winner of the one-game playoff between Detroit and Minnesota until tomorrow night.  For now, though, we’ll take a look at playoff scenarios for both teams against the Yankees, in addition to the Red Sox-Angels, Phillies-Rockies, and Cardinals-Dodgers series that start on Wednesday or Thursday.
