Sen Barbara Boxer’s Legislative Record Packs Very Little Punch There aren’t many competitions where you can lose 99 percent of the time and still be considered a leading contender, but somehow Barbara Boxer is pulling it off. A recent Field Poll has her with a 14-point lead over her closest Republican rival. However, her colleagues in Washington have seen fit to only enact three of the nearly 400 bills the three-term senator has sponsored since she was elected in 1992, raising questions of why the popular liberal icon—who set a record for the most votes received in a California election—has failed so spectacularly to land any punches.

From an email: Many of us witnessed the arrogance of Barbara Boxer on June18, 2009 as she admonished Brigadier General Michael Walsh because he addressed her as “ma’am” and not “Senator” before a Senate hearing. This letter is from a National Guard aviator and Captain for Alaska Airlines named Jim Hill. I wonder what he would have said if he were really angry.

Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidency – and especially his relationship with his conservative followers and voters – has been seriously undermined by the “sexual tourism” scandal which has engulfed his Culture Minister, according to centre-right politicians. Parliamentarians in the President’s own party suggest that the “Frédéric Mitterrand affair” – whatever its rights and wrongs – has alienated the older, traditionalist voters who turned out for Mr Sarkozy in 2007 after he promised to roll back the influence of a “left-liberal, post-1968″, cultural elite.

Barack Obama’s peace prize starts a fight International reaction ranged from delight to disbelief. The former winners Kofi Annan and Desmond Tutu voiced praise, the latter lauding the Nobel Committee’s “surprising but imaginative choice”. But Lech Walesa, the dissident turned Polish President, who won the Peace Prize in 1983, spoke for many, declaring: “So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far.” Mr Obama’s domestic critics leapt on the award as evidence of foreigners fawning over an untested “celebrity” leader.

The country’s antiquated campaign finance laws, through which the judicial fallacy of ” corporate personhood ” puts– quite purposefully– the outcome of our elections in the hands of the wealthy and powerful instead of the people, are truly at the root of America’s problems. The orgy of campaign donations from Wall Street has left the banking industry virtually unscathed from– and unchanged in the midst of– the economic and financial mayhem they have caused the nation.

by Burt Prelutsky Unlike most conservatives, when I first heard about cash for clunkers, I got very excited. But then I found out that it involved people turning in their used cars. Just imagine getting $4,500 for dropping off, say, Henry Waxman at a junkyard where, together with fellow California jalopies like Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, they could be crushed and shipped off to China. You would have to agree that would be a pretty good deal even if no money changed hands.
