[Guest post by DRJ] Sen. Jim DeMint traveled to Honduras last week and reports Hondurans want to move past the Zelaya story: “Indeed, the desire to move beyond the Zelaya era was almost universal in our meetings. Almost. In a day packed with meetings, we met only one person in Honduras who opposed Mr. Zelaya’s ouster, who wishes his return, and who mystifyingly rejects the legitimacy of the November elections: U.S. Ambassador Hugo Llorens. Maturity isn’t the Obama administration’s strong suit. Neither is class. Fox News reports: In a clear dig at former President George W. Bush, a State Department spokesman compared President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize to the flying footwear his predecessor faced in Iraq. “From our standpoint, you know, we think that this gives us a sense of momentum … when the United States has accolades tossed its way, rather than shoes,” State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters on Friday.

Senator Jim DeMint travelled to Honduras last week, much to the chagrin of Democrats. His op-ed in The Wall Street Journal slams President Obama’s Honduras policy, which is indefensible. As all strong democracies do after cleansing themselves of usurpers, Honduras has moved on. The presidential election is on schedule for Nov. 29. Under Honduras’s one-term-limit, Mr. Zelaya could not have sought re-election anyway. Current President Roberto Micheletti—who was installed after Mr.

As contemptible and pitiful as Mark Sanford is, he might be replaced by somebody even worse. This article is about the Far Right’s mass pantytwist over Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize. As you’d expect, it’s the usual spewing of a bunch of dunces who couldn’t find their way out of a one-room apartment. But in a sea of knuckledragging inbreds, one particular mutant stands head and shoulders above the rest. South Carolina Rep. Gresham Barrett wants to be the next governor.

HOW SHOULD HONDURAS woo the Obama administration…
10/10/2009
An eleven page legal analysis provided to Congress concludes as follows: V. Was the removal of Honduran President Zelaya legal, in accordance with Honduran constitutional and statutory law? Available sources indicate that the judicial and legislative branches applied constitutional and statutory law in the case against President Zelaya in a manner that was judged by the Honduran authorities from both branches of the government to be in accordance with the Honduran legal system.

by Julian Ku Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina  weighs in today with a WSJ oped blasting the Obama Administration’s policy toward Honduras. Putting aside the merits of DeMint’s analysis for the time being, I found his oped interesting for two reasons: one having to do with DeMint’s somewhat sketchy actions, and the other with Harold Koh’s potentially sketchy legal advice. 1) “One Voice”? DeMint is openly, brazenly challenging the correctness of U.S. foreign policy toward Honduras.

All of the normal stakeholders in Honduras back the elections, and Honduras is bringing international monitors as it usually does to verify the reliability of the vote. If the Obama administration truly backed the concept of self-determination, then these elections would be the rational solution to the problem that Barack Obama has mostly created.”Full Story Here

Earlier this month, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) attempted to block government funding for Sen. Jim DeMint’s (R-SC) trip to Honduras as retribution for DeMint’s obstruction of two of Obama’s diplomatic nominations, including Thomas A. Shannon Jr., the nominee to be ambassador to Brazil. But DeMint’s hold is being criticized by a major Republican. At Harvard on Thursday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich decried the lack of an ambassador to Brazil: “If you want to live in the most productive, creative, and prosperous nation in the world, what is it you have to do?” Gingrich asked.

WSJ In the last three months, much has been made of a supposed military “coup” that whisked former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya from power and the supposed chaos it has created. While the White House and the State Department continue to insist that Honduras removed its president Manuel Zelaya in a coup, Senator Jim DeMint decided to do something rather basic — ask the Hondurans what happened.  John Kerry attempted to stop DeMint from traveling to Honduras in a bald extortion attempt to get DeMint to lift holds on two Obama administration diplomatic nominees, which DeMint ignored.  DeMint writes in today’s Wall Street Journal that Zelaya needed to go, and that the US has

James Kirchik, writing in a recent issue of The New Republic , ponders the Administration continued insistence that there was a “coup” in Honduras.  He concludes: In the immediate wake of Honduras’s constitutional crisis, it was understandable that the administration, caught by surprise, might jump the gun in its denunciation of the military action as a “coup.” Now, three months later and with legal repudiation from within its own government, U.S. policy has become a mistake in search of a rationale.

US President Barack Obama basked in new-found glory Saturday, vowing to consider his surprise Nobel Peace Prize as “a call for action” to address the challenges of the new century. But critics argued the award may have been premature and even embarrassing. A visibly surprised Obama, 48, said Friday he did not feel fit to join the honor roll of revered Nobel peace laureates, but vowed to use the prize as a “call to action” to lead the world in confronting its deepest challenges.

While the United States has recovered much of its former prestige it lost under the previous (mal)administration since the election of Barack Obama,  there’s a sense in the Latin American blogosphero and media that a Nobel Peace Prize, simply for not being for not being a completely dirt-bag is a bit much. Obama is a man who has yet to shut down a global gulag, who has yet to end the warring in Iraq, who has yet to oversee the return of the elected president of Haiti (deposed by US, Canadian, and French forces), who stands unflinching on the coup d’etat in Honduras, who runs cover for Israeli massacres of Palestinians and Israeli violations of the Geneva Conventions (i.e., supporting war crimes), who seeks to proliferate military bases in Columbia, who has ramped up the killing in Afghanistan, and who has overseen the spillover of war into Pakistan.

Even liberal Peter Beinert is flabbergasted that the Yasser Arafat Peace Prize went to a man who has actually accomplished nothing. I like Barack Obama as much as the next liberal, but this is a farce. He’s done nothing to deserve the prize. Sure, he’s given some lovely speeches and launched some initiatives—on Iran, Israeli-Palestinian peace, climate change and nuclear disarmament—that might, if he’s really lucky and really good, make the world a more safe, more just, more peaceful world.
10/09/2009
Seriously. He won the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Prize committee says they bestowed this honor on him because he has spread hope around the world. That’s all the justification the committee has to offer. He has given the world hope. Never mind the fact that he hasn’t accomplished anything that has caused peace to break out. In fact, he has contributed to more strife and ill will in the world. When the Iranian regime brutally slaughtered Iranian citizens in the streets as they protested the obviously rigged election, President Obama offered them no support what so ever.
10/09/2009
Gee, you’d think a U.S. president who won the Nobel Peace Prize might get rave reviews from his party’s activists and polite congrats from top Republicans. But news of Barack Obama’s award Friday drew a rebuke from the Republican Party chairman, ridicule from conservative bloggers, and even gripes from some liberals who think he hasn’t done enough to wind down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Top Democrats congratulated Obama, of course, but critics abounded on the left and right.

When I was a young man, I rooted against America in the Olympics because I thought Reagan and Bush were evil. The scourge of crack cocaine made me sick. Iran-Contra disgusted me. Same thing as Supreme Court nominee Clarence, with his Tom ass. The Empire seemed undeniably evil, even through Clinton. Then, around age 30, kids came and I kinda got over lusting for Babylon’s fall. Barack Obama’s election 11 months ago extinguished my desire to see an end to the United States.

I took most of today off as part of a long weekend, so I have paid less attention than I might otherwise have to the conservative outrage over the Nobel Committee’s decision to award President Obama the 2009 peace prize. None of it is surprising. For a very long time on the right, “international” has been a synonym for “weak,” or for “anti-American.” And at least since former President Jimmy Carter won the peace prize in 2002, it has been seen as a way for shadowy European elites to bash the United States.

This is a few hundred times worse than giving it to Kissenger… unless… unless… they realize about why Obama is excusing crimes against humanity and furthering them, pulling off a coup in Honduras seamlessly, bombing innocents with drones, making warlike against Iran… are encouraging him to fight the killers who have him running so scared…. Oh! I wish I’d never gotten out of bed this morning. Holy crap. This is appalling .

Obama wins Nobel “Peace” Prize, gives imperialism a facelift for the 21st Century (monkeysmashesheaven.wordpress.com) Today, Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Given his cult of personality and his stature in the so-called “international community,” it is not a big surprise that Obama has won. After all, the Prize has a long history of being awarded to war mongers, racists, imperialists, and frauds.

Jesus Healing Ten Lepers by Wierix (1596) In the 17th Chapter of the Gospel of Luke, Luke relates the story of Jesus healing ten lepers. They all — ecstatic at their good fortune — run off to the Temple to be declared clean by the priests and thus redeemed back into society. One of the ten turns back and goes to thank Jesus for healing him. Here’s the relevant part: 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him.

They apparently will award the prize to anyone who demonstrates that they’re not George Bush (Especially as they apparently decided on Obama significantly earlier in his presidency!) – even though he freed millions of Muslims ( especially women !) from tyranny, implemented some of the most successful aid programs to Africa and for fighting AIDS ever…I’m not saying George Bush deserves the prize, but at least he did something that could justify it. Multiple times. As did quite a few others .

Every year the prestige of the Nobel Peace Prize diminishes. Eventually(which should be the case now) notification of recipients will be on an obscured portion of the newspaper. Well, isn’t it a good thing they gave him the Nobel Prize BEFORE he’s indicted for TREASON??? The main question one has to ask…What on earth was he awarded for? He has undeniably accomplished nothing in his first year of his administration, even though he has a Democrat controlled Congress.

Apparently, SNL’s skit was premature. Maybe President Obama hasn’t actually accomplished the following: 1. Closing Gitmo ( same as Bush ) 2 Outlawing torture by revoking Bush’s EO that said much the same thing 3. Withdrawal from Iraq (thanks to Bush) 4. De-escalation of war in Afghanistan (campaigned that it was the necessary war and now dithers as more American soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan this year, than in the previous 7 years) 5. peace between Israel and Palestine 6.

In the eyes of the world, America’s back. Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday morning by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” The Nobel committee recognized Obama’s efforts to solve complex global problems including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons. Below is another insane, stream-of-conciousness press briefing given by State Dept. spokesman, Ian Kelly.  The last question of the day is the one that could have been posed back in early July to the Obama (just got a Nobel Peace Prize) administration.  After a collective review of Ian Kelly’s press briefings, I think he should get a prize of some kind for pretending to be an idiot in order to cover the most consistent lying about Honduras within this administration.

Obama awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize . This is full of money quotes. Bear in mind that the guy had only been in office for a week when the nominations were done. [Chairman of the Nobel committee Thorbjorn] Jagland said he hoped the prize would help Obama resolve the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Let’s see, El Presidente who has done nothing while in office gets the prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.” Hmm, let’s see, translated this means, he gets this for being an apologist, appeaser, for being weak, and for going after Israel no doubt .

Lanny Davis is often the unofficial floater of ideas to get the Democrats out of silly jams. He floated earlier in the year a card-check “lite” plan. It went nowhere, but the signal was clear — the White House wasn’t going to the mat to repeal the secret ballot in union elections. Well, he’s at it again, this time on Honduras .

The New York Times describes the gargantuan withdrawal from Iraq but the Telegraph reports that the Cavalry won’t be riding to the rescue in Afghanistan. The NYT writes about a pullout so vast it staggers in the imagination. JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq — There is no more visible sign that America is putting the Iraq war behind it than the colossal operation to get its stuff out: 20,000 soldiers, nearly a sixth of the force here, assigned to a logistical effort aimed at dismantling some 300 bases and shipping out 1.5 million pieces of equipment, from tanks to coffee makers.

Counting Coups by digby So today the famous Floyd Brown , (now of World Net Daily ) makes the first call for Obama’s impeachment . I wonder what took him so long? And last week we had a Newsmax columnist calling for a military coup. Newsmax took it down after being called on it, but it turns out that this wasn’t a one-off outlier. Jonathan Schwarz noted in an email to me that there has been quite a bit of this at the teabagger rallies: It puts this in a whole different light, doesn’t it? Six House members on Friday sent a letter to the president of the Honduran Congress warning that the Sen.

We have had the epitome of a baby boomer president in office for less than nine months. During this period, we have watched the supposed leader of the free world apologize to anyone who will listen for just about anything and ignoring the good we do. We have watched him betray freedom loving people across the planet: – Israel is the only truly functioning democracy in the Middle East, yet Obama and his naive sycophants totally ignore the atrocities committed by the Palestinians and demand that Israel stop protecting itself and refrain from providing housing for its people.

It’s a slow news week for the Dynamo so I’m piecing together some stuff. The inaugural Charities Cup match versus Mexico’s Monterrey is this weekend. Is anyone going? I wonder how many starters will see action for this one. Probably not many considering Holden, Rico, and Ching will be in Honduras with the national team. So look for it to be another matchup featuring the Orange Abyss. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the upcoming match against the LA Galaxy marks the first time the Dynamo will face David Beckham.

Am Law Daily described the jump as follows : “Lanny Davis, a longtime Washington, D.C., lawyer who supported Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid and was a fraternity brother of George W. Bush, is taking his unique practice from Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe to McDermott, Will & Emery.” It’s not the case, however, that the entire practice moved.

* From Forbes, a look at the massive escalation in Community Reinvestment Act-driven lending that led up to the Fall 2008 credit crisis . As is true of the Great Depression, there will probably never be a consensus on the causes of the credit crisis, or at least on what weight to assign to the many various contributing causes. I’m skeptical of any effort to boil it down to just one culprit. But the Left has its work cut out for it in trying to deny that the visible foot of government meddling played a number of significant roles – including the GSEs, the CRA and the Fed’s monetary policies.

By Ramzy Baroud Latin America stands at the threshold of a new era: one that promises a return to political uncertainty, violence and chaos or one of political stability and economic prosperity. Honduras is a crucial indicator. The possible outcomes of the Honduran crisis are likely to define the coming era for Latin America and the US future role in that hemisphere, and, in fact, beyond it. Indeed, the story is much more elaborate than a daring president holed up in a foreign embassy in his own country.

“Dialogue” has begun. Apparently each sentence of “dialogue” ends in “Sign the San Jose accord of else” so I’m not sure I’d call it dialogue. Here though is a VERY helpful speech for Obama to give when he finally decides to apologize for this huge mistake he’s made about Honduras. ( ht the indispensable LaGringa ) Here’s the opener. “On behalf of the President of the United States and myself, I apologize for having jumped to the conclusion that events in Honduras last week constituted a military coup.

Read the latest on the “outrage” from countries over the deposing of that commie rat-bastard Zelaya from Honduras? Honduras’ coup-installed leader resisted calls by diplomats from across the hemisphere to reinstate ousted President Manuel Zelaya, at one point angrily telling the visitors they “don’t know the truth or don’t want to know it.” During sometimes confrontational talks with interim President Roberto Micheletti and his ministers, representatives from the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean took turns on Wednesday urging the Micheletti camp to reconsider its position, but no breakthroughs were announced.

First, depose a president. Second, hire a lobbyist.   In the months since soldiers ousted the Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya , the de facto government and its supporters have resisted demands from the United States that he be restored to power. Arguing that the left-leaning Mr. Zelaya posed a threat to their country’s fragile democracy by trying to extend his time in office illegally, they have made their case in Washington in the customary way: by starting a high-profile lobbying campaign.

Variation on a Burke-ism: Evil triumphs when bad men impede good men from doing good. Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary(1905-1916) made that famous statement about the ‘lights going out in Europe’, prior to the start of World War I. Needless to say, we know the consequences of World War I were felt throughout the 20th Century. After reading the following article, I can’t help but think we may be experiencing something similar in the next four years under the Presidency of Barack Obama.

As if the right needed to add to its anti-democratic pedigree, Republican leaders have flocked to Tegucigalpa to bolster the junta in Honduras. Nine Congressional Republicans – including seven in the past week as the crisis heats up — have now met with Roberto Micheletti, who took power after a military coup June 28. This is a coup that has been denounced by everyone from the Organization of American States to the United Nations, which passed a resolution calling “categorically on all states to recognise no government other than that” of the elected president, Manuel Zelaya.

Well it must be said that I have been too silent for too long. I cannot quietly continue to ignore the preening socialism and outright fascism that is emanating from Washington D.C. There needs to be more voices for the people and less of the preening idiocy that enveloped so many on the right. Where are the people in the GOP that are willing to say NO MORE? It is time to stand against the current tide and speak up. I must say that I am completely floored by the outright embrace of tyranny by the left in this country.

Obama rules out troop reduction Top story: At a bipartisan meeting with congressional leaders on Tuesday, President Barack Obama indicated that he has ruled out substantial troop reductions in Afghanistan but remains undecided on Gen. Stanley McChyrstal’s request for 40,000 more troops.  A senior aide said the president was looking to “dispense with the straw man argument that this is about either doubling down or leaving Afghanistan,” but with congress divided on Afghan strategy , the president may not have much time for deliberation.

9 September, 2009 — Z MagazineFrom a talk given in Caracas, Venezuela on August 29 (updated September 9)The last time I had the opportunity to speak in Caracas — at long-distance that time — was about a year ago, right after the UNASUR (Union of South American Nations) meeting in Santiago in September 2008. That meeting was called “with the purpose of considering the situation in the Republic of Bolivia,” after an uprising backed by the traditional elites who had lost power in the impressive democratic elections of 2005.

In my June 29th post titled “Obama and Clinton Clueless On Honduras” I exposed just how false President Obama’s repeated statements were on the illegality of the constitutional removal of wannabe tyrant Manuel Zelaya by the Honduran Supreme Court and Congress. While it came as no surprise to many that President Obama would pander to Hugo Chavez, Daniel Ortega and Cuba’s Castro brothers, Obama just couldn’t pass up an opportunity to side with socialists tyrants against Central America’s burgeoning democracies.

Amanda Terkel gives in ThinkProgress yet another example of why Republicans cannot be taken seriously : Every single Republican in the House voted against the $819 billion Recovery Act in January. Among the Republican senators who voted against the stimulus were Texas’ Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn. Both of them complained that they wanted to see more tax cuts rather than government spending. But now, both Hutchison and Cornyn are pressuring the Obama administration to give Texas $3 billion in stimulus funds .
