Antitrust move poses few risks to health insurers WASHINGTON ? Democratic lawmakers are seeking to stir up competition by stripping health insurers of their protection from certain federal antitrust laws, although experts shrug off the effort as largely symbolic. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday she plans to include a measure that would remove the health insurance sector’s [...]

It would seem that Newt Gingrich’s , the Republican National Committee’s , and the National Republican Congressional Committee’s   decision to throw their weight behind Dede Scozzafava , the liberal Republican candidate for New York’s 23rd Congressional District’s seat, over conservative Doug Hoffman is one that I would think they’d regret.  Not so.  In fact Newt Gingrich is doubling down saying that it is time for the practical choice : Through my experience as Speaker of the House and building a Republican majority in 1994, I have learned that if America wants a conservative majority in Washington, parts of that majority are going to disagree.

By Dr. Aslam Abdullah, TMO Editor-in-chief It is now well known that four Republican Congressman did not hide their feelings against Islam and Muslims when they expressed their deep concern about Muslim interns and staffers in Congress. They were obviously targeting CAIR, suggesting that anyone close to this mainstream Muslim organization is not worthy of trust. this is an irony that those who are elected to protect Americans are calling fellow Americans suspects based on their religion and race.

Last August, you went to public forums and town halls across the country to hold your members of Congress accountable for their votes. You made your firm opposition to a government takeover of health care crystal clear. And on September 12, hundreds of thousands of you descended upon Washington to say once again that you would not be ignored. Congress took notice. But now, Speaker Pelosi and other top Democrats in Congress think you’ve been lulled to sleep.

In recent days there’s been a geyser of leaks from senior Senate Dem aides complaining that if only President Obama would show more leadership on the public option, it would be easier to round up enough support to include it in the final bill. Nancy Pelosi , however, strongly disagrees, her spokesperson tells me. I asked Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami today for a reaction to the complaints from the Senate side that Obama hasn’t pushed hard enough in demanding a public option, whether in public or behind closed doors.

Pelosi chastises Cheney for saying Obama ‘afraid’. WASHINGTON (CNN) – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed back Thursday at former Vice President Dick Cheney’s comment that President Barack Obama seems “afraid to make a decision” about his strategy in Afghanistan. Asked by a reporter about Cheney’s remark, made in a speech Wednesday, Pelosi sharply answered, “That’s really not a dignified question. … I mean Vice President Cheney’s. “The president has a very difficult decision to make.

Scarborough made a sort of out-of-character attack. Seven in 10 people in an online BBC-Harris Interactive poll last month said Obama should focus first on the economy and then on health reform. If the last few days are any indication, the partisan divide over Afghanistan doesn’t seem likely to shrink any time soon. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner, the House minority leader, on Thursday offered sharply different opinions about President Obama’s pace in deciding how to proceed in – and whether to send more troops to — Afghanistan. The statements, offered at the two leaders’ weekly news conferences, come a day after former Vice President Dick Cheney challenged the assertion of Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff, that the administration was asking questions the previous administration had not concerning Afghanistan.

Today, health insurance industry bigwigs are meeting in Washington, D.C., to plot out their strategy to defeat health care reform. We’ll be rallying to show them that we won’t accept anything less than affordable, high-quality coverage for everyone. Here’s what else is happening in the fight for health care: Health insurance companies, drug companies and their front groups have been breaking records in their fight to keep control over our health care, spending millions this summer on TV and lobbying in D.C.    Senators are looking to rein in the insurance industry by ending the industry’s exception from anti-trust laws.

The last week, pundits have painted a picture that says passing health care reform with a robust public option is a fait accompli. After yesterday’s vote, those pundits, with their tails between their legs, are noticing that there might be a difficult, lengthy slog ahead for them : “For many of us, we’re OK with the public option,” said Rep. Steve Driehaus, a first-year Democrat from Ohio. “There are other things we’re more concerned with.” “I think they’re miscalculating,” Rep.

Here’s what President Obama said to his supporters last night in regards to the health reform package making its way through Congress.  It is time for us to pass a bill.  Whether we get everything we want or not, there is no longer time to delay on this critical issue.  On the upside, Nancy Pelosi has made it clear that she intends to produce a House bill with the most robust public option on the table, and in the Senate, Harry Reid has begun to make statements that indicate the public option might be put into the bill during the Finance committee’s reconciliation.  This would then require 60 votes to strip out the public option, which is virtually impossible.
