Regardless of how President Barack Obama’s health-care agenda plays out in Congress , it has not been a success in public opinion. Opposition to ObamaCare has risen all year. According to the Gallup polling organization, the percentage of Americans who believe the cost of health care for their families will “get worse” under the proposed reforms rose to 49% from 42% in just the past month. The percentage saying it would “get better” stayed at 22%.

From the Wall Street Journal : First the legislature greatly expanded MaineCare, the state’s Medicaid program. Today Maine families with incomes of up to $44,000 a year are eligible; 22% of the population is now in Medicaid, roughly twice the national average. … the state created a “public option” known as DirigoChoice. … This plan would compete with private plans such as Blue Cross. To entice lower income Mainers to enroll, it offered taxpayer-subsidized premiums.

In case anybody cares, and you shouldn’t, I am now officially agnostic on just how important if at all the “public option” is in supporting the eventual health care bill.  I have just heard too many good arguments on all sides of the question to be able to persuasively argue one or the other. I remain convinced that, in a perfect world, a sweeping single-payer system — free, universal health care paid for by progressive taxation — is the best way to go.

It’s a beautiful headline and oddly enough it wasn’t reported in the U.S. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/barackobama/6409721/Barack-Obama-sees-worst-poll-rating-drop-in-50-years.html Often liberals complain conservatives are stupid. A new study shows there may actually be some limited validity to this argument, at least as far a traditional conservatism, not necessarily what is labeled conservative in the U.S (the small government, lasse faire type).

Specifically, the mandate portion requiring all Americans to have health insurance is unconstitutional. The Federal Government does not have this authority, because it is not enumerated in the Constitution. An amendment would have to be passed in order for this authority to exist. Otherwise, expect Obamacare to be challenged all the way to the Supreme Court and lose in a slam dunk case. Verum Serum finds this problem for Dem’s isn’t new, it was a stumbling block for Hillary care back in the 90’s too.

I am declaring a national emergency over the H1N1 virus. It’s an emergency, so I’m signing it now . But, I’m going to wait until the next day to announce it . I mean, what’s the hurry? We must take whatever steps we can to make sure that we have flu shots for everyone! Except for my kids . The rates of illness continue to rise rapidly within many communities across the nation, and the potential exists for the pandemic to overburden health care resources in some localities.

As the Obama administration watched their poll numbers plummet in regard to health care reform (and the public option in particular), they began trying to reshape what the debate was about.  Instead of continuing the positive tone of making sure everyone is covered and lowering costs, they went negative, attacking and vilifying the insurance companies.  [...] Related posts: Another Day, Another Promise Broken Obama Thinks Doctors are Greedy? Fairly balanced? Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace may have abided being called to account by former Prez Bill Clinton (for allegedly being a Fox shill doing a conservative hit job on Clinton). However, he was somewhat more sensitive when Fox’s very own, i.e., Juan Williams, took him to task on the public option. During FNS’s segment on Obamacare, Wallace declared, “Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi [is] keeping hope alive for a government-run health insurance as a central feature of health care reform,” He further asserted, “It seems like it was only a week ago that everybody in this town said that the public option was dead.

Via Glenn Reynolds , an intriguing question : Some companies noted last week that Congress’ plans to mandate that everyone buy health insurance include only weak penalties. The plans also make insurers take on customers who are already sick. If you’re young and daring, you pay the low penalty and go insurance-free until your doctor says you’ve got cancer. You then apply and pay $800-a-month premiums for $10,000-a-month care. Sweet, until the industry inevitably collapses, say insurers.
10/25/2009
Say it ain’t so:AMERICANS seem to like the idea of broadening health insurance coverage, but they may not want to be forced to buy it. With health care costs high and rising, such government mandates would make many people worse off. The proposals now before Congress would require just about everyone to buy health insurance or to get it through their employers — which would generally result in lower wages.

Even supporters of Obama and this bill have admitted that they will ration care and deny care that is not cost effective. Maybe this universal health insurance debate is a good thing after all. It’s raising a lot of questions that apply equally well to other socialist entitlement programs. If we’re toting up the cost of Obamacare, there’s surely a ledger line for the demolition of an industry, even an unpopular one. Insurers’ power will be transferred to federal agencies, their earnings to a public option, their workers to the dole. Ah, well: Villains defeated. This is exactly the spirit of Obamacare.

Barack Obama: The do as I say, not as I do President. President Barack Obama has declared that swine flu is a national emergency in the United States. However, Obama has not vaccinated his own two daughters. So how exactly does a President declare a national emergency and not vaccinate his own children? The declaration, signed Friday night and announced Saturday, comes with the disease more prevalent than ever in the country and production delays undercutting the government’s initial, optimistic estimates that as many as 120 million doses of the vaccine could be available by mid-October.

Making someone else pay Suppose that, besides being the Enemies of All Mankind, health insurers are actually right. Some companies noted last week that Congress’ plans to mandate that everyone buy health insurance include only weak penalties. The plans also make insurers take on customers who are already sick. In Barack Obama’s vision of America, people are not allowed to disagree with the president’s position. Even of facts are used, dissent must be crushed.  Such it is with the the insurance industry “Even as America’s families have been battered by spiraling health care costs, health insurance companies and their executives have reaped windfall profits from a broken system.” Barack Obama July 2009 Two weeks ago when the Insurance Industry released a study showing that Obamacare would actually increase costs, the POTUS went on a rampage once again : It’s smoke and mirrors.
10/25/2009
When you get the AP doing fact checking, you have to know something’s amiss in Obama fantasyland. In the POTUS’s desperate attempt to simplify his demand for remaking America’s health care system, he reverts to the proven Alinsky techniques of finding a demon, targeting that demon and isolating it to stir up public discontent. His latest mantras have been focused on portraying those evil health insurers in the same light as Wall Street CEO’s. Trouble is, facts get in the way of the rhetoric.

Washington Examiner : From the people who brought us the swine flu vaccine shortage – Government-run health care! UPDATED By: Mark Tapscott President Obama’s late-night declaration of a nationwide public health emergency last night shouldn’t be allowed to obscure the most important lesson of the developing swine flu crisis – The same government that only weeks ago promised abundant supplies of swine flu vaccine by mid-October will be running your health care system under Obamacare.

Tyler Cowen talks about the likely impact of a health insurance mandate in today’s New York Times: The proposals now before Congress would require just about everyone to buy health insurance or to get it through their employers — which would generally result in lower wages. In other words, millions of people would be compelled to spend lots of money on something they previously did not want, at least not at prevailing prices.
10/25/2009
This is ironic to say the least: A little-noticed tidbit in Saturday’s Washington Post is sure to raise eyebrows among liberal supporters of a gorvernment-run healthcare plan: the plan is likely to be administered by a private insurance company , the very companies that progressive activists are trying to unseat. The public-option debate is frustrating some Democrats, who have come to believe that a government-run plan is neither as radical as its conservative critics have portrayed, nor as important as its liberal supporters contend.

Look folks, I disagree with just about everything President Obama and his administration say and do, but I have to be reasonable in my criticism. The administration is not putting some chemical into the H1N1 vaccine that will turn our children into socialists through some twisted plot worthy of the Manchurian Candidate Returns. It’s a flu shot. That’s all. My family will get the vaccine if it is available to us on time. You’re probably well aware by now that production is way too slow relative to the speed the flu is spreading.

WASHINGTON – Quick quiz: What do these enterprises have in common? Farm and construction machinery, Tupperware, the railroads, Hershey sweets, Yum food brands and Yahoo? Answer: They’re all more profitable than the health insurance industry. In the health care debate, Democrats and their allies have gone after insurance companies as rapacious profiteers making “immoral” and “obscene” returns while “the bodies pile up.” Ledgers tell a different reality.

NOT SEEING A STORY HERE: Various people are emailing me saying “Obama declared a national emergency over swine flu, but his own daughters aren’t being vaccinated!” But if you read the story, you get this: The Centers for Disease Control recommend that children ages 6 months through 18 years of age receive a vaccination against the H1N1 flu virus. At this time only children with chronic medical conditions are receiving the vaccination because their immune system is not strong enough to fight off the strain. So they’re not getting the vaccine because there’s a shortage, and they don’t fit the triage guidelines.
