Yesterday the Senate passed the LGBT hate crime bill we encouraged you to oppose earlier this week. The bill, The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, will extend the federal definition of hate crimes to include crimes committed based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability and provide the federal  government power to intercede when they believe states are not properly pursuing hate crime prosecution.  Pres. Obama has already promised to sign the bill as soon as it reaches his desk.

She cites the Afghan constitution’s inability to limit sharia law, which subjects women’s rights to mullah interpretation, and President Karzai ’s decision to swap his support for the Shiite Personal Status Law or, as it became known in the Western press, the Marital Rape Law, in exchange for Shiite votes.  Ultimately, while women’s rights are central to Afghan stability, she explains that aid is being delivered primarily by the U.S.

As most of you know, former Vice President Dick Cheney gave a superlative speech a couple of nights ago at the Center for Security Policy , ( transcript thoughtfully provided by AE ) in which he delivered a blistering critique of the Obama administration’s unconscionable selling out of the new democracies in Eastern Europe to appease a fatally ill and virtually toothless Russia and the callous sacrificing of American soldiers because of the refusal of the administration to act in Afghanistan.

The decline in Barack Obama’s popularity since July has been the steepest of any president at the same stage of his first term for more than 50 years. BY TOBY HARNDEN The London Telegraph Gallup recorded an average daily approval rating of 53 per cent for Mr Obama for the third quarter of the year, a sharp drop from the 62 per cent he recorded from April. WASHINGTON – NATO defense ministers Friday endorsed the kind of broad counterinsurgency approach for Afghanistan that is the basis for the pending troop request by the NATO and the U.S. commander there, General Stanley McChrystal. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the defense ministers have a “general shared view” that the alliance must make Afghanistan strong enough to defend itself against militant forces.

In its mindless war against Fox, the White House tried to ban Fox News from the White House press pool that was to interview the “pay czar,” Kenneth Feinberg. (Yes, it was a nice touch of imperial irony that the effort to cut off access to a particular news outlet came in the context of an interview of an administrative official who is not subject to congressional confirmation or oversight and whose job it is to dictate compensation rules to private firms that were bullied into taking government bailouts.) We don’t hang around the sandlots as much as we used to, thanks to the restraining order, but every once in awhile we’ll still catch a glimpse of a hot young fireballer burning up the bus leagues.  Today it’s Allan Erickson, who was called up from Short-Season A to play for American Thinker this week, pitching a column entitled Obama’s war on Fox News & half the country .  Now I’m sure some of you are checking your programs and thinking to yourself, “Who the hell is Allan Erickson?  And why are all these douchebags named Erickson?”  (As Jay B.

Senate passes measure that would protect gays By Ben Pershing Friday, October 23, 2009 The Senate cleared a historic hate crimes bill Thursday for President Obama’s signature, approving new federal penalties for attacks on gay men and lesbians. The legislation, which was attached to the conference report for the bill outlining the Pentagon’s budget, marks the culmination of a years-long fight by civil rights groups to codify the expanded protections.

In an article in the Asia Times on Line, M. K. Bradrakumar throws some additional light on some of the goings on in the Middle East in relation to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia has two great worries over Iran. First, that Obama is pressing ahead with the normalization process with Tehran – a “thaw” was visible at the Geneva talks on October 1- and Tehran has begun responding to US overtures. The worst Saudi nightmare is coming true.

Nothing Satanic here.  Sorry, this blog is going to be a number of actual statements, with my trusty translations of these statements.          Statement #1, By Rep. John Boehner :   “The White House and congressional Democrats know that their liberal special interest agenda is not very popular, and now they’re following a familiar pattern: When you can’t win an argument based on the facts, launch vicious political attacks.

Dick Cheney is back out on the hustings blathering all kinds of inaccurate shit, including that the Bush administration had left the incoming Obama administration a perfectly good troop-increase plan on Afghanistan but it hadn’t seemed interested. The truth of the matter is that the Pentagon did send such a plan up to the White House, but President Bush tabled it , leaving even more heavy lifting for the incoming president. from PowerlineThe Obama administration — no class, bad characterIn his speech last night to the Center for Security Policy, former vice president Cheney blew the whistle on some egregious dishonesty by the Obama administration: Recently, President Obama’s advisors have decided that it’s easier to blame the Bush Administration than support our troops. This weekend they leveled a charge that cannot go unanswered.

Bush’s Republican party was voted out of office, and at least five years after reports first surfaced that music was being used in “War on Terror” facilities in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo as part of a package of “enhanced interrogation technique,” — which, in any world other than the reality-defying one inhabited by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld,

Obama wants to give the Sovereignty of this Nation over to the United Nations.  Why?  Because he is a bumbling idiot .  That’s why.

WASHINGTON: The US Senate is poised to a send a defence bill to President Barack Obama late on Thursday, which includes tough new conditions on American military aid to Pakistan. More Insane Rantings from the Crazy Man in the Attic By: emptywheel October 22, 2009 Someone let Dick “PapaDick” Cheney out of his undisclosed location last night–they even gave him an award for being a “keeper of the flame.” In spite of the fact that the press is covering it as another serious attack from Cheney, I find it pretty laughable. How else to treat a speech, for example, in which PapaDick boasts that Rummy got this “flame-keeper” award before him? I’m told that among those you’ve recognized before me was my friend Don Rumsfeld.

WASHINGTON – The White House has rejected former Vice President Dick Cheney’s criticism that President Barack Obama is indecisive on Afghanistan. In a speech in Washington late Wednesday, Cheney said President Obama appears “afraid” to make a decision regarding the war in Afghanistan. Cheney said the White House “must stop dithering while America’s armed forces are in danger.” At the White House Thursday, presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs said what Cheney calls “dithering,” President Obama calls his sacred responsibility to the men and women in uniform.

“There is no likelihood that the current US war in Afghanistan can achieve its aims (a narrower goal, the elimination of Al Qaeda, has for the most part already been accomplished)…. Accordingly, the first step for Washington must be to abandon the idea of a decades-long counterinsurgency, fire its advocates–including Gen. Stanley McChrystal and Gen. David Petraeus, architect of the Counterinsurgency Field Manual–and admit that the multiheaded insurgency in southern and eastern Afghanistan can’t be defeated by military means.
