I have to tell the truth, the last 2 nights I wanted to puke. How could we have given up George Sherrill. Bill Ripken said he believed Sherrill is the strength of the Dodgers bullpen, as George got the victory Thursday night. Then last night I had to watch Tex go deep to win the game. Will the Orioles ever be back? That’s enough baseball for tonight.

Today, Scott the Physical Therapist put Max in a special chair and took him outside to get some fresh air. We joined this nice couple, who were also enjoying some sunlight. They have been married for 61 years and she has been staying by his side for 12 hours every day. He had a massive stroke and has already spent weeks at a real hospital before being transferred to the illustrious facility above. As we breathed in the fresh air, Max and I were annoyed by the brazen squirrels who came much too close to us, even perching on my bench.

Yesterday we spent the day in LA to celebrate a Dodger victory– the perfect early birthday present for Moondoggie. It was a fun day and we met up with my in-laws for the game, too. On the way home we spent some time visiting my brother and his wife, drinking treats from Sonic and watching Jim and Pam get married. What a fun day! Stay tuned as next week I’m going to be sharing some more craftiness, and better yet, the story of the journey God’s had us on and where it has lead us to.

FRIDAY, 5:53pm: Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports writes that the Padres and Diamondbacks could work out a compensation package for Arizona VP of player personnel Jerry DiPoto. San Diego CEO Jeff Moorad has what he characterized as a “gentleman’s agreement” not to raid his former club for candidates, but Morosi says that the stipulation could be waived for the right price. Sadly, that won’t be today. My fifth attempt at such a post failed again. I’ll get it right one day. Because that failed, this post will be mediocre. First, B-Rock won the Nobel Peace Prize . I don’t want to side with conservatives or the Taliban , but I’m not sold on this. It’s not that he’s done nothing. It’s not that I think he won’t go on to do more. But I don’t think he’s done enough. And I don’t think someone can be rewarded because of their “vision” of the future.

I can’t believe the video of Matt Holliday’s insane error in his playoff game against the Dodgers. The St. Louis Cardinals were up 2-1 when the fly ball headed Holliday’s way, he evidently couldn’t see it and the ball hit him in the abdomen. After this a run scored to tie it, then later on another run scored to defeat the Cardinals and put them on the brink of playoff extinction. Holliday’s error came with two outs – he would have ended the game had he just made the easy catch.

Matt Holliday, left field for the Cardinals, could have used some help in mental performance and focus last night! The Cardinals were all but walking off the field at the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a lead in the battle for the National League Division Title. James Loney hit a pop fly directly to Matt Holliday, and he “lost it.” The pop fly soared high in the sky and right past Matt’s glove, into his belly. Matt buckled over in pain and embarrassment as the error turned into a double.

Just because it’s a 2:37 first pitch doesn’t mean you still cant have a good time. Oh, maybe you’ll have to take off from work, miss a day’s pay, and spend $100, or more, on a ticket. But you’ll still have fun. Lest we forget that last year, when the Phillies faced the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, the start time for the opening game was 3 p.m. Game 2, as it turned out, began at a much more manageable six o’clock. How is that possible? How can the Phillies/Brewers series, pitting two teams who had rarely sniffed the postseason prior to 2008, be given a 6 p.m.

I Tweeted for the first time yesterday, and boy, are my thumbs tired. Is that the right verb for, “tweeted”? Is it a past participle? Or is it “Twittered”. One of my kids and I went to the Angels-Boston game, and it was terrific fun. He’s a terrific ballplayer, my kid, and a complete lunatic for the Red Sox, so he wasn’t thrilled with the outcome (5-0, Angels) or with the funny, but unloving, things that were shouted by the Angels fans. There is, to say the least, no love lost between Boston and Anaheim.

James Loney was out. Or so we thought. The 9th inning was a complete nightmare and exposed the Cardinals shaky bullpen in just a few minutes. The task at hand just got significantly more difficult as the Cardinals fly east and attempt to extend the series to Sunday. I am realistic. The Cardinals chances of winning the series are slim. As a Rockies fan from day one I was over the moon in 2007 when the Rockies finally made it to the post-season with flair. “Rocktober” was coined that year. The whole nation learned who Tulowitski was and why the Denverites loved him so. I don’t know anyone that was anything more than simply disapionted that year when they lost-we were just happy to see them in the World Series. Fast forward to Spring 2009 and Rockies fans had all but forgotten.

One detail I neglected to mention in my Dodgers v. Cardinals Game 2 wrap-up was a post game comment by Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright. The Cy Young contender’s 8-inning, 3-hit gem left the Cards with a 2-1 lead heading into the 9th. A legendary Matt Holliday nutshot and questionable Ryan Franklin pitching squandered Wainwright’s stellar outing and caused the Cardinals’ Game 2 defeat. Unless you ask Wainwright. His reason for his team’s collapse? Towels. White and blue towels.

When I told my son that Obama had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize he at first thought I was joking. When I told him they really did he said, “Why? Did they have a spare one laying around?” Never has any Nobel Peace Prize winner done so little to deserve what used to be an honor. It is especially ridiculous given his utter lack of accomplishments as President ( as lampooned by this SNL skit .) As a sociological/psychological phenomena, the awarding of the prize is especially revealing given that the nomination deadline for this years prize was February 1st .

Total Pro Sports – That picture is not pretty, and it gives everyone in St. Louis a great scapegoat for what’s shaping up to be a very bad series for them, contrary to what many writers had predicted . But was it really Matt Holliday’s fault the Cardinals lost? If his play was an error, then what exactly do you call Colby Rasmus’s play in the 7th when he tried to stretch a double into a triple and got thrown out at 3rd? I call it a boneheaded play in a crucial situation during a 1-run game.

I’ve been to a lot of Dodger games, but this one was the best one ever. It didn’t start out so well. We were down 2-1 and the Cardinals brought in closer Ryan Franklin (who does not deserve #31) to earn the save. The first two batters he faced, Andre Ethier (who hit a homerun against Matt Wainright in the 4th) flyed out. Manny Ramirez flyed out too.Two outs. And then comes James Loney. He hits a simple fly ball to left center. Matt Holliday goes for the catch and drops it, making a big error and likely hurting more than his ego.

The Dodgers vs. the NY Yankees would really be an attention grabber. LA with Joe Torre, Don Mattingly and others going against Jeter, Pettitte, Posada and Rivera????? That would a matchup made in heaven or at Devil’s Den, you take your pick, but “Take me out to the Ballgame”, if these two clubs were to get together…… Some fans like the Red Sox, some say the Angels, not hearing too many saying the Twins, but the Yankees bring some mustard to the table.

Good to see Matt Holliday embracing the spirit of the 2009 Mets in yesterday’s game against the Dodgers. Of course, you had to feel for him- he also did homer in the game, and Ryan Franklin subsequently melted down completely, instead of bailing out Holliday. Still, this will reinforce the commonly-held perception that Holliday is a poor defender. This is not backed up by UZR, however- Holliday was at 3.2 runs above average per 150 games in 2009, 10.9 in 2009, 14.7 in 2007.

With Mark Loretta’s bloop single to center in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Los Angeles Dodgers took a 2-0 lead in the Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lost in the Dodgers’ improbable comeback that began with a Matt Holliday dropped fly ball with two outs in the inning was the fact that Joe Torre made a decision that most Managers, even the one across the field, would never have made.

Thank you, Matt Holliday. Thank you so very much for last night . Sure, it may sound like sour grapes to laugh at the misfortunes of the Cardinals. And it most certainly is. There will be Cardinals fans saying things like, “Well, at least our team MADE the playoffs!” And they can go fuck themselves. Because we could have said the same thing the last two years. And, I’m sorry, nothing that happened to us in the past two years was as big a nut punch as giving up a lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth because your “savior” of a left fielder got racked in the balls by a routine line out.

They say a picture says 1000 words, and this picture taken the split-second after Matt Holliday committed the error heard round the baseball world says more than I ever could. Yesterday, the Cardinals outfielder Roy Holliday chose a bad time to take a holiday as he misplayed what would have been the final out of the game and tie up the series 1-1. Instead, the ball hit him in his biscuits. I have seen it a million times in the playoffs; these things always end up biting you in your bootay. The Dodgers tied it up and then seconds after that won it in dramatic fashion to be up 2-0. My advice to the Dodgers; don’t count on this in St. Louis.

I have to confess that, when I first glanced at a copy of Lew Paper’s “ Perfect: Don Larsen’s Miraculous World Series Game and the Men Who Made It Happen ,” my first reaction was “I’m not sure if I’m going to like this…after all…what haven’t we heard about this game already?” But, I decided to read the book, nonetheless. And, now, I can share that I was very happy to make that call to give it a try. “ Perfect ” is a wonderful book.

Baseball fans saw Matt Holliday drop a routine fly ball that would have ended the game and given his Cardinals a victory over the Dodgers. Instead, the Dodgers rallied from one run down and two outs to load the bases and win the game. In a 162-game season, Holliday had committed only one error. Holliday is a great player. Which shows that anyone can screw up and at the worst time. In sports, a loss stings but isn’t fatal. For those piloting airplanes or trains, human error can become human tragedy.

You’re Matt Holliday. You sign with Oakland in the offseason, and don’t do as well as you did in Colorado, because 1) It’s not a hitter-friendly park and 2) It ain’t Coors Field or the National League. Then the Cardinals bring you over at the trade deadline, back to the NL, hitting behind Albert Pujols, and you absolutely tear it up from them, OPS’ing a ridiculous 1.023, with a slash line of .353/.419 /.604. Back due to popular demand (or not)…a second braindump on the baseball play-offs. Last night was a really good night’s baseball. I’ve experienced each game slightly differently, but enjoyed them all. Proper post-season baseball is well and truly here, and it’s so exciting I’m squealing like a little girl. Metaphorically squealing, anyway. Rockies beat Phillies, draw level in the series I caught live the ninth and final inning, seeing the Rockies beat the Phillies 5-4.

I went to espn a while ago and saw the headlines of the Dodger-St. Louis game-”Holliday’s error puts Cards in 2-0 hole”-the Foxsports website had practically the same headline. I didn’t get to see the game so I wanted to read the articles and see what happened. The media will make Holliday the goat in this game when its more a series of events that led to the loss. One thing that I see is the Cardinals had ten hits, one walk and left 7 men on base and only could score two runs. That contributed to the loss.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the Cardinals leading 2-1, Matt Holliday lost a sinking line drive in the lights, couldn’t track the ball, and instead of catching it, appeared to take it square in the nuts. Most reports are saying the ball hit Holliday in the stomach, but I think they are trying to avoid adding insult to injury, because if you watch the above video replay (with bonus Couples Retreat preview! You haven’t seen that before!), it’s pretty clear that the ball drilled him square in the junk.

Nursing a 2-1 lead with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals looked like they had Game 2 of the NLDS wrapped up, especially when Ryan Franklin got Dodgers first baseman James Loney to hit a routine line drive to left field. Then Matt Holliday forgot which way to turn his glove. Holliday muffed the line drive, which turned into a double and put the tying run in scoring position. Two walks and a Ronnie Belliard RBI single later and pinch-hitter Mark Loretta became a hero by driving in Casey Blake with a single up the middle.

Well, that was amazing! The Dodgers were down by a run in the bottom of 9th. They had nobody on base and there were 2 outs. And they came back to win it! Unbelievable. Most incredible Dodger postseason victory since Gibson in 1988. Here’s my favorite picture from the aftermath. Ok, ok, I know this isn’t a baseball blog. So, onto today’s puzzle.
