State and local governments that want to divest themselves of investments in companies which do business in Iran will be allowed to do so with a proposed law that the US House of Representatives approved Wednesday 14 October. No new sanctions on Iran are envisaged, but companies that invest more than $20 million in Iran’s energy sector can be targeted and their shares sold by state and municipal investment agencies. The federal government has the exclusive right to conduct foreign policy, but would waive its right in this case, if the Senate passes the law as well.

Assuming both parties are equal, the purpose of negotiation is to give something away to get something in return. That thing can be tangible like a contract to build fighter planes or something intangible like a promise to order fighter planes. Usually the tangible thing is better but intangible can be as beneficial assuming the party you’re dealing with is doing so in good faith. Recently President Obama, aka Give Away Artist, gave away SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative) installations planned for Eastern Europe.

The western world is really worried at the revelation by Iran of a new Uranium enrichment facility, which it wants to also throw open for UN inspection. The unexpected move comes on the heels of Iran declaring that it wants to develop Uranium enrichment facilities for peaceful purposes. That is the route every other country in the world has taken to finally make nuclear weapons. Iran is under immense pressure from US and Europe for dropping the nuclear designs, and they are able to get the support of Russia recently on the Iranian issue.

President Barack Obama should give back the Nobel Peace Prize.  In fact, not only should he give back this prize, he should preemptively reject any further honors which might be bestowed upon him, as he is clearly not worthy and never will be. There are many people who have argued that the prize was awarded “prematurely.”  This, of course, is nonsense.  After all, what could Obama do that would make him worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize?  So far, he barely managed to convince the most powerful nation

I can’t believe what I am reading today in the news. Barack Obama has agreed, in principle, to allow Russian weapons inspectors into our nuclear missile bases. No mention is made in the article that the U.S. would be able to inspect and count their missiles and warheads. The Obama Administration seems to be more concerned with assuaging (new term for appeasing) Russian concerns about our nuclear arms.

President Obama promised a transparent government and a break from the ways of the past. Finally, he has delivered on that promise. However, I don’t imagine many thought he meant that it would involve other countries and our own national security. If this latest gambit for “Reset” is to entice Russia to start playing nice and forgo their commercial interests with Iran, it appears that the Obama administration will stop at nothing in their pursuit of Russia.Fox News | Tentative Inspection Program Would Allow Russia to Visit U.S.

According to Western diplomats, Iran promised ‘to send about 80 percent of its stockpile of low-enriched uranium to Russia and France for processing and return to Tehran to replenish dwindling fuel stocks for a reactor in the capital that produces isotopes for cancer care.’ Iran’s low-enriched uranium stocks total around 1.5 metric tons. Received fuel would be refined to 20 percent. To meet the requirements for a year and a half of said reactor in Tehran, Iran needs up to 300kg of nuclear fuel.

Besides a Nobel Peace Prize, I can’t think of anything President Obama’s so-called “smart power” has gotten for the US. Pakistani’s still hate us , maybe even more than they did before. There is no doubt the U.S. is losing this PR battle. The bill was designed to redefine and restart the US-Pakistan relationship – to replace years of mistrust and doubt here about the U.S., which is widely thought to have used Pakistan for three decades instead of actually helping its people advance.

by JasonPresident Obama had the pundits and international taste testers howling “breakthrough” when he decided to scrap the central European missile defense shield. A point of contention with Russia that plagued relations between Russia and the U.S. during the Bush years. On the other hand, it increased cooperation, security, and confidence among other European countries. However, the Obama administration insisted that it needed Russia in order to bring Iran to the table and away from its nuclear ambitions.

Can’t say I didn’t warn Mr. Hopey-Changey. Now that you have fatuously pissed off our allies by taking away the long-range missile shield from the Poles and Czechs in an obvious attempt to entice the Russians into joining the U.S. in sanctions against Iran, and now that you have been given the Russian finger in return,  I have just one question:   How does it feel to be played like a fool, Obama? Get used to it .

Pete , not only has Obama badly embarrassed himself but he’s also made many moderate supporters look awfully foolish. They vouched for his savvy negotiating skills, assuring us that Obama wouldn’t sell our allies in Poland and the Czech Republic down the river for nothing. (If you’re going to betray allies, at least don’t go home empty-handed.) But even more critical, Obama’s Iran-engagement strategy was strongly supported by moderates and mainstream Jewish organizations.

It was a revealing day for U.S. Middle East policy. In one corner, the UN Security Council pondered the Goldstone report. U.S. Deputy Ambassador Alejandro Wolff was diplomatically precise and morally obtuse. Procedurally, the matter didn’t belong at the council, he explained. And as for the substance: “But we do take seriously the allegations in the report,” Wolff said. He urged Israel to “seriously investigate” the allegations while deploring Hamas’ incapability to undertake self-examination.

Let States Divest from Iran - commentarymagazine.com

Senators Bob Casey and Sam Brownback are asking Barack Obama to sign the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act into law. The bill, introduced by Casey and Brownback in May, provides a clear and legitimate legal basis for states to divest pension funds from Iran’s energy sector. Eighteen states have already divested from the Iranian energy sector. But, as the senators explain, doing so means “operating in a legal fog, unsure if the laws will get struck down under the doctrine of federal preemption.” Their bill, if signed into law, lifts that fog.

Patrick Goodenough CNSNews October 14, 2009 A d v e r t i s e m e n t Hopes that Russia might be more accommodating following the Obama administration’s missile defense shift appeared premature on Tuesday, when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton found no support at the Kremlin for tightening sanctions against Iran. A senior U.S. official traveling with Clinton had said before her meetings that she would press Russian leaders on “what specific forms of pressure Russia would be prepared to join us and our other allies in if Iran fails to live up to its obligations” on the nuclear dispute.
