1. Liberals and conservatives can agree on one thing: The gap between the Republican National Committee and reality make the Pacific Ocean look like a pond.EVIL.2. Joe Conason of Salon said everyone has it wrong. It is Fox News that is Nixonian and President Obama who is the poor hapless Katherine Graham whose tit may be caught in the big fat wringer. Boo hoo hoo.The Scorekeeper offers readers their choice of why Conason is so confused.A. He thinks Fox News is the president of the United States and Barack Obama is Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward.

My husband Marc informed me that on a Salafi forum a local Philly Muslim warned people about attending any of lectures at the Islamic Literacy Series . The brother basically said that we were a bunch of latte drinking*, homosexual loving, elitist, Obama loving Muslims. In another email, someone criticized us by saying that we were not scholars of Islam, have never lived in Saudi Arabia (although I have lived in Kuwait and Egypt), there was no such thing as tasawwuf, and were going to commit shirk in these lectures.

In an interview with reporters, Vice President Biden said it was “absolutely wrong” of former Vice President Cheney to say the Obama administration is “dithering” on Afghanistan. From the pool report: “At one point, he grew dismissive. Asked about Cheney’s criticism, he said: “Who cares what — ” and then stopped himself to find another way to put it. (‘Yeah, yeah, I can see the headline now,’ he said. ‘I’m getting better, guys. I’m getting a little better, you know what I mean?’)

“US Joins Ranks Of Failed States?” by Paul Craig Roberts “The US has every characteristic of a failed state. The US government’s current operating budget is dependent on foreign financing and money creation. Too politically weak to be able to advance its interests through diplomacy, the US relies on terrorism and military aggression. Costs are out of control, and priorities are skewed in the interest of rich organized interest groups at the expense of the vast majority of citizens.

President Barack Obama hasn’t been in office one full year, yet he has traveled the world “apologizing” for America and has declared War on Rush Limbaugh, War on Fox News, and labeled peaceful Tea Party protesters as terrorists. It’s easy to understand why one may be a little puzzled at the president’s bizarre behavior, but in the worldview of transnational-progressivism, this all makes complete sense. Unfortunately, the dangers to our free America do not reside in the remote caves of Afghanistan, but exist within our own borders and within our own government.

Cheney says Obama is dithering in Afghanistan by not giving McChrystal the troops he needs to “win” the war. How quickly Cheney forgets that he and Bush dithered in Afghanistan for 8 long years. They dithered as the poppy crops came back bigger than ever. They dithered as Karzai’s brother took over a multi billion dollar heroin trade. They dithered as Al Qaeda slipped away and the Taliban regrouped. That Cheney would criticize Obama on Afghanistan is not only outrageous, it’s absurd.

There is something rotten in the current state of Washington’s Afghan policy making. The White House, we are told, is in the midst of an intense review of our strategy with nothing having been decided. Yet the NATO defense ministers meeting in Brussels on Thursday gave their seal of approval to the ’surge’ being actively promoted by General Stanley McChrystal. The General made a long presentation of his plan behind closed doors.

I think Toby Harnden of the UK’s Telegraph describes pretty well what most of us have observed and concluded about President Obama: Perhaps we should not be surprised that the land of the permanent campaign has produced a president like Barack Obama. During his White House bid, Mr Obama’s staff argued that his masterful oversight of the machinery that ultimately got him elected was his highest achievement. In many respects this was true, though Mr Obama was more chairman than CEO.

That’s not what he says, of course, but actions speak louder than words no? With his attendance at fundraisers for Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts today — boy, there’s a pair of popular incumbents — President Obama has now attended seven fundraisers since Gen. Stanley McChrystal submitted his request for additional troops in Afghanistan. Boy, it’s a shame Gen. McChrystal isn’t an unpopular incumbent Democrat; if he were, Obama might be more eager to help him out.

The campaign season is long and grueling and some people prove to be better campaigners than others. Barack Obama was an excellent campaigner. The problem is; he seems to not realize the campaign is over. The time for demonizing the opposition has ended and it is time to start the process of governing, a process that calls for inclusiveness. The time for speeches is over. It is time for action. Perhaps we should not be surprised that the land of the permanent campaign has produced a president like Barack Obama.

By Scott Spiegel On matters such as whether to spend $800 billion on “stimulus” projects, $1 trillion on health care “reform,” or billions of dollars to build stadiums in the “city” of Chicago, President Obama is all about the now. When it comes to approving a months-old request from his beleaguered general in Afghanistan to increase troops in an eight-years-and-running war to support the dying soldiers already there, Obama engages in leisurely stargazing. NYTimes : NATO Defense Ministers Endorse Wider Afghan Effort By THOM SHANKER BRATISLAVA, Slovakia — Defense ministers from NATO on Friday endorsed the ambitious counterinsurgency strategy for Afghanistan proposed by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, giving new impetus to his recommendation to pour more troops into the eight-year-old war. General McChrystal, the senior American and allied commander in Afghanistan, made an unannounced appearance here on Friday to brief the defense ministers on his strategic review of a war in which the American-led campaign has lost momentum to a tenacious Taliban insurgency.

BARCHA, Afghanistan (Reuters) – U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Tiffany Jones chews tobacco, spitting the juice into the Afghan desert as she talks, and wears her M-16 automatic rifle slung across her chest just like her male colleagues. Jones wanted to be a sniper but, like many women on active service in the U.S. military, she has never been outside “the wire” — the heavily guarded razor-wire perimeter of her base. “I don’t think the American public on a whole is ready to hear about females in the military getting blown up and their body parts everywhere,” Jones said.

Recently I was uncharacteristically pleased by something we did in the Middle East. I admired how Obama used the suspense over whether we would send more troops to Afghanistan, to force Karzai to agree to a less corrupt, do-over election. So I blogged generally in praise of Obama’s Afghanistan policy. I still admire that particular move by Obama; but it was just one thing. Unfortunately, there is everything else.

Barack Obama sees worst poll rating drop in 50 years The decline in Barack Obama’s popularity since July has been the steepest of any president at the same stage of his first term for more than 50 years. Telegraph.co.uk Gallup recorded an average daily approval rating of 53 per cent for Mr Obama for the third quarter of the year, a sharp drop from the 62 per cent he recorded from April. His current approval rating – hovering just above the level that would make re-election an uphill struggle – is close to the bottom for newly-elected president.
