It’s been a few days since the clincher of the NLCS. I am still pretty spent. Those NLCS games were a bitch. With the exception of the 11-0 Game 3 blowout, every game had a ton of drama. Here’s some interesting stats and more as we wait to find out who we’re playing in the Series. Jayson Werth is now the Phillies all-time postseason home run leader with 7 long balls. His opposite field shot to right-center on Wednesday was crushed. The first ever postseason home run by a Phillie was hit by Fred Luderus in the 1915 World Series.

The SST reports : Finance minister Bill English has signalled the government will next year get tough with tax-dodgers by closing loopholes that allow wage earners to avoid paying their share of tax. The IRD says the government is missing out on $300 million a year because of wage earners who squirrel away money into trust accounts to avoid paying the top income tax rate. More is lost because of earnings that are “sheltered” by a company created solely to avoid tax.

Additional terms were not disclosed. Acta was fired by the Washington Nationals in July. The Indians chose him after a second round of interviews over former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine and Indians Triple-A manager Torey Lovullo. Tony La Russa will be back next year to manage the St. Louis Cardinals. Per ESPN.com: “I’m coming to an understanding of what I’m doing and intend to get it settled one way or the other shortly,” La Russa told the Post-Dispatch. La Russa, who during the offseason lives in Alamo, Calif., east of Oakland, was scheduled to arrive in St. Louis for a Bruce Springsteen concert Sunday night. The 65-year-old La Russa has been mulling his future since the NL Central champion Cardinals were swept in the division series by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Oct.

Thanks to an expanded playoff schedule, the World Series will end in November for only the second time in history: Not long after the conclusion of Game 3, or even during its late innings, Major League Baseball and the World Series will go somewhere they have never intentionally gone before: the month of November. For only the second time since the Boston Americans beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first World Series in 1903, baseball’s champion will be crowned in a month that has always belonged to football and sports with enough sense to play indoors.

Much has been made of the NFL’s use of anniversary AFL jerseys this season. The created buzz and although luckily most of the Denver Broncos striped throwback socks won’t be at retail, the jerseys raised some extra interest. Whether that buzz is needed for the NFL to raise awareness who knows, but it certainly created a little more water cooler talk. However many other leagues and brands do need buzz, and one, The Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League, took three big steps this past week in helping a cause, identifying with a legend and creating some great exposure for the brand and for hockey in general.

Editor’s Note: The new collection of Cuts and Glory x Manny Pacquiao shirts are live! After watching the critically acclaimed and extremely fun to watch HBO 24/7 earlier tonight, I was taken aback at how indifferent Manny Pacquiao was toward Freddie Roach. At the end of the first episode, Freddie was worried the training camp would be stalled by the typhoons and asked Manny to leave for Los Angeles as soon as possible.

Dodgers sweep Cards! Today was a good day to be a dodger fan. They won the national league west division series over the Saint Louis Cardinals. While winning would be great in itself, their win is more substantial because the dodgers win put a proverbial foot in the mouths of all the naysayers. The dodgers have been the number one team in the NL practically since day one and yet the east coast loving ESPN and even our own Los Angeles times had the cards winning in 3-4 games.

More links on this Saturday night… The Indians’ “trio of managerial candidates” each told the club how they would improve the team’s less-than-stellar bullpen. Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer brings us the ideas of Manny Acta, Bobby Valentine and Torey Lovullo. Chris Perez was one of the Tribe’s bright spots in relief, posting 38 Ks in 33.1 IP after coming over from St. Louis in the Mark DeRosa trade .

Thanks to the rain in New York, we’re without baseball once again tonight. No need to panic though because we got you covered with links from around the web: The Phillies will have the opportunity to repeat as world champions but they’re already looking beyond this year, writes Jayson Stark of ESPN.com . Stark compares this Phillies team to the late-90s Yankees and notes that unlike that Yanks lineup, the Phillies position players are all north of 30, with the exception of Shane Victorino

A few more links to peruse as MLB officials sift through rainy forecasts in NYC… According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle , Oakland GM Billy Beane has touched base with free agent right-hander Justin Duchscherer . It’s not yet clear, however, whether the A’s will try to retain him. MLBTR profiled the “Duke of Hurl” about a month ago. Diamond Leung passes along a nice anecdote involving Dodgers assistant GM Kim Ng and Justin Orenduff , the club’s 2004 first-round pick. Orenduff was designated for assignment last year to clear roster space for Manny Ramirez and then retired in March of 2009.
