Back in the faculty yard at break time, me and the remainder of the fellows liked to play Star Wars. This was after the ‘first’ trilogy – I am not that young. Though almost all of the good blokes needed to be redneck privateer Han Solo, or at a pinch, Luke Skywalker, I always wished to be lone wolf bounty killer, Boba Fett. I was not a bad boy – otherwise I would’ve been Darth Vader, I would have liked to be Boba Fett, and have a Boba Fett costume . In the early trilogy, we met Boba Fett on the bridge of an Imperial Star Destroyer.

Former Blue Angel and Bikeskills board member, LtCol Matt Shortal USMC, at work in the slot. Here’s a recent study that might surprise you about how what you eat can affect your concentration and performance. While we suspect it will generate a lot of controversy, it’s worth reading. Cmdr Craig Sorensen of the US NAVY’s VFC-13. Another Bikeskills board member, Craig is a senior instructor pilot at the NAVY’s Saint Adversary program.

Following up on a report I blogged about a couple of days back , Jacob Sullum uses the same methodology to prove that skydivers would be better off without parachutes : In Philadelphia, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania find, possessing a gun is strongly associated with getting shot. Since “guns did not protect those who possessed them,” they conclude, “people should rethink their possession of guns.” This is like noting that possessing a parachute is strongly associated with being injured while jumping from a plane, then concluding that skydivers would be better off unencumbered by safety equipment designed to slow their descent.

In the modern Hollywood culture of violence, sensational movies involving paranormal and new age themes, and depictions of spirit beings, angels, and demons that are theologically immature, perhaps we are loosing sight of the true transcendent nature of GOD who could wipe all creation, the entire cosmos in all of its physical and spiritual aspects, completely out of existence with an utterly effortless act of HIS ALMIGHTY WILL.

Last week at Target I took this photo of a not-at-all ironic America sign made with “vintage” license plates. As much as its very existence elicits a collective sigh from those of us who covet the original, let’s face it, in forty years its faux vintageness will for sure not be so faux, and we’ll be trying to figure out where to hang it in our living room. That’s just how it rolls.

Three Americans won the Nobel prize for Medicine the other day. (Cue U-S-A! U-S-A! chants). They recieved the award for discovering the existence and role an enzyme, telomerase, plays in repairing damaged DNA stands (actually something quite important for the future of medical treatments for genetic diseases and many cancers). Yet one of them, Elizabeth Blackburn, wasn’t good enough for our last President George Bush, because he fired her from the Federal government’s Council on Bioethics.

Recently Children’s Hospital Boston launched the first health and science blog from a pediatric hospital in the U.S. The blog is called Thrive. I love this blog because the Children’s Hospital medical staff answer parents’ questions on everything from “Is it OK to use cartoons to keep my baby busy while I clean the house?” to “Is there a cure for milk allergies?” Check out the blog, leave your comments and tell your friends.

Scamming people is one of the most immoral despicable acts of all. The Star is to be applauded for bringing the matter of “BLEEDING SCAM : LBA IS ‘JUNK SCIENCE” to the attention of the public. The MMA and other bodies which are supposed to ensure the public receives quality health care need to be proactive and not wait for public complaints indicating harm was done before acting. Those bodies need to require all purveyors of health-related products and services to prove that the products/services are safe, effective and necessary, BEFORE allowing those products/services to be offered to Malaysians.

In time to come – it may be sooner than we think – the obsession with wind power will likewise come to be seen as an even greater folly” Recently released, in The Wind Farm Scam , Dr. John Etherington argues that wind farm technology is a wholly counter-productive and undesirable response to the problems of climate change and electricity generation.

The early 1970s were full of conspiracy movies…I think I’ve talked about the Parallax View (1974) before, and there’s Three Days of the Condor (1975), and a lot of the science fiction of the time were in that category: Logan’s Run (1976), Soylent Green (1973). Here’s an article about some of them . And then, dropped down in the middle of them all, is a movie set in Washington in which two reporters fight against a massive conspiracy to rig an election and cover it up when things go wrong.
