Iranian ships loaded with weapons keep turning up in the darnedest places. The latest report is that Yemeni authorities on Monday seized an Iranian ship in their waters trying to deliver anti-armor rounds to Yemen’s Shia Zaidi rebels. Especially noteworthy is that the ship was seized on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. Yemenis say the ship is not the first to pull into the Eritrean port of Asmara and then cross the Red Sea to deliver weapons to the Zaidi insurgents.

JTA October 27, 2009 Iran will continue to progress in its nuclear program as long as Israel continues to have nuclear weapons, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said. A d v e r t i s e m e n t The Iranian president made the remarks Tuesday during a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the semi-official state news agency ISNR reported. “When an illegal regime possesses nuclear weapons, the other countries’ rights for peaceful nuclear energy cannot be denied,” ISNR quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

The West continues to wait for Tehran’s response to the  proposed nuclear deal , with Iran promising a response within the next two days. Iran has stated it will seek some “very important changes” to the proposal. Congress, however, is tired of waiting. Michael Crowley of The New Republic reports Representative Howard Berman (D-Cali.) and Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) will call for a debate on  Iranian gasoline sanctions  in their respective committees this week.  Furthermore, the House will consider a concurrent resolution ( S Con Res 45 ) that will encourage the Iranian government to release the three detained American hikers.

A deadline has passed, but Iran says it won’t have an answer on a proposed nuclear deal for a couple of days. Meanwhile, reports from Tehran show a confusing array of positions, from indignant rejection of the deal to suggestions of compromise.

Jennifer flagged the Washington Post report about the Iranian leaders’ indecision on the nuclear deal. One would only wish there were a fight inside the regime, with sensible people wanting the deal and radicals opposing it. In fact, this is the customary passion play of the Islamic Republic of Iran. One emissary appears reasonable, another gives a fiery speech, a third tries to mediate, a fourth criticizes the others, a fifth calls on the Supreme Leader to intervene, a sixth asks for time, and a seven ends up blaming the West for discord.
