10/29/2009The Enemy Within and WithoutDavid L LamonO you who dwell by many waters, (that’s us we have military personnel in 180 countries, trade and consular offices worldwide) and abundant in treasures (for many years we have been the economic power of the world to the point the U.S. dollar was the most sought after currency but not now) your end has come, the measure of your covetousness. The Lord of hosts has sworn by Himself. Jeremiah 51:14 surely I will fill you with men as with locust and they shall lift up a battle cry against you.

Eyes housing, jobless aid By Patrice Hill WashingtonTimes.com Fear that the economy might fall back into recession is compelling Congress to extend unemployment benefits and incentives for homebuying that lawmakers hope will help sustain growth. The threat of a relapse in housing has prompted Senate leaders to start negotiating an extension of the first-time homebuyers’ tax credit, now set to expire Nov. 30. They hope to attach the measure to legislation extending soon-to-expire unemployment benefits and then pass both by the end of the week.
Dinallo: Not Running Against Wall St.dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com

Eric R. Dinallo was once one of Eliot Spitzer’s right-hand men.He is credited with dusting off the Martin Act, the sweeping New York state securities law, and devising a way for Mr. Spitzer to use it to prosecute Wall Street corruption and make a national name as state attorney general, The New York Times’s Danny Hakim writes. And it was Mr. Dinallo, as the head of the investor protection bureau in the attorney general’s office, who oversaw the case against Henry Blodget and other securities analysts who hyped stocks to curry favor with their firms’ investment banking clients. So one might expect now that he is running for attorney general himself, Mr.

WASHINGTON — As President Obama turns 48 today, a few celebrations are on tap inside the White House, including a quiet breakfast with his family, lunch with Democratic senators in the State Dining Room, and dinner with his wife and a few friends. The noisier commotion over his birthday is taking place outside the White House. As most of the political conversation in Washington and across the nation has been devoted to health care, the economy and even the president’s first nomination to the Supreme Court, a small set of detractors have been obsessively fixated by this date in history: Aug.

It’s funny how Harry Reid sets out to do something and ends up doing the opposite as you’ll all remember that not so long ago Reid led a little attack on Rush Limbaugh with a letter sent to Limbaugh’s bosses of sorts to have him fired, which the brilliant Limbaugh used against Reid and his other tormentors and generated a record at the time amount for anything auctioned on EBay which was in the millions.

From The Greenville News : While the suddenly cash-strapped cash-for-clunkers program has been a big hit with car dealers and car buyers, it’s not popular with U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint. “I just think this is a great example of the stupidity that’s coming out of Washington right now,” DeMint said on “Fox News Sunday.” Original DVD cover The money approved for the program to trade in old cars for more fuel-efficient new ones is about used up. On July 17 the Consumer Product Safety Commission refused to exempt or stay the coverage of crystals, rhinestones and glass beads under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. Although lead has long been an ingredient in the manufacture of all true crystals, most rhinestones and many glass beads, there seems to be a dearth of actual real-life instances of children contracting lead poisoning from licking, chewing or swallowing these baubles, apparently because the lead in question, unlike lead in metallic form or in paint pigments, is bound to other substances and not “biologically available”.

by Edmunds.com Green Car Advisor on August 3, 2009 U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the cash-for-clunkers program that’s become the most visible of the Obama administration’s economic-stimulus efforts would come to an end possibly as early as this week unless the U.S. Senate approves $2 billion in additional funding for the program. “If we don’t get the $2 billion from the Senate … we would have to suspend the program next week,” LaHood said in an interview with C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” show on Sunday.

This will more likely lead to war than anything else proposed so far. I’m not coming down on one side or the other, but this particular sanction will definitely cause war with Iran IMO. It is the only sanction Iran will not be able to withstand and desperation will cause immediate reactions. Quote: U.S. Weighs Iran Sanctions if Talks Are Rejected By DAVID E.

Pretty good article following from MSN (surprising that “good” and “MSN” go together) about Wal-Mart. One note, MSN needs to learn about sharing articles. Link to blog/facebook would really increase their viral presence.   The price of Wal-Mart coming to town When the retail giant moves in, it promises cheaper goods, more jobs and more tax revenue. And in the short term, it delivers. But the initial boost hides later losses. By Karen Aho MSN Money Wal-Mart sure sounds like a good idea when it first rolls into town.

Words from the (investment) wise for the week that was (July 27 – August 2, 2009) For some reason the lyrics of Electric Light Orchestra’s classic, Livin’ Thing , keep resounding in my head: “You took me, ooh, woah, higher and higher, baby. It’s a livin’ thing … ” Followed by: “It’s a terrible thing to lose … ” But let me get on to the review of the financial markets … Investors (or should I say “Johnny-come-latelies”?) last week again favored the reflation trade on the back of better-than-expected US earnings announcements and economic data, indicating that the trough of the recession might be behind us, or at least be stabilizing at depressed levels.

After looking at the Alt-A and option ARM disaster, many readers have been asking what in the world created the toxic ecology for these mortgages to spawn.  You really have to go back to 1982 when the Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act of 1982 was passed.  This bill was sponsored by Congressman Fernand St. Germain, […] After looking at the Alt-A and option ARM disaster , many readers have been asking what in the world created the toxic ecology for these mortgages to spawn.  You really have to go back to 1982 when the Garn-St.

Michelle Malkin Friday, July 31, 2009 Everything you need to know about false Hope and Change can be found in one picture: the image of President Obama embracing embattled Sen. Chris Dodd. The troubled Democrat is in deep over his sweetheart Countrywide home-loan deals, corporate bailout cash and crony associations. New revelations by Countrywide whistleblower Robert Feinberg confirm what more and more of Dodd’s constituents in Connecticut are coming to realize: He’s a lying weasel.

WASHINGTON – The success of President Barack Obama’s ambitious agenda — from health care and climate change to education — could depend on how quickly he recovers from the sharp drop in support among white voters after criticizing a white policeman’s arrest of a black Harvard scholar. Obama’s widely publicized effort to defuse the first racial flare-up of his young presidency by inviting the protagonists to the White House last week for beers and conversation ended well by most accounts, even though there were no apologies.

The remarkable speech delivered by California’s Honorable Governor Schwarzenegger has turned the afternoon at the Georgetown University into an inspiring event. Here is the print version of the keynote address of Gov. Schwarzenegger (with the introduction part cut): GOVERNOR: Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you, John, for the wonderful introduction, I appreciate it very much. And it is great to be here today at Georgetown University, also known in my house as the alma mater, because of course my wife went to school here, and she graduated here at Georgetown.
