The second-chance pitcher shut down Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals, putting the Los Angeles Dodgers back in the National League championship series with a 5-1 victory on Saturday night. Andre Ethier missed the cycle by a single, Manny Ramirez [ stats ] had three hits and two RBIs and the Dodgers didn’t need help from another Cardinals fielding blunder to sweep their division series opponent for a second straight season.

Reporting from St. Louis - His name doesn’t have the resonance of Orel Hershiser or Fernando Valenzuela among Dodgers fans, but Vicente Padilla could have a certain ring to it following the command playoff performance he delivered tonight. Padilla held the Cardinals scoreless over seven sublime innings and Andre Ethier hit a two-run home run to propel the Dodgers to a 5-1 victory in Game 3 of the National League division series at Busch Stadium that completed a three-game sweep.

The Dodgers’ champagne didn’t have to travel to any extra cities this time. Vicente Padilla pitched a great game and the Dodgers swept away the Cardinals in St. Louis this afternoon. Andre Ethier smacked another home run, a two-run shot in the 4th inning. It was Padilla’s first post-season start, but he didn’t show much nervousness: no runs, 4 hits and a walk in 7 innings, his longest stint as a Dodger. Next up, likely on Friday at Dodger Stadium, will be the winner of the Phillies-Rockies series; their game in Denver today was postponed by cold weather.

On an increasingly bleak night at Busch Stadium. destined Hall of Famer John Smoltz gave the crowd a treat by striking out the first five Dodgers he faced in the sixth and seventh.Since Smoltz could retire or depart as a free agent after this season, Cards fans needed to relish this relief appearance. Their ovation indicated that they did just that.Smoltz’s strong relief outing, on the heels of Dennys Reyes’ shutout inning, kept the Cards in this game.But they are still down 4-0.

I had a ticket to spot 7 of the standing room section behind Section 229. The view was fine, the crowd was electric and the game was, simply put, one of the best games — if not the best — I’ve seen live. I missed but one play, and apparently it was a controversial one. Leading off the 11th inning, Joe Mauer lofty a Damaso Marte offering down the left field. From where I was standing, the ball kept slicing and slicing and then…it and Melky Cabrera disappeared from view.

The Dodgers continued their charge in the fourth inning, with Rafael Furcal’s two-out RBI single past Cards third baseman Mark DeRosa.Former Cardinal Ronnie Belliard scored that run, continuing his torment or his old team. He led off the inning with a single into left field and moved over on Russell Martin’s groundout.Joel Pineiro got Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla to ground out, but then Furcal came through with his clutch hit and the Dodgers had a 4-0 lead.Reliever Dennys Reyes replaced the unfortunate Pineiro to start the fifth inning.

Joel Pineiro was about to get out of the third inning unscathed.There were two out and a runner at first base. Andre Ethier was batting for the Dodgers and Pineiro had owned him in his career, getting him out all seven times he faced him in regular season play.But Pineiro left a 3-1 pitch up in the zone and Ethier crushed it for a two-run homer and a 3-0 LA lead.Manny Ramirez followed with another double, then James Loney reached when Pineiro botched a throw from Albert Pujols while covering first base.

Ryan Ludwick did his job in the No. 2 hole, driving a one-out single into right field to give Albert Pujols a baserunner.And Albert dumped a single into right field, putting runners at first and second base and giving Matt Holliday an early opportunity at redemption.Holliday didn’t deliver — although his little chopper in front of the plate allowed Ludwick and Pujols to move up a base.This put rookie Colby Rasmus. After Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal led off the game with out a routine fly ball to center, Matt Kemp fouled off a tough 2-2 pitch and then reached on an infield grounder. He hit a slow grounder to short and beat Brendan Ryan’s throw to first base.When Andre Ethier lined out to left, we detected some derisive cheering when Matt Holliday handled the ball without incident.

Update | 7:11 p.m. This game could not have unfolded any better for the Dodgers – or worse for the Cardinals. Padilla has retired 10 of his last 11 batters, including two straight after Colby Rasmus’s one-out double in the fourth. At 55 pitches, Padilla could easily go another two or three before the Dodgers’ stellar bullpen would take over. He will outlast Pineiro, who will not come out to pitch the fifth. Pineiro gave up seven hits and four runs – all with two outs – as the Cardinals trail, 4-0.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim held the Boston Red Sox to one run on Friday night, winning 4-1 in Anaheim. The Angels now have a 2-0 lead over the Red Sox in the best-of-five series. The teams meet in Boston on Sunday. Earlier Friday, the New York Yankees tied the Minnesota Twins in the bottom of the ninth and went on to win, 4-3, in 11 innings. October10 Carl Pavano met the media this morning at the Metrodome and delivered a mostly uninteresting press conference ahead of his Game 3 start tomorrow night. When asked to reflect on his time in New York, Pavano said, “I mean, it’s tough. I mean, you know, it’s definitely a black period in my career, four years where I was kind of just treading water for awhile there, but obviously, with the way this year has gone, I have been able to go out there, and sustained health, go out there and be successful and get through the year and how everything has come full circle.”Pavano also mentioned how good the chemistry is between him and his Twins teammates, a comment which made me laugh.

The Dodgers go for a sweep of the Cardinals as Vicente Padilla takes on Joel Pineiro. Padilla proved to be a good pick up for Los Angeles, as he went 4-0 with a 3.20 ERA in eight appearance down the stretch for the Dodgers. The difference between his Dodgers stats and Rangers stats is striking. With Texas he struck out a barely useful 4.9 per nine innings, while walking 3.5 per nine IP. When he moved to the Dodgers, his strikeouts soared to 8.7 per 9 IP and his walks dropped to 2.7 per 9 IP.

Avoiding Albert Pujols seems to be working for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are one win away from a first-round playoff sweep of the St Louis Cardinals. So it’s no secret I’m a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan. That game on Thursday just crushed me. The series should be tied up 1-1 but instead the Redbirds backs are against the wall down 0-2. Even worse was, I bet on the St. Louis Cardinals that game. OUCH. Double the hurt. So from here on out I am betting on the LA Dodgers. Why? Cause I win either way. If they Cardinals win – I’m happy. If the Dodgers win – I make $$$. I will gladly pay 3 games in a row for the Cardinals to not be eliminated.

It seems like only a minority of SoSG readers can appreciate this, but I couldn’t share the joy of being at Thursday’s incredible come-from-behind 3-2 victory at the Stadium . I was apparently the only guy in LA that had to work. And “watching” this game via mlb.com’s gameday was incredibly painful. What served as a reasonable substitute for television over six months this year, became a woefully insufficient medium to capture the majesty and emotion of this game.

Before we get into some numbers … my goodness do I hate the Yankees. Sure, I’d made the usual jokes about how my answer to the question of a Phillies-Yankees World Series would be to root for plague. But seeing them tonight before the baying hordes in Leni Riefenstahl Park, all the jokes fell away. I would be rooting hard for the Phillies. Of course I would be. Not because Pedro might be there, or because I don’t despise the Phillies with the proper intensity , or because it’s the National League, but because the Phillies, for all their Victorinoness and their own horrid fans, are Not the Yankees.

The Phillies/Rockies game is scheduled to start at 7:37 MDT, 3 1/2 hours after the Dodgers/Cardinals game. However, the weather forecast is for cold , as Denver experiences near record lows for the game. Flipping the two games and moving the start times back an hour gives them a lower wind chill in Denver and decent weather in St. Louis . I don’t think it’s too late to make the change and alert the teams and the fans.

Through the first two days of the league division series, TBS’s average viewership of 4.52 million a game is up 15 percent from the comparable period last year. It was the best two-day start for the division series since 2005.During Wednesday’s tripleheader of series openers, the Twins-Yankees game drew 6.6 million viewers, up 23 percent from the game in the same time slot in 2008, followed by 4.97 million for the Cardinals-Dodgers game (up 12 percent), and 2.76 million for the Rockies-Phillies game (even with last year).
