Obama gets the Nobel – human rights movement gets the boot . by Stephen Diamond on October 9, 2009 Norwegians must not be reading the papers these days. Consider Obama’s recent record: 1) Sending Valerie Jarrett to Dharamsala to tell the fellow Nobel Prize winner Dalai Lama that he was not welcome in Washington D.C. until after the visit of Obama to Beijing later this month. To the Dalai Lama’s credit he came anyway .

Wait, it’s not a hoax? Are they serious? Early Friday morning, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that Barack Obama would receive a consolation prize for losing out on the 2016 Olympics — namely the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Here in our humble editorial shop, our first reaction was, naturally, to spew coffee on our keyboards. Our second reaction was to wonder, For what? There’s been no signing of peace treaties, no ending of wars, no stopping of nuclear proliferation.

When a courageous speaker of truth emerges from the forest of lies that is modern media, the risk is ever present that censorship, suppression, or worse could occur. Sadly, that is the case today . Glenn Beck produced an episode of his program that continued his valiant search for communists burrowing into the woodwork of America like subversive termites eating away at the foundation of our national home. However, this episode has mysteriously disappeared.

WASHINGTON — Tibet’s spiritual leader said Thursday he accepted President Barack Obama’s decision to avoid the Dalai Lama on a visit here, insisting he did not want to cause problems by upsetting China. The Dalai Lama — who fled Chinese rule in Tibet more than 50 years ago — is paying a weeklong visit to Washington, his first in 18 years that will not include a meeting with the president. “I do not want to create any inconvenience to anybody,” the Dalai Lama told CNN.

This picture shows Barack Obama and Valerie Jarrett at Manny’s Coffee House in Chicago in November 2008, a week or so after his victory. Jarrett is one of his most trusted advisers and friends, someone who helped him to get his start in Chicago politics and who always tells it to him straight. Michelle Obama says she is like a  big sister. I do not know what it is about this picture that gets to me. It has to do with the utter ordinariness of it – ordering lunch. It also has to do with Jarrett somehow.

Dharamsala: The decision of US President Obama to meet Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama after Obama’’s China visit has raised hopes amongst the Tibetan exiles living in India. Obama will not be meeting the Dalai Lama during his five-day trip to the US capital. This is the first time in 18 years the exiled Tibetan leader has visited Washington without seeing the President. Obama will wait until after his November summit with Chinese leader Hu Jintao before meeting the Dalai Lama, a decision that has made the Tibetan exiles hopeful of US help in resolving the Tibet issue with China.

Dalai Drama How much should we read into Obama’s choice not to meet with the Dalai Lama? Michelle Goldberg The American Prospect, October 6, 2009 Tibet sometimes seems like a case study in the futility of peaceful resistance. It has been occupied by the Chinese since 1949, two years after the creation of Israel led to the dispossession of the Palestinians. Unlike the Palestinians, the Tibetans have rarely resorted to violence or made common cause with terrorists of the far right or far left.

In “Damage Control,” at my Chicago-area (Oak Park) journalist friend, Jim Bowman’s blog, Blithe Spirit, Jim writes of the White House’s bungled exercise in impression management, following the failure in Copenhagen of the John Doe calling himself “Barack Obama,” accompanied by Madame Michelle, billionaire Oprah Winfrey, and Chicago slumlord/presidential consigliere Valerie Jarrett, to secure the 2016 Olympics for their home base.Bowman: “LA Times has a story that makes the seasoned observer wonder if the White House isn’t throwing the Chicago Olympic Committee under the bus.“The intelligence that we had from the U.S.

NANNY STATES NANNY DUELS THE WINNER LOSES LIBERTY, FREEDOM Many of you no doubt read of the Brit’s attempt to humiliate and criminalize a police woman who exchanged baby sitting services with a close friend. They had given birth about the same time and the arrangement suited both their schedules. This enraged authorities. As reported in The Daily Mail : “A policewoman told last night how she was banned from looking after her colleague’s daughter because she was not a registered childminder.

Kal Penn, Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, White House Office of Olympic Sport, and future U.S. bobsled brakeman. This is the bureaucratic equivalent of tripping, catching yourself, and then jogging it out, as if to say, “Yeah, I totally made a conscious decision to make an abrupt and awkward change in tempo during my walk across the office. Don’t mind me.” Despite the embarrassing rejection of his effort to lure the 2016 Olympic Games to his hometown of Chicago, President Barack Obama will keep the first-ever White House Olympic Office, POLITICO has learned.
