By Mehdi Hasan , senior editor (politics) at the New Statesman and a former news and current affairs editor at Channel 4 (THE GUARDIAN, 26/10/09): Whisper it quietly. Contrary to popular opinion, the west has won the war in Afghanistan. How do I know this? Because Barack Obama says the aim of the war is to “disrupt, dismantle and defeat” al-Qaida in Afghanistan – a strategy endorsed by our very own Gordon Brown.

October 26th, 2009The Washington Post reports that John Kerry is satisfied to maintain the status quo in Afghanistan. Kerry is perfectly happy to let the Taliban and al Qaeda run around the country raising Hell and lowering Afghans’ trust in the US commitment to their security;“We do not yet have the critical guarantees of governance and development capacity” in Afghanistan, said Kerry (D-Mass.), who just returned from a trip there.

CNN: Nearly a year after the presidential election, the excitement of Barack Obama’s campaign has faded into the reality of an Obama White House. As observers try to determine what time it is in American politics, they arrive at opposite conclusions. To some, said Tulane University political scientist Thomas Langston, Obama is like Jimmy Carter, and the nation will soon hammer the nails into the coffin of a dying Democratic coalition just as voters, tired of the Carter “malaise” era, handed the White House to Republicans in 1980.

Rest in peace to the fallen. In the fire fighting industry, air crashes are the number one cause of deaths. It is an unfortunate reality of using aircraft for logistics and support, but something we can’t get away from. All we can do is to continue to apply Kaizen to all air operations, and find the weaknesses that could contribute to future accidents and correct them. We will never be free of accidents or shoot downs in war, and I am surprised we don’t see more of these incidents.

Thank you David for your kind introduction and for all your terrific reporting over the years. David’s most recent book , The Inheritance, makes the point that while President Obama took office with great promise, his predecessor left him with some very thorny problems and few good options. And nowhere is that inheritance more fraught than in Afghanistan. On day one, this Administration assumed responsibility for a war heading from strategic drift to a dangerous decline.

( CNN) — We are losing in Afghanistan, on two fronts . The most important center of gravity of the conflict — as the Taliban well recognizes — is the American public. And now, most Americans are opposed to the war. For years, Afghanistan was “the forgotten war,” and when Americans started paying attention again — roughly around the time of President Obama’s inauguration — what they saw was not a pretty sight: a corrupt Afghan government, a world-class drug trade, a resurgent Taliban and steadily rising U.S.

To say that Hamid Karzai’s recent criticisms of the Obama Administration is frustrating would be an under-statement. Karzai says that Afghanistan has not received commitments promised from the United States, but much of the blame for that can be placed upon Karzai for not pressuring the Bush Administration for the past 8 years to live up to its word. It seems as if Karzai, in a bid to appeal to the Afghan masses who have lost what little faith they had in him, is trying to hold the less than one year old Obama Administration responsible for the sins of the Bush Administration Karzai was too afraid to stand up to.

What US strategists have yet to learn is that the Iraqi people will not freely accept a pro-US regime in Baghdad and that the “exit strategy” will inevitably result in long-term occupation, and bring only more bloodshed and destruction. Ignored by the west, Iraqis continue to suffer as the US’s ‘exit strategy’ begins to unravel. It is tragic that Iraq hits the headlines only if there is a major explosion with hundreds killed and injured.

Last week, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the secretary general of NATO, openly advocated a counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan during a NATO defense ministerial conference . It was a curious position to take. The NATO secretary generalship is an institutionally weak position, commanding no ability to order allied countries to do anything, and has traditionally been awarded to a European civilian official, who rarely gets crosswise with the Americans.

We are going to continue to see more stories like this–stories designed to get us to accept the fact that the Taliban are going to return to some form of power in Afghanistan. We are already losing the war of perception in Afghanistan, which is the first front, and our nervous partners are already more accepting of rapproachment with various “nationalistic” elements in the Taliban. The part of the Taliban that has more cachet in the region is the one that wants to make peace with the neighbors and throw al Qaeda under the bus.

Another fine contribution from the ‘religion of peace’.As the Obama administration weighed sending more troops to Afghanistan, the worst terrorist attack in two years rocked Baghdad – a grim reminder that the insurgency thought to be largely defeated in 2007 and 2008 is still capable of spectacular bloodshed. Obama campaigned on the idea of restoring America’s reputation in the world. For the most part, when it comes to politics these shows are against the current Obama administration, the House, and the Senate (both of which are currently Democratic majority). We all know this because during the Bush administration, this media outlet was extremely pro-Bush and pro-Republican. Previously, the majority of Americans believed whatever Bush and his administration said because most media outlets in the beginning gave him positive coverage. That explains why we had the majority

After a couple of months of uncertainty as to the direction the new Japanese government will take in terms of American military bases on the island of Okinawa, the Japanese Prime Minister has stated that the U.S. base should stay on Okinawa. The Futenma airfield is a large Marine Corp base that is at the center of the controversy, although the future of other bases on the island is also being discussed. There have been concerns about growing tensions between the United States and Japan.

I’m fed up with the games and the fact that a privileged few tell the rest of us how to behave. This administration is a hot mess, and I am not afraid to say that. We are watching the implosion of hope, and over half the country doesn’t approve of the change.

Are the nation’s fiscal, economic, military, political and social challenges setting us up for a Military Coup? Will the U.S. Military Industrial Complex, acting through our Joint Chiefs of Staff or some other high-level corps of U.S. Military officers, and supported by a variety of angry business leaders and extreme conservatives be so resentful of any changes to our national priorities that they would encourage a complete removal of our elected civilian federal government, save the Department of Defense?

Former vice president Dick Cheney came out a few days ago with another of his angry tirades against President Obama and Democrats who he believes are less than true patriots. The man of anger was upset because Obama was taking time reviewing strategy in Afghanistan. Cheney exploded because he does not like dilly-dallying and wants the president to have the courage of George Bush in his famous “surge.” As I recall, the surge was designed to end violence in Iraq and restore the semblance of law and order.

It’s been over ten months since you were inaugurated to the office of the Presidency of the United States. In general, if you were a baby, you would be about 10 months now, still crawling, still trying to figure out who’s who, and what’s what. However, your responsibility as President does not require on-site job training, it doesn’t require you to figure out who’s who and what’s what, it requires actions. And, actions must be now. I have always been one of your biggest supporters.

Because nothing says “I’m out of fresh ideas” like a link-dump. Megan McArdle found a good article detailing how forcing a real filibuster is more difficult than you think. Bookworm on Afghanistan, Democrats, and war : I don’t think the Democrats are capable of conceiving an outcome to a war that is tantamount to “victory.” To them, all wars are failures because they are . . . wars. This means that there are no strategic goals that the Democrats can contemplate that will justify continuing to fight a war.

WASHINGTON — When President Obama named two marquee diplomats as his special emissaries to the Middle East and to Afghanistan and Pakistan last January, many here wondered whether they would eclipse Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Nine months later, the two envoys, Richard C. Holbrooke and George J. Mitchell, are the ones fighting to stay in the limelight. For reasons having to do with personality clashes, deteriorating conditions on the ground and the sheer difficulty of reconciling old enemies, Mr.

Obama spent the day golfing instead of making his long awaited decision about sending more troops to Afghanistan. For weeks, President Obama has been indecisively dithering about whether to send more troops to Afghanistan to fight what he correctly calls a “war of necessity.” General Stanley A. McChrystal’s report , in which he requests more troops, was issued at the end of August . The Commander in Chief, taking political heat for not having enough women in his inner circle, found golf a more important political expediency than finally making the Afghan decision.

There is no question that Pakistan needs to eliminate the terrorists who call themselves Pakistani Taliban. But it is also true that Pakistan is destabilized today because of the pro-American policies of its ruling elite. This is written by an American. Pakistanis need to read this. Under heavy pressure from the Obama administration, Pakistan is now waging all-out war in South Waziristan. Since last Saturday, 28,000 Pakistani troops, supported by F-16 fighter aircraft and helicopter gunships, have mounted a three-pronged offensive in the Pashtun-speaking tribal agency.

“The White House must stop dithering while America’s armed forces are in danger.” — Dick Cheney, former vice president, saying that President Barack Obama has failed to set clear goals in Afghanistan You can’t ask for a better back seat driver than Dick Cheney. After all, he rode shotgun on one of the roughest trips in American presidential history. For eight years, Cheney gave wheelman George W. Bush directions. I guess old habits are hard to break. The thing is, Dick, you’re not in the car anymore.
