Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai yesterday said the resignation of an Afghan member of the UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission “cast serious doubt” on its work. Mustafa Barakzai, a Supreme Court Judge who was one of two Afghans on the Commission, resigned on Monday claiming foreigners were “interfering” in its work and that Afghans had little input in its decisions. Supporters of Abdullah Abdullah, Mr Karzai’s nearest rival in the August election, claimed that Mr Karzai was behind Mr Barakzai’s sudden resignation.

Reporting the score as it stands a halftime is fine sports journalism. But it isn’t big news, just a progress report. The real news is who won, and how they did it. So the big news story of Tuesday, October 13, was a halftime report : After months of relentless courting and suspense, Senator Olympia J. Snowe, Republican of Maine, cast her vote with Democrats on Tuesday as the Senate Finance Committee approved legislation to remake the health care system and provide coverage to millions of the uninsured.

Reported by Ellen - October 14, 2009 - Discredited author and birther Jerome Corsi got a double segment on Hannity last night (10/13/09) to spin unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about President Obama and his “One World” policies. Although Corsi’s inflammatory and almost apocalyptic theories included accusations that Obama and his like-minded cronies are “post-American” and out to destroy the dollar and U.S. sovereignty, Sean Hannity never challenged Corsi to back up any of his claims.

This blog - ever since late summer 2006, when I started mouthing off over the electronical Internets - has been about three things: My family. Whatever amuses and entertains me. And geopolitics. The sixth post ever - and I’m inching towards 900 now - was called ” Saturday morning 4am ” and was about the utter fucked-up-ness of a Western democracy trying to make a Western democracy out of the Ottoman dogs-dinner that was and is Iraq.

We are still trying to figure out why the Nobel Committee gave Barack Obama its annual Peace Prize. As far as it appears, the award was based on the fact that the U. S. President is a good-natured fellow who people seem to like –and who isn’t George W. Bush. In fact, committee chairman Thorbjoen Jagland didn’t really try to pretend otherwise. Consider the committee’s stated reasons, along with Mr. Jagland’s comments when reporters pressed him to justify Mr.

www.nst.com.my October 14, 2009 Peace Prize a self-fulfilling prophecy? by W.Scott Thompson* When the news of Barack Obama’s Nobel Prize came through, I was trying to decide… Well, what can we say? When you think about it, is there anyone more deserving? Obama himself said he wondered how he could be in the company of such transformative leaders, but that is self-answering, because he already has transformed not just America’s ability to foster peace in the world, but the whole international climate of cooperative endeavour.

I t was well into the time of the great dissolution. Imperial rot always begins in the core but manifests itself along the external edges. America’s time is no different. Every narrative of Fall has an arc. There are different scripts. Some end with a retrospectively imposed tangible event. Regardless of what really happened. Rome is a case in point. It ‘fell’. Other stories end with a sigh. A now-irrelevant-but-once-shared-Idea gone. That’s how we suspect America’s imperial story concludes.

In the past few weeks, as President Barack Obama closes in on a decision about sending more troops to Afghanistan, a couple of alluring ideas have resurfaced in Washington. The first is that talks with the Taliban, or with members of the fundamentalist Islamist movement, might be worth pursuing more agressively, to advance the day that U.S. troops could begin to leave. This afternoon I watched the half hour preview of PBS Frontline’s ‘Obama’s War’ and it was riveting.  The small portion shown focuses on a group of Marines attempting to protect a village of civilians in Helmand Province.  Their amazing efforts are awe inspiring to me.  My only problem with PBS’s job is the name.  The war in Afghanistan is not just ‘Obama’s’, it is ‘our’ war.  The United States will win or lose the war.  If one wants to designate the war to anyone specific, it would be these marines doing the fighting, peacemaking, and dying.

I wish he was wrong. As personalities, the syntax-mangling Ike and the self-consciously intellectual David Petraeus don’t have much in common. But politically, they’re in a parallel position. Today’s GOP has a right-wing base that can damage Obama, but none of its favorites have a prayer of winning the White House. The reason is that just like the Republican right of the early 1950s, which kept insisting that the New Deal constituted socialism (or fascism), today’s conservative activists have not accommodated themselves to some basic shifts in public mood.

“As President Obama considers what to do about Afghanistan, it is important that he hear perspectives from all sides concerned about that critical region. In Riyadh, it is clear that the Taliban are not becoming more popular in Afghanistan, as some have claimed. … Nor are the Taliban a cohesive or uniform political party, with a chain of command and a political manifesto. … Nor is merely disabling Osama bin Laden enough, as some suggest.

Actually, the prize David Suzuki actually received is named the “Right Livelihood Award”, but is otherwise known as the “alternative Nobel” prize. Just like Al Gore, David Suzuki has won his award not based on actually accomplishing anything, but merely for “raising awareness” about climate change. Which is sort of like handing out awards for being good in public relations [not that I don't think such awards exist in some corporate retreats and getaways], but not actually achieving anything.

By Charles Hugh Smith, OFTWOMINDS In a time of war, the Nobel peace Prize is already old news. Perhaps that is more significant than the prize itself. Here are 10 questions. The awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize has already been parsed by pundits of all stripes and is thus now “old news” as the hot war in Afghanistan fades to “background news.” The disconnect between the awarding of the Nobel peace Prize to a U.S. president leading two hot wars is painfully obvious, and so pundits of all political stripes have been scurrying for meaningful context.
