The public option is dead. Long live the public option. That’s the situation now prevailing on a key sticking point in health care reform. GOPers hate the public option because they say it would symbolize the Obama administration’s encroachment into the private sector and be a huge step into socialized medicine. Democrats are split, with some progressives nearly making support of the public option in voting a litmus test for “real” Democrats akin to what Republicans conservatives have done on the issue of abortion to members of their party who dare support it.

While Democrats in Congress have spent months demonizing insurers as greedy villainous monsters, from Barack Obama to Nancy Pelosi to Alan Grayson, the American media stood mute rather than report on the extent of this supposed greed. Why? It’s not as if these companies don’t have annual reports, or that business media haven’t tracked their performance. The publicly-traded companies have their bottom lines exposed for all to see, and yet the media has steadfastly whistled and looked askance

So, you know how President Obama declared a swine flu emergency ? This is a move that makes it easier to deal with the spread of the disease by waiving some Medicare and Medicaid processing rules in order to speed up treatment. What does it mean? Oh, World Nuts, you are entertaining, except for the being real and having readers and thus being kind of frightening part.

Three senators expressed three different views on the public option Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union. WASHINGTON (CNN) – As Democratic leaders in Congress appear to be converging on proposals for a public health insurance option that might win passage in each chamber, the comments of two Democratic senators Sunday suggested that a long fight is likely ahead in the Senate. Conservative Democrat Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska told CNN’s John King that he has not committed to lend his vote to aid Democrats in avoiding a filibuster of health care reform legislation.

As you are probably aware, there is a very heated debate going on in our country over the need for health care reform. It was one of the main agendas that Barack Obama ran on and with Democrats controlling Congress, it seems a given that some sort of health care reform legislation is sure to reach the White House for his signature. Part of the debate over health care reform has centered on who is really to blame for the high price of health care and insurance.

The resurrection of the public option is the latest and one of the most surprising turns in the long battle over legislation to overhaul the nation’s health-care system. Under assault for months, and declared on life support repeatedly in recent weeks, the provision for a public insurance option is unexpectedly alive as House and Senate leaders prepare to send their bills to the floor. That doesn’t mean it’s a done deal. Whether it survives the final battles, and in what form, are still the unanswerable questions.

( The Hill ) Approximately 40 House Democrats are prepared to block healthcare reform legislation from coming to the floor should the bill include federal subsidies for abortions, said Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) Friday. Stupak, who is conservative on social issues, told CNS News that he has organized the voting bloc to support his amendment that would strip the abortion provisions from the legislation. House Rules Committee chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), according to Stupak, said that there is “no way” her panel would provide a vote for his amendment.

See, this is the problem with thinking that healthcare can be fixed by going after the insurers. It’d be one thing, if they health insurers commanded fat margins, and that if by lowering them, we could reduce systemic costs. But they don’t. What makes healthcare expensive is the direct cost of supplying healthcare. Bring that down, and the insurance and coverage problems will start to go away.

Before lambasting “winky” (the one eyed wonder who is currently Prime Minister of the United Kingdom), I do want to point out a few things. The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, all failed to enact a massive screw the taxpayers to the ceiling “stimulus” bills that rewarded all of their political allies. As a result, their recession is in large part significantly less… their unemployment is less (if you can believe that)… and the overall duration of the recession appeared to be less….

The Failures of both the Hard Right and the Hard Left examined in a New Light!!! The Hard Right Position We have a gridlock of media and academic construction putting two groups (the Poor, the Underclass) against each other on emotive appeals to extremist concepts that are not real and counterproductive to social progress. On the one hand, you have the rural poor (Rednecks, Hillbilly’s, and Trailer Trash), whose greatest fear is that swarms of Black Helicopters will issue forth from Washington DC and force them to clean up the junk laying around in their yards.

Small businesses in the US are facing sharp rises in their health insurance premiums next year. On average premiums appear to be rising 15% in 2010. The NYT quotes “experts” as suggesting that the insurance industry is “raising premiums to get ahead of any legislative changes that might reduce their profits”. Unfortunately for this theory, it seems to overlook the fact that Medicare, the government insurer is also raising its premiums by the same margin .

I always thought it a good thing that my parents don’t know what I do. Sure, they know where I work, but since I’m in finance and they’re in Geology and Endocrinology respectively, the last thing they want to know is anything related to finance. In fact, after spending a tiresome amount of time explaining my job to them, I finally gave in and stopped correcting them when they tell people I do something related to the stock exchange.
