One friend writes that this is the best outcome of the World Series. Pretty much. The enemies of all that is decent have aligned to get rid of the two teams from Los Angeles, and since we all know that Los Angeles is, uhhhh, the home of good stuff (I guess), our only choice is to at least root against the evil Yankees if nothing else. On the LBS (The Libertarian Baseball Scale ), with the Dodgers being about 100 (that’s good), and the Yankees being about negative 30,000, I’m not really sure where the Phillies stand.

The Champs vs. The Yanks You want star power? East coast bias? Classic franchises? Intriguing match-ups? Crazy fan-bases? This World Series has got about anything you could want as a fan – unless of course you are a Mets fan. As I said before the NLDS: Until the Phillies lose, I will not be changing the format of my previews. So, in the same format as last year’s preview , here’s my 2009 World Series rundown. The Aces Cliff Lee / Cole Hamels vs. CC Sabathia / A.J.

Let me just get this out of the way first. Hiring Manny Acta is not a sexy, “get the fans excited,” kind of move. I am guessing that there will be no uptick of ticket sales in the Cleveland Indians’ offices today. So, then what should we all think of the Indians’ latest hire? Much like Terry Pluto said, I have no idea.In all fairness to Acta and his record with the Nationals, I don’t think Joe Torre deserves all the credit he gets for the 90’s New York Yankees either. Acta had horrible results

The New York Yankees will face the defending World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies in baseball’s Fall Classic, and ticket brokers may be in for a healthy payday. While some diehard baseball fans might have preferred the Los Angeles Dodgers as the Yankees opponent for nostalgic reasons, the Philadelphia/New York match-up pits two rival East Coast cities against each other with fans more than willing to drive the couple of hours between the two ballparks.

Baseball fans may be bracing for a bang-up World Series between the Yankees and the Phillies, but in the political world could there be anything more boring than sports wagering among fellow Democrats? In perhaps the most un-original sports bet ever, New York’s senators, Charles E. Schumer and Kristen Gillibrand, and Pennsylvania’s senators, Arlen Specter and Bob Casey are putting up Brooklyn cheesecakes against Philly cheese-steaks. May the most runs (not to mention trans-fats and calories) win.

Last night the New York Yankees–as predicted–made it to the World Series and predictably many Americans booed. They used to boo the Yankees because they were from New York and people like to boo New York. Then they booed because the Yankees had the most obnoxious owner in sports, but George Steinbrenner has exited the stage and that honor now goes to the Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones. No, now they boo the Yankees because in the midst of this economic crisis they are Wall Street’s team, the best team that money can buy.

“They say that baseball breaks your heart, but what they don’t tell you is that it gives you heart attacks.”– Confessions of a She-Fan This morning I’m breathing with great relief. My stomach is calm, and my nerves have stopped jangling—and all because the New York Yankees won against the Angels last night, ending an extremely tense playoff series. They’re going to the World Series for the first time since 2003, attempting to wrest the championship title away from the Philadelphia Phillies .

Have you ever been lounging about your living room, wearing less-than-pants and flipping disinterestedly through the channels on a lazy evening, when all the sudden you inexplicably stopped on, say, a Division II collegiate badminton tournament? You have little or no attachment to or background knowledge of either team; neither squad stands out from the other; they are closely seeded. Minutes in, you’ve probably abandoned this boring badminton tournament in favor of the final 20 minutes of a Law & Order: SVU you’ve already seen twice.

The New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday evening at Yankee Stadium 5-2 and won the best-of-seven American League Championship Series 4-2. With the victory the Bronx Bombers will return to the World Series after a six-year drought. It is their 40th trip to the fall classic and they hope to win for the 27th time in team history. They will be opposed by defending champion Philadelphia Phillies, which won the National League pennant in five games against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

You might have a hunch that your apartment will be all kinds of drafty this winter, but you’re not in a position to start replacing insulation. A valuable Ask MetaFilter thread offers many temporary heat fixes and DIY draft fixes. Photo by Muffet . The question comes from a couple in Nova Scotia who spent a winter packed in outdoor clothes in a ground floor apartment, yet still felt the chill. They’ve pulled off the basics that a tenant can get away with—plastic window covers, caulking, draft dodgers, and the like—but needed a few more ideas.

(NOTE: this article is by MetsToday contributing writer and resident stathead Matt Himelfarb — be kind, and keep an open mind) Rumors of the Dodgers recent financial troubles due to the McCourts’ nasty split should be welcome news to the Mets. The only other potential Roy Halladay suitors that could fairly compensate baseball’s best pitcher appear to be the Jay’s inter-division rivals, the Yankees and the Red Sox. Both Boston and New York do not have unlimited payrolls, and figure to set their sights, both financially and in regard to prospects, on other priorities.

Baseball experienced a welcome change in 2008. From 2002 through 2007, the World Series featured at least one Wild Card team. Some of those teams — notably the 2002 Angels (99-63) and the 2004 Red Sox (98-64) — could make a case for being there. But in other years it was an inferior team getting hot at the right time and knocking off better teams. That’s the idea sometimes, but to have a Wild Card team in the World Series for six straight seasons? That’s a bit much, at least to me.

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies are officially going head-to-head in this year’s World Series, causing folks from all walks of life to root for one baseball team or the other—in fact, even the heroes of the Marvel Universe are taking sides. Earlier in the season, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Joe Quesada spoke with MLB.com about the various baseball franchises competing for a shot at the World Series title, which has now been whittled down to the Yankees and the Phillies.

Via Wallace Matthews – The Yankees have spent $1,187,333,651 on ballplayers since 2003, the last time they made it to the World Series. That’s one billion, one hundred eighty-seven million, three hundred thirty-three thousand and six hundred fifty-one dollars, if you’re scoring at home. The number jumps to $1,425,549,383 – almost enough to pay a Goldman Sachs CEO his bonus – if you go back to 2000, the last time they actually won a world championship.

Jimmy Rollins has once again gotten his Nostradamus on. After gaining something of a reputation for making predictions, J-Roll quickly became a media target for an easy story-line sound bite (even more so than he had been), with reporters asking for his calls on a variety of outcomes. How many wins would the Phillies have? Will they repeat as champs? Do you like the Eagles with the points tonight? He nailed most of them, and after last night’s Yankees win, another J-Roll prognostication came true. In May, it was released that Playboy had previously asked Jimmy which teams he thought would be in the World Series.

Back at the end of April, I compared then soon-to-be free agent outfielders Jason Bay and Matt Holliday. I concluded that Holliday was the better player out of the pair, writing: “Holliday is the better all-around player. He is a year younger, and much better on the bases and in the field. Bay has been the more productive hitter, but he is defensively challenged and not quite as valuable overall. Whether Holliday can perform in Oakland, though, will dramatically affect his and Boras’ bank account.

Last night, the Yankess closed out the Angels, advancing to the World Series and, we imagine, making journalist Matt Taibbi that much unhappier about publishing this prediction for the 2009 season back in April: [A]t the first sign of … trouble — the first six-game losing streak in May, the first whispers of a Joe Girardi firing in June — [the high-priced Yankee free agents] will all scatter like rats to the far corners of the Yankee clubhouse and start making cell-phone calls to their agents and whispering to the press.

Rooting for the bad guy always sounds so good in theory; there is a sexy excitement to the whole thing, a contrarian pride, and a Clint Eastwood danger. But in practice, it never works. At the movies, you find yourself unable to shake the momentum of the action, somehow hinged to the values of the hero, reasonably off put by the villainous secrecy, shady Russian accents, and grandiose threats of the bad guys. Somehow, you always come home to the good guy. But this is baseball. And the lines aren’t so clear.

Last Saturday I officiated at the memorial service for my father-in-law, Bill Swedberg. He died a couple of weeks ago at the age of 84, a victim of Parkinson’s Syndrome. The service was held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California, where Bill’s wife is buried (and also my father and my maternal grandparents). Bill was able to die at home, thanks to the commitment of his children, most of all his daughter, Debbie, who cared for him for years and oversaw and contribute to his professional care in the last, difficult months.

Two bits of news out of St. Louis on Sunday; one a big surprise and the other not so much. According to a report from ESPN, Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa signed a one year deal to remain the manager for 2010 with a mutual option for 2011. This bit of news is not a big shock since it was easy to think LaRussa wouldn’t want to leave the Cardinals a bitter taste, as is from their sweep at the hands of the Dodgers earlier this postseason.
