Fox News: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday that Senate Democrats will include in the health care reform bill a government-backed health insurance program that allows states to opt out if they can come up with an alternative. “I think it’s the fairest way to go,” Reid said of the “opt out” proposal. The compromise measure was one of a host of different so-called public options being considered in the Senate.

And so Harry Reid is going to bring us the opt-out version of the public option . Personally I am fine with this position. Here is what I wrote to some friends about this issue: The question isn’t whether it’s right to allow the red states to refuse health care (for themselves). The question is whether it’s better or worse to allow the red states to deny health care to everyone. If an opt-out is all they can pass, then pass it. We can move the ball further another time. And the politics of it are beautiful.

Call it the optional option: Washington (CNN) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Monday that he intends to move forward with a health care bill including a public insurance option allowing states to opt out. Reid, a Nevada Democrat, has been melding legislation from the more conservative Senate Finance Committee and the more liberal Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. The Health Committee included a form of the public option in its bill; the Finance Committee did not.

In a press conference at 3:15 pm today on Capitol Hill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that the Senate will include an “opt-out” public option in its version of the health care reform bill. States would have the ability to “opt-out” of participating in this plan, as opposed to opting into the plan. Shortly after the press conference ended, Senator Baucus (D-MT), who shephereded the Senate Finance Bill through months of committee debate but who had earlier expressed opposition to a public option released a statement in support of it.

Goldfarb is concerned that health care overhaul will hurt the Medicare health program for the elderly. “They’re not telling the seniors the truth and you’ve got to read in between the lines.

One of the most controversial elements of health care overhaul is the so-called public option, under which the government would offer health insurance. It’s loved by many congressional Democrats – and loathed by Republicans and some conservative Democrats. Appearing today in Sunrise, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled a new label for the “public option.” She called it the “consumer option.” She said it wasn’t part of a planned rebranding effort.

By CALVIN WOODWARD WASHINGTON (AP) – In the health care debate, Democrats and their allies have gone after insurance companies as rapacious profiteers making “immoral” and “obscene” returns while “the bodies pile up.” But in pillorying insurers over profits, the critics are on shaky ground. Ledgers tell a different reality. Health insurance profit margins typically run about 6 percent, give or take a point or two. That’s anemic compared with other forms of insurance and a broad array of industries, even some beleaguered ones.

All focus has shifted in the health care debate from whether there will be reform at all to whether the final version will contain a strong, robust, affordable public option. This is a good debate to have. I’ve weighed in with opinions on why I believe the public option is essential to any reform package, and why I believe the current buzz about allowing states to opt out of a public option is a bad idea. But the public option should not be the sole focus of the discussion in the weeks going forward.
