Obama is about to sign a bill into law that will pay off the Taliban if they lay down their guns. WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The defense bill that President Barack Obama will sign into law on Wednesday contains a new provision that would pay Taliban fighters who renounce the insurgency, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin said on Tuesday. The provision establishes a program in Afghanistan similar to one in Iraq in which former fighters were reintegrated into Iraqi society, Levin told Reuters.

Tribal legends claim that in the foothills of the Afghan mountains, Cain (Qabil), an arable farmer, committed the first murder by killing his brother Abel (Habil), the shepherd. Cain and Abel have long been understood as the first and second sons of Adam and Eve in the religions of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Their story is told in the Bible and Torah at Genesis 4:1-16 and the Qur’an at 5:26-32. Although their story is cited in the Quran, neither of them is mentioned by name.

America has just suffered the deadliest day of the war in Afghanistan in more than four years, but Obama doesn’t have time to worry about that. He’s focused on another war: the war against his political enemies. The assault on Rush Limbaugh was just for starters. Today’s victim: Fox News. Is the media finally starting to hold Obama somewhat accountable? It’s not enough that four-fifths of the news networks march in lock step to the Obama administration and have turned from being the watchdogs to Obama lapdogs.

by JasonHistorically, presidents have been classified in four categories and they are: paradigm setters, successors, minority  party presidents, and restorers. We have numerous examples in which to pull from that gives those categories faces. Think of FDR and Reagan when it comes to paradigm setters; Grant as successor to Lincoln, Taft as successor to TR; Nixon and Clinton as minority presidents; Carter and W. Bush as restorers to their respective ideological political paradigms.

The Daily Loaf: The new threat to party politics As President Obama’s approval rating continues to slip, it is clear that he will face a much tougher race for re-election in 2012 than he ran last year. It’s like an overdue pregnancy; it’s been nine months, but he has yet to deliver. The markets are still fragile, and the dollar is going down while unemployment numbers are going up. Toss in our sky-rocketing debt and indecisive action in Afghanistan, and it starts to look like Obama isn’t the savior he was made out to be.

In March, Afghanistan will become America’s longest war, surpassing the Vietnam War.

Christopher Preble does the math: Yesterday Congress passed the $680 billion FY 2010Defense Authorization Bill , which authorizes the largest such budget since the end of World War II. If, as is all but certain, President Obama signs the legislation, he will have failed to halt the inexorable growth in military spending, and he will signal to American taxpayers that they should expect more of the same. What’s worse, most of this money is not geared to defending America.

For their second event this semester, the Political Union and Review at New York University wrangled over the resolution: A US troop surge in Afghanistan is the best action to ensure US security . It was a lopsided debate at best. When it came to a show of hands, the surge lost 10 – 4 despite one “ironic” vote and one vote from a guy who arrived five minutes from the end. Views on Afghanistan were articulated by Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, and a man simply representing the Left.

It’s been eight years, dammit: We invaded Afghanistan to ensure that the country could never again be used to launch attacks against the United States. That mission is accomplished, and our only goal should be making sure it stays accomplished — whether the place is run by Hamid Karzai or the Taliban. The counterinsurgency campaign that Obama is contemplating looks like a step onto the slipperiest slope imaginable. It doesn’t matter whether the step is tentative or bold.

Election fiascos and strategy deliberations continue, while Pakistan’s army is laying waste to South Waziristan. The deliberations are of the utmost importance; more important and more pressing than health care reform. This is Obama’s second strategy review in nine months. He cannot, politically or strategically, continue on such a pace. That means that the decisions made can be expected to indicate overall policy for the rest of his term, if not longer in the way that policy develops a momentum of its own.
